Pieces of Eight

Try to gather enough Chest Cards to complete the Pieces of Eight without going over. Engage in skulduggery against other players by trying to steal or sabotage their loot. When the plunder is over, the closest to 8 coins wins!

Setup

  1. Separate the cards into the Chest Deck (gold) and Event Deck (blue).
  2. Shuffle the Event Deck and deal each player one event card. Then place the Event Deck in the center of the table.
  3. Remove all Cursed Chests from the Chest Deck, then insert them based on the number of players:

  1. Shuffle the Chest Deck and deal one chest card to each player. Lay out the ten remaining chest cards facedown in a 2-by-5 grid.
  2. Players should keep their event cards in hand and their chest cards facedown in front of them. Keep all of your cards hidden from the other players.

Gameplay

Turn order begins with the person who won the last game. If this is the first game, whoever says "I'm a pirate!" goes first. They receive the gold coin to mark them as the first player. Play will continue clockwise around the table.

On your turn, draw an event card from the Event Deck. Then choose one of your two event cards to play. Perform the action on your card,* and then discard it. The game ends when a player cannot draw another card from the Event Deck.

* Cards that instruct all players to perform an action should be completed in turn order.

Throughout the game, chest cards will be traded, swapped, revealed, and moved around the table. If you ever have no chest cards, draw one from the center. Players cannot draw the same card(s) they returned to the center that turn.

Cursed Chests

The Cursed Chest card reads: "Cursed! If you have this card at the end of the game, you cannot win."

Winning the Game

Once the Event Deck is empty, the game ends, and all players reveal their chest cards. The player closest to 8 coins wins the game! Make sure to give that player the gold coin if you're playing another round.

However, if your total is over 8, or you're holding a Cursed Chest at the end of the game, you cannot win.

Ties

Ties are broken as follows:

  1. Player with the least number of chests wins.
  2. Player with the highest value chest wins.
  3. Players draw a chest from the center, and the highest value wins. Repeat this step until someone wins.
