Setup
Set up the game as usual, but return the player marker on your newspaper track to the box. The newspaper track and the explanation of the exchange rates beside it (that is, everything marked with the letter E on page 7 of the base rulebook) are not used with this expansion. Shuffle all newspaper cards and place them as a face-down draw pile next to the location boards. Leave room next to it for a discard pile.
Anatomy of a Newspaper Card
The official rulebook labels the parts of a newspaper card as follows:
- General action not tied to a location board. No location number is shown for this action. (Upper half of the card.)
- Effect(s) of the card. (Shown on the upper action, here a megaphone icon with value -1 and a card icon with value -1.)
- Dividing line between the upper and lower action.
- Number of the location board on which you must have cubes to perform the action. (Shown here as the number 6.)
- Number of your required cubes at this location. (Shown as a cube, a slash and two cubes.)
- Various effects depending on the number of your cubes at this location. (Shown on the lower action as effects keyed to one cube or to two cubes at the location.)
New Rules for Newspapers
-
Whenever you receive a newspaper during the game, take the top card of the draw pile into your hand. The hand limit for newspaper cards is 6 cards: you may never hold more than 6 cards at any time. If you have exactly 6 newspaper cards in your hand, you must first discard or play a card before you may draw another.
-
You may discard a newspaper card at any time (including directly before you would draw a newspaper card or before you must pay any money cost) in order to receive 1 pound.
-
During Phase 2 of each round, you may play any number of your newspaper cards directly before and/or after you place a cube.
-
Each newspaper card has an upper action and a lower action. Whenever you play a newspaper card, you may perform either both of these actions or just one of them, as you choose. When you perform an action, you must apply all of its effects to yourself, both positive and negative. If you cannot pay a negative amount of money in full, you must take out a loan where necessary.
-
Whenever you discard or play a card, place it face up on the discard pile afterwards. If you are allowed to draw a card and the draw pile is empty, shuffle the discard pile and form a new draw pile from it.
The Actions of Newspaper Cards
Most actions show the number of a location board and 1 or 2 cubes. This means that you must have at least this number of your own cubes on that location in order to perform the action.
Some actions show this symbol: [one cube] / [two cubes]. This means that you can perform the action with 1 of your own cubes on that location, but with 2 (or more) of your own cubes on the location you receive a better effect. Apart from this symbol, you generally gain no advantage from having more than the required number of cubes on a location (there are, however, some card effects that reward this).
Some actions show neither the number of a location board nor a number of cubes. You may perform these general actions regardless of how many cubes you have already placed and where you placed them. This does not change the fact that you may perform these actions only during Phase 2, or forgo the action entirely.
Appendix
The official rulebook states that most symbols should already be familiar and are explained in the base game. The following symbols are new:
-
Crowd-and-cube icon (a group of figures above a cube): Count every cube on this location, not just your own.
-
Set icon (prototype card, person card and share): A set of one prototype card, one person card and one share. No link between them is necessary.
-
Buzz track icon (megaphone with -3): Move your player marker on the buzz track backwards by the indicated number of spaces, here 3. If you move over or onto a flyer or poster space, nothing happens. If you then move forward again over or onto a flyer space, you receive the bonus again. However, you may never place a second buzz marker on a poster space on which you already have a buzz marker.
-
Cube = icon (one cube, followed by an equals sign): For each of your own cubes on this location, you receive the reward shown on the right.
-
Crowd-and-dice icon (a group of figures above cubes showing pips): Count every cube with a particular pip value, here 5 and 6, on this location.
-
Loan icon (two loan cards with an arrow): Repay a loan without having to give up money.
-
Buzz track position icon (1., 2., 3.): Depending on your relative position on the buzz track (first, second or third, including when places are shared), you receive the corresponding reward shown on the right.
