Introduction
You are on a mission to take back the Treasure from the Greedy Dragon. Avoid the Dragons who are trying to burn you into Crispy Critters!
In Crispy Critters, players take turns until the Deck is empty. Then the Greedy Dragon wakes up and attacks! After this, the player with the most Treasure wins!
Contents
100 cards:
- 78 Critter cards: 13 each of Armourdillos, Barbearians, Bardgers, Chipmonks, Pandadins and Sorcerhares.
- 12 Dragon cards: 2 of each type.
- 6 Cave cards.
- 4 Reference cards.
Setup
- Remove all the cards from the box and set up the box to form the Greedy Dragon's mouth!
- Shuffle all the Critter cards and Dragon cards together and put them in the centre of the table. This is the Deck.
- Give each player a Cave card face down (with the Greedy Dragon sleeping).
- Give each player a Reference card. Make sure one player has the card with the burnt edges. Return any unused Reference and Cave cards to the box.
- Each player draws a card from the Deck and places it face up at their Cave Entrance. This is the first Critter in their Party!
- Each player draws three more Critter cards from the Deck and keeps them in their Hand (don't show the other players!).
If you drew any Dragon cards in step 5 or 6, set them aside for now and keep drawing until you have one Critter card in your Party and three Critter cards in your Hand. Then shuffle the set aside Dragon cards back into the Deck.
After setup, your play area should look like this: your Party of Critters is a row of Critter stacks leading away from your Cave Entrance; your Cave card sits next to the Cave Entrance; there is space next to your Cave card for your Treasure; and your Hand is held separately.
How to Play
Players take turns until the Deck is empty. The first player is the player who has the Reference card with the burnt edges.
On your turn, do these three things in order:
- Play Critter cards Play Critter cards into your Party and do their Action (if you can).
- Gain Treasure If you have three or more types of Critter in your Party, Gain Treasure.
- Fill your Hand Draw cards from the Deck until you have three in your Hand again.
Once you have finished your turn, the player to your left takes their turn. Players keep taking turns this way until the Deck is empty.
1. Play Critter cards
Choose a Critter card from your Hand. Play any number of Critters of that type into your Party at your Cave Entrance.
If you choose the same type of Critter as a Critter you already have in your Party, stack the Critter(s) on top of that Critter.
OR
If you choose a different type of Critter as a Critter(s) you already have in your Party, or if your Party is empty, place the Critter(s) to the left of your Party.
NOTE: You will never have more than one stack for each type of Critter.
Then, do the Action on the Critter card you played. You only do one Action, no matter how many Critter cards you played.
If a player loses a card due to your Action, they do not draw any more cards until the end of their next turn.
2. Gain Treasure
If you have fewer than three Critter types in your Party, skip this step and continue to 3. Fill your Hand.
OR
If you have three or more Critter types in your Party: Gain Treasure! Flip over ALL Critters of the same type that are closest to the Cave Entrance. Place them face down to the right of your Cave card to show how much Treasure you gained.
Only flip the stack of Critters closest to your Cave Entrance, and only do this once per turn, even if you have more than three types of Critters in your Party.
Slide the other Critters in your Party closer to the Cave Entrance.
Remember, the player with the most Treasure at the end of the game wins!
3. Fill your Hand
Draw cards from the Deck until you have three in your Hand. This is the ONLY time you draw cards into your Hand.
IF YOU DRAW A DRAGON, stop drawing cards for now. There is a Dragon Attack. Once the Dragon Attack has finished, keep drawing cards from the Deck until you have three Critter cards in your Hand. If another Dragon appears, there is another Dragon Attack! Keep repeating this step until you have three Critter cards in your Hand. Then finish your turn.
Critters & Their Actions
Armourdillo
Armourdillos are great at recruiting others to your party.
Action: Up to three times: Reveal a card from the Deck and...
- ...if it's a Critter, you're safe for now. Either choose to stop, and add the Critter(s) you revealed to your Party, or reveal again if you haven't already revealed three cards. This could be a risk though, because...
- ...if it's a Dragon, all the Critters you revealed are eaten! Put them into the Greedy Dragon's Mouth (the box). Then, the Dragon you revealed attacks! Resolve the Dragon Attack before continuing to 2. Gain Treasure.
Barbearian and Pandadin
Barbearians and Pandadins love to raid together!
Action: When you play a Barbearian or a Pandadin, you can also play the other Critter type on the same turn. They go into different Critter stacks as usual.
Bardger
The sweet song of the Bardger can lure others into your Party, but only if they play the right tune.
Action: Name a Critter (Armourdillo, Barbearian, Bardger, Chipmonk, Pandadin, or Sorcerhare). If any other player has the Critter you named in their Hand, they must give one of them to you, unless it is the last Critter card in their Hand. You add any Critters you gained this way to your Party.
Chipmonk
A Chipmonk's energy makes other Critters join your Party!
Action: Choose another player who has more than one Critter in their Hand, and take one Critter (at random) from their Hand. Add the Critter to your Party.
Sorcerhare
Sorcerhares are masters of hypnosis. Critters in other Parties are always falling for their spells!
Action: Choose another player and take one Critter of your choice from their Party. Add the Critter to your Party.
Dragon Attack
A Dragon attacks as soon as it is revealed from the Deck. Each Dragon shows a series of Critters.
If there are no Critters in ANY player's Party, the Dragon wanders off. Put it into the Greedy Dragon's Mouth (the box) and skip the Dragon Attack.
Otherwise, the Dragon will try to eat ALL Critters of ONE type from ALL Parties.
Each player checks their Party for the leftmost Critter type shown on the Dragon card. If any player has that Critter type in their Party, ALL of those Critters in ALL Parties are eaten by the Dragon. Put them into the Greedy Dragon's Mouth (the box).
If no player has that Critter type, check the next leftmost Critter type and repeat for all Critter types shown, or until one Critter type has been eaten.
Once all the Critter types shown have been checked, or a Critter type has been eaten, the Dragon Attack is finished and the Dragon goes into the Greedy Dragon's Mouth.
Example: This Dragon eats Bardgers, but they are not in anyone's Party, so it targets Armourdillos. You have Armourdillos in your Party so ALL Armourdillos are eaten! Now the Dragon goes away!
Game End
As soon as the last card is drawn from the Deck, the game ends immediately. If it is a Dragon card, resolve the Dragon Attack as normal. Then, carry out the following steps:
- Players move ALL the Critter cards from their Hand to their Party, without doing their Actions.
- The player who emptied the Deck flips their Cave card to reveal the Greedy Dragon, which attacks ALL players.
- Resolve the Greedy Dragon's attack like any other Dragon Attack, but continue until THREE types of Critter are eaten, or until none remain.
- Remaining Critters escape. Flip them face down beside your Cave as Treasure gained.
Count your Treasure - the player with the most wins! If tied, the tied player last in turn order wins.
