Playing with the Pink Pirate

Use this module with 3–5 players.

[When playing with 5 players, use the supplementary treasure types. See "Playing with 5 players" (p. 16).]

When playing with the Pink Pirate, follow these setup steps:

  1. One player is the Pink Pirate. Set up the pirate ship as shown in the illustration. The Octo-Canon must be adjacent to the pirate ship.
  2. During setup, place the "ship + anchor" pairs (and the Pirate + Octo-Canon pair) so that they surround the tentacles, keeping equal distances between them. The rest of setup is identical to the base rules, with the addition of the Nameless Island.
  3. The non-pirate players decide the turn order and choose their ships according to the base rules. The Pirate player always takes the last position in the turn order.

The Pirate's victory conditions are similar to the other players': collect 5 types of treasure. The actions available to the Pirate are different.

What the Pink Pirate Can Do During Its Turn

Before the flick, move the Octo-Canon

The only action the Pirate can take during its turn is the flick of the Octo-Canon. The Pirate may move the Octo-Canon to any location before flicking it, as long as it stays in contact with the pirate ship.

After it has flicked the Octo-Canon, the Pirate must move the pirate ship so that it is again in contact with the Octo-Canon. (While it is in contact with the Octo-Canon, the pirate ship may be placed anywhere, at any angle.)

Touching the octopus's head with the Octo-Canon

If the Pirate manages to touch the octopus's head with the Octo-Canon, it must move the ship and then make one octopus attack by itself, following the usual rules and without the other players.

Note! Stealing treasure

When the Pirate's octopus attack succeeds, the Pirate may steal all the overturned treasures and load them onto its pirate ship. (If a type of overturned treasure is already loaded on the pirate ship, the Pirate cannot steal that treasure. It must be left in the ocean.)

In addition to the octopus attack it makes on its own turn, the Pirate also takes part in the "normal" octopus attack triggered by the Octo-Chrono.

In both cases, the Pirate may steal a ship's treasures when an attack succeeds.

Attention! Do not advance the Octo-Chrono when the Pirate steals a treasure

Do not advance the Octo-Chrono, even if the Pirate manages to steal a treasure (or when the Pirate collects a treasure from the island). The Octo-Chrono only advances when a ship other than the pirate's collects a treasure.

Other Rules for the Pink Pirate

(Printed p. 16.)

The Pirate can also be attacked!

The Pirate may also be attacked by the octopus during an attack by the octopus. The Pirate who was attacked, and who sees its treasures overturned, loses them in the same way as the other players and must continue with what it has left.

The Pirate can collect treasures on the island

Like any other player, the Pirate may collect a treasure on the island if it is able to touch it with the Octo-Canon. However, if the Octo-Canon is closer to the island than the other anchors, it cannot collect the treasure (instead, it may move the pirate ship). There is no change to the rules of the Nameless Island (p. 12).

Note: when you measure the distance between the Octo-Canon and the island, always do so at the start of the turn, before moving the Octo-Canon.

Playing with 5 players

In a 5-player game (including the Pink Pirate), add the extra treasure types. Remove the gem and add the rose and the wine bottle, which makes 6 types of treasure (24 pieces in total). The value hierarchy is shown on the right, from highest to lowest:

Captain > Goblet > Gold > Chest > Bottle > Rose

Other rules for the "Pink Pirate"

  • If, after being flicked, the Octo-Canon touches a ship (including the Pirate's own) and overturns its treasure, that treasure must be placed back on that ship by the player who owns it.
  • If, after being flicked, the Octo-Canon touches the octopus's head and the Nameless Island, the Pirate may both make an octopus attack and collect a treasure on the island. The reverse is also true (in which case the Pirate collects the island's treasure first, then makes the octopus attack).
  • If, after being flicked, the Octo-Canon leaves the ocean, the pirate's navigation has failed. Leave the ship where it is, put the Octo-Canon back in its original position, and end your turn. Even if the Octo-Canon touched the octopus's head before leaving the ocean, the turn ends with no octopus attack.
  • If, after being flicked, the Octo-Canon lands on the Nameless Island, collect the treasure on the island but leave the Octo-Canon where it is, and move the pirate ship so that it is adjacent to the island. On its next turn, the Pirate must flick the Octo-Canon from the spot on the island where it is.

Playing with Little Octopus (Petite Pieuvre)

(Printed p. 17.)

Adding Little Octopus gives a more strategic version of the game and makes the octopus's attacks even more intimidating. We recommend this rule when playing with two players. You may also add the Nameless Island and the Pink Pirate.

During setup, place Little Octopus next to the octopus's head. Otherwise, the base rules remain unchanged.

Drop the Ink die during an octopus attack

You may drop the Ink die either on the head of the giant octopus or on the head of Little Octopus.

Move the octopus's head!

You may move the giant octopus or Little Octopus, whichever head the Ink die was dropped on.

When playing with the Pink Pirate

If the Pirate touches the octopus's head with the Octo-Canon, it must make, by itself, one octopus attack (p. ?). The Pirate may aim either at the giant octopus or at Little Octopus with the cannon, but it may only drop the Ink die on the head that was touched.

If the Ink die shows Red, you may move any head.

Other rules for "Little Octopus"

  • When you replace a treasure that has come out of the ocean, or a treasure that has received an invalid flick from a player, you may drop it on the head of either octopus.
