Welcome to Cozy Oaks
Cozy Oaks is unique in that it uses a hand of cards, called Skills, in a very clever way. Each farmer has 10 Skills in their hand, and most Skills will cost time. The player must discard Skills from their hand in order to satisfy this cost, giving the player less decisions for future turns. As the seasons and years pass, players will be upgrading their Skills. And just like life, the more interest you have in a Skill, the more time it takes up in your day. Players will need to upgrade wisely. The only way to retrieve the played and discarded Skills is for the player to Sleep. This allows the player to regain all of their cards back. Each decision is crucial, from playing certain Skills and when to spend time on other things.

- Each player will take the three unique Structure cards (Basic House, Greenhouse Plot, and Windmill Plot) and places them in front of themselves. Also, leave space next to the House. This is where the player will place various mini cards they've collected throughout the game. This space is called the "Collection Area".
- Lastly, each player is given 4 Garbage Mini cards. These 4 cards must be 2 Light Garbage and 2 Heavy Garbage (Weeds, Rotten Crops, Coop Poop, and Barn Poop). Setup these cards as seen in the rulebook's illustration. Be sure to leave space to the left of the Weeds and Coop Poop cards for a new future Crop and or Animal.

Resource Explanation
Cozy Oaks comes with copper cubes, silver cubes, and gold cubes. These cubes represent the value and resource depending on which "Resource Box" the cubes are in. There are 5 types of resources: Produce, Goods, Materials, Gold, and Rubies (ruby gems included with the game).
Example: If a silver cube is placed into a "Materials Box" (on the player sheet), this represents that player having 3 Materials.
Cube values as printed: copper cube = 1, silver cube = 3, gold cube = 6.
Game Summary
Cozy Oaks is played over 3 Years with each year split into 4 Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter for a total of 12 rounds. Each player moves at their own pace. This means that one player may be on Year 2 Spring while the other player is still on Year 1 Fall. The goal in Cozy Oaks is to have the most Star Points at the end of the game. To achieve this, players must play Skill cards to work on their farms or visit locations in town. Players will need to manage their resources and time wisely.
Each player will begin the game with all ten Level 1 Skill cards in their hand. They will set their Level 2 and Level 3 decks aside for now. Each of the Level 2 and 3 decks can be looked through at any time.
The player that last visited a real farm is the starting player.
A Player's Turn
- The player MUST choose a Skill card from their hand to play.
- Be sure to pay for the Time Cost, if any (Time Cost pg.4).
- The chosen Skill card is placed face up on the table in front of the player.
- 3a) Cards that were discarded for paying the Time Cost are placed face down and sideways next to the played Skill card.
- 3b) Be sure to keep the "Played Skill" pile separate from the "Discarded Time" pile.
- 3c) Cards that have been played or discarded remain on the table until the player plays their Sleep Skill in which all cards will be returned to their hand.
- The player then performs the Skill card's effect.
- After the player has completed their Skill, it is then the other player's turn.
If the player plays their Sleep Skill, then that player will follow each step on the Sleep card. (Sleep Skill pg.14)
Skill Cards Breakdown
A Skill card shows: Skill Name, Time Cost, Skill Level, Skill Effect, and Boosted Effect (marked with a ruby).
Time Cost
Some Skill cards have a Time Cost. This means, that the player must discard that many skills from their hand. Discarded skills are placed face down and sideways on the table in front of them. The Sleep Skill can never be discarded. If the player cannot discard any skill cards (due to lack of cards in hand, or no cards in hand), then they cannot play that skill. If they have no skills they can play, then they are forced to play their Sleep Skill.
Skill Effect
Each Skill card has a main effect. When the Skill is played, the player will read then perform the Skill's effect. Some Skills will give options of different effects that the player can choose from. Some effects will have a "then/or" which means that the player can choose to do the first option THEN do the second option OR just do the second option.
Boosted Effect (Rubies)
Each Skill card can be BOOSTED. To gain a Skill's much more powerful effect, the player must play a Skill card, pay a time cost (if any), then spend 1 Ruby from their player sheet. The player will now instead read and perform the Boosted effect of the played Skill. This is a one time effect. A player must spend another Ruby on a future turn to activate this ability again.
Cook Skill
The Cook Skill allows the player to Cook Food. When cooking Food, the player must spend the appropriate resources on one of the two Food cards that are in the town. After cooking, draw a new Food card.
If the Level 1 Cook Skill is played, the player will simply collect the Food card and place this card in their "Collection Area". This will give them 1 Star Point at the end of the game.
If the Level 2 Cook Skill is played, then the player will activate the Food's LV2 effect, allowing the player to take a free action (as listed), as well as collecting this Food and placing it in their Collection Area for 1 Star Point at the end of the game.
If the Level 3 Cook Skill is played, the player does both the LV1 and LV2 as normal, but now they will also be able to return any one card that they had discarded when paying for Time Cost. This can include the card the player may have just discarded when playing this Cook Skill.
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Cook | 1 | Cook 1 Food as normal | You may pay 1 less Produce when cooking 1 food |
| Level 2 Cook | 1 | Cook 1 Food as normal | You may pay 1 less Produce or 1 Good when cooking 1 food |
| Level 3 Cook | 1 | Cook 1 Food as normal | You may cook 1 food for free having to spend no resources |
Craft Skill
The Craft Skill allows the player to use their accumulated resources to craft Items. To Craft, the player must spend Gold, Produce, Goods, and/or Materials. The crafted Item is then placed into that player's Collection Area. Then draw a new Item from the Item deck.
One thing to note, ALL Items need at least 1 Material to Craft.
Crafting Items is one of the best ways to gain Star Points. Players should manage their resources and time to Craft as many Items as they can. Some Items will give Star Points based on how many Cards or Resources the player has in their farm at the end of the game. For Example: If the player had the Scarecrow, they would gain 1 Star Point (max of 5 Star Points) for every 3 Produce they would have in their "PRODUCE BOX" at the end of the game.
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Craft | 2 | Craft 1 Item as normal | You may Craft up to 2 Items |
| Level 2 Craft | 2 | Can Craft up to 2 Items | You may Craft up to 3 Items |
| Level 3 Craft | 1 | Can Craft up to 2 Items | You may Craft up to 3 Items |
Farm Skill
The Farm Skill utilizes both the Crop cards from town and working on the farm. Farming consists of Planting, Watering, and Harvesting. This Skill relies on seasonal timing.
Plant - A player can take any Crop card from town and place it into their farming space, then draw a new Crop card from the Crop deck. Both players have 3 spaces to Plant, however, 2 of these spaces have Garbage that will need to be cleaned before planting there. (Improve pg. 11) Planting can happen anytime during the year. A player can never replace an already planted Crop.
Water - To water a Crop on a farm, the player must be in the proper Season to water the Crop. There's Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter Crops. When a Crop is watered place cubes, based on the value of the Produce Icon, onto this card. This card is now considered ready to be harvested.
Harvest - When a player harvests a Crop, they choose a Crop that can be harvested, and they remove all of the cubes from that card, and places them into their "PRODUCE BOX". That player then discards that Crop card. This space can now be planted in again.
!!Crops may be Harvested the same turn they are Watered!!
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Farm | 0 | Water 1 Crop THEN/OR (in that order) Plant 1 Crop | You may Water 1 Crop and/or Plant 1 Crop |
| Level 2 Farm | 1 | (Choose 2) Water 2 Crops, Plant 2 Crops and/or Harvest 2 Crops | Water 2 Crops or Harvest 2 Crops |
| Level 3 Farm | 2 | (Choose 2) Water 2 Crops, Plant 2 Crops and/or Harvest 2 Crops | Water any 2 Crops regardless of the Season and/or Harvest 2 Crops |
Fish Skill
The Fish Skill is a competition of who can get the most Fish from specific bodies of water. When a player chooses to Fish, they must choose to either catch the Fish for Star Points or gain their Goods.
If they choose to catch the Fish for potential Star Points, they'll place the caught Fish into their Collection Area, then draw a new Fish from the Fish deck. However, depending on your Fishing Skill, they may only be able to Fish in certain locations: Lake, River, or Ocean. At the end of the game, they will gain Star Points if they have the most Lake, River, and Ocean Fish.
A player may instead utilize their Fish for their animal properties giving the player Goods. However, this may cost the player extra time that they must be able to spend in order to gain this option. If this is done, then the player gains the Goods listed on the Fish card then discards the Fish, then draw a new Fish from the Fish deck.
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Fish | 1 | Catch 1 Lake Fish | Catch 2 Lake Fish or Catch 1 River Fish |
| Level 2 Fish | 1 | Catch 1 Lake Fish or Catch 1 River Fish | Catch 2 Lake Fish and/or River Fish -OR- Catch 1 Ocean Fish |
| Level 3 Fish | 1 | Catch any 1 Fish | Catch any 2 Fish |
Forage Skill
The Forage Skill is the main way to gain the Material resource. When a player plays the Forage Skill, they'll be able to Gather Forageables and Harvest Crops.
Harvest - When a player harvests, they choose a Crop that can be harvested, and they remove all of the cubes from that card, and places them into their "PRODUCE BOX". That player then discards that Crop card. This space can now be planted in again.
Gather - When a player Gathers, they draw a card from the top of the Forageables deck. They'll reveal the card and if it's a Forageable, they will gain Produce or Materials and place those cubes into the appropriate "PRODUCE BOX" or "MATERIALS BOX" on their sheet. Then the card is discarded. Sometimes the card can be a Bug. If it is a Bug, it is placed into their Collection Area for end game scoring. The more Bugs collected, the higher the score (MAX 4 Bugs scored).
| Bugs | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Star Points | 1 | 3 | 5 | 8 |
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Forage | 0 | Gather 1 Forageable or Harvest 1 Crop | Harvest 2 Crops |
| Level 2 Forage | 1 | Gather 2 Forageables or Harvest 2 Crops | Gather 3 Forageables |
| Level 3 Forage | 1 | Gather 2 Forageables and Harvest 2 Crops | Harvest 3 Crops or Gather 3 Forageables |
Hunt Skill
The Hunt Skill is one of the best ways of gaining both Gold and Star Points. Yet, it is extremely time consuming without upgraded Hunting, not to mention, the two different sizes of Slimes: Small and Large.
When hunting a Slime the player may choose to slay the Slime and gain the Gold depicted on the card; it is then placed into the "GOLD BOX" on the player's sheet. Discard the Slime if Gold had been gained, then draw a new Slime from the Slime deck.
A player may choose to capture the slime instead. If this is the case, the Slime is played into their Collection Area, then draw a new Slime from the Slime deck. A player will be rewarded 2 Star Points for each DIFFERENT colored Slime in their Collection Area at the end of the game.
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Hunt | 2 | Hunt 1 Small Slime | Hunt 1 Large Slime |
| Level 2 Hunt | 1 | Hunt 1 Small Slime | Hunt 1 Large Slime |
| Level 3 Hunt | 0 | Hunt 1 Small Slime | Hunt 1 Large Slime |
Improve Skill
The Improve Skill gives the player a chance to Clean Garbage from their farm and Renovate Structures. Any Garbage left on a player's farm at the end of the game results in negative Star Points (that are listed on the Garbage card).
Clean - There are 2 different types of Garbage: Light and Heavy. When a player Cleans Garbage from their farm, they will remove a Garbage matching the type they're allowed to remove. The removed Garbage is placed back into the game box.
Renovate - A player may spend Gold equal to the amount located on the bottom right of a Structure, then flips that specific card over. A Renovated Structure grants the player Star Points at the end of the game and gives that player a permanent ability throughout the game.
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Improve | 0 | Clean 1 Light Garbage | Renovate 1 Structure |
| Level 2 Improve | 1 | Renovate 1 Structure or Clean 1 Light Garbage | Renovate 1 Structure for 1 less Gold or Clean 1 Heavy Garbage |
| Level 3 Improve | 1 | Renovate 1 Structure or Clean 1 Light or 1 Heavy Garbage | Renovate 1 Structure for 2 less Gold |
Livestock Skill
The Livestock is the best way to gain Goods. When playing the Livestock Skill, you will be able to Collect and Purchase Animals. There are two types of Animals: Coop Animals and Barn Animals.
Purchase - Animals may have a Gold cost at the top right on their card. A player must spend Gold to Purchase an Animal to place it onto their farm, then draw a new Animal from the Animal deck (some Animals are free). There are 3 spaces for Animals. Two of the spaces have Garbage that will need to be cleaned before Purchasing a second or third Animal. After an Animal is Purchased and placed onto a farm, the player then immediately places cubes (matching the Goods icon) onto the card. An Animal with cubes on it can now be Collected from.
Collect - When collecting from an Animal, the player must only take a value 1 Good from the card and place it into their "GOODS BOX". That means if a Pig has a silver cube on it, make change (3 copper cubes) and take 1 as a Good and keep the other 2 copper cubes on the Pig card. Once all cubes have been removed from an Animal, the Animal has been "put out to pasture" and is discarded. The space is now open for a new Purchased Animal. Purchased Animals can never be replaced while cubes remain on the card.
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Livestock | 0 | Collect from 1 Animal THEN/OR (in that order) Purchase 1 Coop Animal | You may Purchase 1 Barn Animal |
| Level 2 Livestock | 1 | Collect from 2 Animals THEN/OR (in that order) Purchase 1 Coop or Barn Animal | Collect from 2 Animals and/or Purchase 2 Coop or Barn Animals |
| Level 3 Livestock | 2 | Collect from 3 Animals and/or Purchase 2 Coop or Barn Animals | Collect From 3 Animals Twice (Removing 2 cubes from an Animal) |
Mine Skill
The Mine Skill lets a player draw through the Ores deck, picking and choosing the best cards. The Ores deck has 3 types of Ore: Copper, Silver, and Gold Ore (not to be confused with copper, silver, and gold cubes). If a player gains these Ores, these cards are then placed into the Collection Area for end game scoring. The player will score Star Points if they were able to gain 3 of the same type of Ore. They may score for multiple sets of Copper, Silver, and Gold Ore.
This deck also contains Rubies and is the only way to gain Rubies to BOOST your skills. When a Ruby Ore or the Stone (Forageable) card is gained, the Ruby or Material is placed onto the "MATERIALS/RUBY BOX" on the player's sheet.
| Level | Time Cost | Effect | Boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Mine | 1 | "Mine" Draw 2 Ore cards. Keep 1 and discard the other | Draw 2 Ore cards |
| Level 2 Mine | 1 | "Mine" Draw 3 Ore cards. Keep 2 and discard the other | Draw 3 Ore cards |
| Level 3 Mine | 2 | "Mine" Draw 4 Ore cards. Keep 2 and discards the others | Draw 3 Ore cards and/or Craft 1 Item |
Sleep Skill
If the Sleep skill is played, this will trigger the end of the round for that player. When a player plays the Sleep Skill, they will follow each step on the card in order:
- The player may sell any number of Resources: Produce, Goods, or Rubies for Gold. (Materials are not worth any Gold).
- 3 Produce = 1 Gold
- 2 Goods = 1 Gold
- 1 Ruby = 1 Gold
- Return all played and discarded Skill cards back to the player's hand. Their hand should consist of only the 10 unique Skill cards.
- The player MUST Upgrade any 1 of their Skill Cards.
- 3a) The player will look through their Level 2 and Level 3 decks to find a Skill to Upgrade.
- 3b) This can be a Level 1 to a Level 2 -or- Level 2 to a Level 3. A Level 1 CANNOT be Upgraded directly to Level 3.
- 3c) The Upgraded Skill is placed into the player's hand and the replaced card is returned to the game box.
- Move the Season Tracker (White Disc) to the next Season.
- 4a) If the next Season is Spring, then also move the Year Tracker to the next Year.
- 4b) If it is the end of Year 3, then the game has ended for that player. That player must wait until the other player has completed their Year 3.
Once both players have completed Year 3, then proceed to End Game Scoring.
Important Note - The Sleep Skill can NEVER be discard to pay for a Time Cost or for any other reason. Also, a player can never Upgrade the Sleep Skill.
F.A.Q.
Q: What if there are no more cards in a mini deck to draw? A: Shuffle the discard pile and create a new deck.
Q: What if there are no more cards to draw from in the Food or Item decks? A: The Food and Item cards ARE limited. If a Food or Item deck runs out, then players may no longer choose to Cook or Craft.
Q: What if there are no more ruby gems, copper, silver, or gold cubes? A: Ruby gems, copper, silver, and gold cubes are not limited. If a game runs out of cubes, use a suitable replacement.
Q: Can I turn a Fish into Goods after it's in my Collection Area? A: No
Q: If I finish my season, do I have to wait for the other player to finish their season? A: No, move into the next season.
Q: What happens if I finish the game and the other player still have seasons to go? A: They will continue to play like normal until they have finished the game as well.
Q: Do I have to Upgrade one of my Skills when I play the Sleep Skill? A: Yes, you MUST Upgrade one and only one Skill.
Q: Do I have to Upgrade all my Skills to Level 2 before I Upgrade to Level 3? A: No, you can Upgrade a Skill to Level 2 then next season Upgrade that Skill to Level 3.
Q: What is the difference between Harvesting and Collecting? A: When you Harvest, you remove all cubes from a Crop card and place them in your "Produce Box". When you Collect, you remove only one cube from the Animal card and place it in your "Goods Box".
End Game Scoring
Once all players have finished Year 3, then players will count up their score:
- 1 Star Point for every 2 Gold a player has on their sheet.
- 2 Star Points for every different colored Slime in their Collection.
- Star Points (?) for each crafted Item in their Collection (as printed on the Item).
- 1 Star Point for every Food in their Collection.
- Most Lake Fish: 4 Star Points. Most River Fish: 5 Star Points. Most Ocean Fish: 6 Star Points.
- Sets of 3 Copper Ore: 3 Star Points. Sets of 3 Silver Ore: 4 Star Points. Sets of 3 Gold Ore: 5 Star Points.
- If a player has Bugs in their collection, count how many they have and they'll gain the Star Points based on the amount: 1 Bug = 1, 2 Bugs = 3, 3 Bugs = 5, 4+ Bugs = 8.
- Star Points (?) for each Renovated Structure on their farm (as printed on the Structure).
- Negative Star Points (?) for Garbage on their farm (as printed on the Garbage).
The player with the most Star Points is the winner!!!
Solo Game (1 Player)
Solo Setup
The Player Farm and Town are setup up the exact same way (shown on pg. 2-3). The player will shuffle the Villagers deck. This deck is placed face down and near the player's farm area.
Solo Game Flow
At the start of the game, before anything else, the player must choose a difficulty:
| Difficulty | Hearts required |
|---|---|
| Grassy Farm | 8 |
| Cozy Farm | 10 |
| Swampy Farm | 12 |
| Sandy Farm | 15 |
The "Cozy Farm" difficulty is the normal mode for the game. "Grassy" is easy mode while "Swampy" is the hard mode. However, for a challenge, players can attempt the "Sandy Farm". Once a difficulty has been chosen, then the game plays exactly the same way as normal, except at the start of EACH year, they MUST draw at least one Villager card.
The Villager cards provide unique challenges for the player. They will have requests that must be met by the end of the year, they'll have Seasonal restrictions, and they'll have End Game requirements.
Villagers Explained
- Requests: By the end of the year, the player must spend or discard what the Villager(s) is requesting. If they cannot, the player immediately loses the game.
- Friendship: This is measured by hearts. By the end of the year, the player counts all of the hearts from each drawn Villager. If the total is less than the chosen difficulty, the player immediately loses the game. This means, at the start of a Year, the player may want to draw more than 1 Villager card.
- Seasonal Restriction: During specific Seasons, the player will be restricted on which skills or effects they'll be able to play based on the Villager(s) drawn.
- Town Donation: At the end of the year, count up all the Gold on each drawn Villager card. They must spend that amount of Gold or the player immediately loses the game. (The spent gold is not added to the End Game scoring)
- Fish Score: When counting up Star Points at the end of the game, the player's Fish total must be higher than the total of all Fish from the Villager cards. For Example: they'll add up all Lake Fish on each drawn Villager; the player's total must be higher than the Villager's total.
- Year End/Game End: If the Villager(s) received their requests, then place all drawn Villagers to the side for the end game (Friendship, Town Donation, and Fish Score). If it is now Year 2, the player will draw a new Villager or Villagers. At the end of Year 3, after fulfilling Requests, score the game as normal. Farming Scores determine how well the player did.
NOTE: The only time the player draws a Villager is at the start of a Year. A Villager can NEVER be drawn at any other time.
NOTE: The player MAY draw more than one Villager at the start of a year to help gain enough Friendship.
NOTE: A Villager request may be a Fish, Bug, Ore, Slime, or Food. By the end of the year, the player must discard one of these from their Collection Area to fulfill the Request.
NOTE: If multiple Villagers were drawn for a Year, be sure to follow each Villager's Seasonal Restrictions, and fulfill each Request.
Farming Scores
| Star Points | Rank |
|---|---|
| 50+ | Farm Legend |
| 40 | Granger |
| 30 | Journeyman |
