  4. Place all the Cat Cookies in the cookie bowl.
  5. Place all the Coins in the coin tray.
  6. Place the Furniture Tiles beside the Game Board.
  7. Place the Cat Tiles outside the cafe.

  2. Place each player's cube on the starting position on their tracker.
  3. Players start with 2 Coins and 2 Cat Cookies.
  4. Each player places 2 Small Plants and 1 Medium Plant on the Cafe Board of the player to their left. Plants must be placed with the bottom facing the player and cannot be moved.
  5. The last person to have stroked a cat goes first! Give them the First Player Token.

Game Play Overview

Cozy Cat Cafe is played over 3 rounds, each with 9 turns. Each round, players take turns by progressing their tracker, completing actions, and playing Cat Tricks. Play continues clockwise until the final turn on the final round. Whoever has the most points wins the game!

Player Turn Overview

On your turn you will:

  1. Move your player cube up along the tracker by 1.
  2. Choose ONE of the following actions:
    • Buy furniture.
    • Take 1 Coin.
    • Take a Cat Cookie and (optionally) purchase additional Cat Cookies.
    • Adopt a Cat and draw a Cat Trick Card.
    • Invite a Customer.
  3. Additionally, you can play Cat Tricks at any point during your turn.

OR

  1. Replenish your hand of Cat Tricks.

Easier Game Variant

For a more relaxed game you can make it a little easier by reducing the number of plant pots placed during set up, or removing them entirely. Fewer obstructions make for an easier experience!

Player 4 starts with 1 extra Coin and Player 5 starts with 1 extra Coin and 1 extra Cat Cookie.

Endless Mode

Play on the backside of the Cafe Board for a larger cafe, endless game with no restrictions.

There is no Turn Tracker or Goal Tiles. You end the game when you run out of Customer Cards or Cat Tiles.

End of Round

The round ends once every player has reached the end of the tracker. When this happens you must do the following:

  1. Reset all player cubes to the starting position on the tracker.
  2. Discard the current Customer Queue, and draw 3 new Customer Cards.
  3. Award the Goal Tile for the current round to the player who satisfied the criteria.
  4. Give the First Player Token to the next player, clockwise.

The next round begins with the player who now holds the First Player Token and the game continues with the same rules.

Goal Tiles "Today's Specials"

The Goal Tiles are awarded at the end of every round and are worth 3 points each.

The player who satisfies the criteria for the current Goal Tile is awarded the tile and places it beside their Cafe Board.

If there is a tie for a Goal Tile, the player with the most Customer Cards is awarded the tile. If there is once again a tie, no one gets the point.

Further details on the different Goal Tiles and how they are scored can be found at the back of this rulebook.

Turn Tracker

As you move along the Tracker, you may come across a bonus Coin and/or Cat Cookie. Upon moving onto the bonus, you can immediately take what is shown from the Game Board supply.

Buying Furniture

On your turn you may buy furniture. To buy furniture you must spend coins. The cost of the furniture is equal to the amount of squares it occupies in your cafe.

  • Example: a Cat Tree occupies 2 squares, therefore costs 2 Coins.
  • Example: a Sofa occupies 6 squares, therefore costs 6 Coins.

You may buy as much furniture as you want on your turn - so long as you have enough coins to pay for it.

Furniture Placement Rules

  • Furniture Tiles must be placed on your own Cafe Board and within the grid lines.
  • Tiles cannot be placed on the areas shaded in red, leaving room for windows and doors.
  • Once furniture has been placed you cannot move it.
  • Furniture Tiles must be placed with the bottom facing the player and cannot be rotated.

Taking Cat Cookies

Take 1 free Cat Cookie from the Game Board and add it to your personal supply next to your cafe.

If you wish, you may also spend 1 Coin per Cat Cookie to purchase additional Cat Cookies.

There is no limit to how many Cat Cookies you can have and Cat Cookies are not a limited resource. Should they run out, use a substitute.

Taking Coins

Take 1 Coin from the Game Board and add it to your personal supply next to your cafe. You cannot take more than 1 Coin.

There is no limit to how many Coins you can have and Coins are not a limited resource. Should they run out, use a substitute.

You may exchange three 1-Coins for one 3-Coin or three Cat Cookies for a stack of 3-Cat Cookies at any time to help maintain the supply.

Adopt a Cat

On your turn you may adopt a cat. To do so you will need to pay the Cat Cookie cost for that Cat Tile and place it in your cafe.

When you adopt a cat you may also draw a Cat Trick Card and add it to your hand. If your hand is already at 7 cards then you do not draw a Cat Trick Card.

You may only adopt one cat per turn.

Some Cat Tricks allow you to move Cat Tiles - a mischievously adventurous trick!

Cat Placement Rules

  • Cat Tiles must be placed on your own Cafe Board and within the grid lines.
  • Tiles cannot be placed on the areas shaded in red, leaving room for windows and doors.
  • Once a cat has been placed you cannot move it.
  • Cat Tiles must be placed with the bottom facing the player and cannot be rotated.

Cat Types

Each Cat Type has tiles of different adoption cost and different styles of Cat Trick Card. Choosing the right cats for your cafe will be crucial to attracting customers and becoming a successful Cozy Cat Cafe owner.

  • Relaxed - Cost 1 Cat Cookie. Always napping, but sometimes discarding other Cat Tricks for personal gain.
  • Adventurous - Cost 2 Cat Cookies. Wide-eyed and a natural leader. They'll often be helpful when adopting more cats.
  • Playful - Cost 2 Cat Cookies. They can't focus on one thing for too long, and their tricks are unpredictable!
  • Mischievous - Cost 3 Cat Cookies. These are the cheekiest of cats and can cause trouble for other players. Their tricks will keep your opponents on their toes.

Cat Tricks

Every cat has its tricks! Take advantage of these to gain the edge in becoming the Coziest Cat Cafe. They can be played at any point during your turn.

Every Cat Trick Card has a Cat Type. To use a Cat Trick Card, you must have a Cat Tile of corresponding Cat Type on your Cafe Board.

Each Cat in your cafe can perform one trick per turn. If you have two Cat Tricks with the Playful Cat Type, and only one Playful Cat in your cafe, you can only play one of those Cat Tricks per turn.

Example: You have one Relaxed Cat, and two Adventurous Cats in your cafe. This means that of your Cat Trick Cards, only one of the Relaxed ones can be played.

If you play Flourish & Furnish, you can discard your other Cat Trick Cards in exchange for Coins to buy Furniture during this action.

You can discard Pickpocket for 1 Coin, which can get you a Ball of Yarn. You decide to keep Feline Fortune for use on another turn.

After using a Cat Trick Card, place it in the discard pile. A Cat Trick Card that is used does not count as a card that has been willingly discarded.

Should the Cat Card deck ever run out, shuffle the discarded cards and make a new deck.

Cat Trick Card Anatomy

  1. The Cat Trick's name.
  2. The Cat Type required to perform this trick.
  3. The colour of the Cat Type required.
  4. The description of the Cat Trick.
  5. The game edition and/or Player Count.

Inviting Customers

There are 3 customers outside on the street waiting to come in and enjoy the purrrfect cozy atmosphere that is your cafe!

Customers are very fussy and have certain requirements that need to be met before they will enter your cafe.

After inviting a customer into your cafe, take the Customer Card and place it next to your Cafe Board then immediately draw a new customer for the Queue. Your customers need to be visible for every player to see. Should the customer deck ever run out, shuffle the discard pile to form a new deck.

Customer Card Anatomy

  1. The number of Points you will score if you have this customer in your cafe at the end of the game.
  2. The customer's name.
  3. The reward you receive immediately after inviting this customer into your cafe.
  4. The Cat Tile that is required to be in your cafe to be able to invite this customer in.
  5. The Furniture Tile the cat needs to be next to in order to invite this customer in.
  6. The orthogonal position the cat needs to be in for the furniture to become Ambient.
  7. The game edition.

To invite a customer into your cafe you must have the required cat(s) orthogonally adjacent to the required furniture. The cat can be above, below, left or right to the furniture. Diagonal placement (i.e. touching edges) is not a valid placement for customer requirements. All Customers require cat tile(s) to be touching the furniture tile(s).

Example: In order to invite Shahin R into your cafe you must have placed a Mischievous Cat orthogonally adjacent to a Scratching Post. If you use your turn to invite this customer into your cafe, take 2 Coins immediately from the Game Board supply and place the Customer Card next to your Cafe Board.

Ambience

Some customers will provide your cafe with Ambience when you invite them in. When Ambience is gained, you flip your furniture token over to the purple side. Each piece of furniture with Ambience gives you 3 points at the end of the game. Furniture without Ambience doesn't score any points.

A Customer Card will indicate with shaded squares where the cat needs to be placed in order to gain Ambience on the furniture. You don't need to have all Ambience squares covered in order to gain Ambience - just one will do.

Ambient Furniture can still be used to invite in more Customers, but you can't receive more Ambience.

You can still invite a Customer in without Ambience if you cannot place your Cats in the shaded area.

Example: The customer, Shahin R, wants a Mischievous Cat next to a Scratching Post. Your Scratching Post will gain Ambience if the Cat is placed to its right-hand side. Your example Cafe Board has satisfied the base and Ambience requirements to invite this customer. When doing so, you can flip your furniture tile over and gain Ambience.

Replenish Your Hand

If you choose to replenish your hand during your turn, you cannot complete any other actions on that turn (besides going up on the tracker).

You can discard any number of Cat Tricks already in your hand and draw new cards up to the number of cats you have adopted, to a maximum of 7 cards.

End of Game Scoring

On round 3, once the last player to reach the final square on the tracker completes their turn, the game ends.

The player with the most points wins and has the Coziest Cat Cafe on the street!

In case of a tie, the player with the most Customer Cards wins. If still tied, the player with the most cats wins. If still tied, the victory is shared!

The winner can take a photo with their Cafe Board and share it on social media with #CozyCatCafeGame

To calculate your cafe's score, sum the following:

  • All the customer points indicated on your Customer Cards.
  • All "Today's Specials" Goal Tiles, 3 points each.
  • The number of cats in your cafe, 1 point each.
  • All your Ambience, 3 points per Ambient Furniture Tile.
  • Unspent remaining coins, 1 point per 3 coins.

Example Scoring

  1. Customer Cards: 7 Points
  2. Goal Tile: 3 Points
  3. Cats: 4 Points
  4. Ambience: 3 Points
  5. Remaining Coins: 7 = 2 Points

Total: 19 Points

Cafe Objectives (Mini Expansion)

Cozy Cat Cafe can be played with the Cafe Objectives Mini Expansion.

Game play is taken to a new level of strategy and replayability where each player has a unique cafe objective. These goals could involve specializing in certain cats, collecting specific types of furniture, or even avoiding types of cats altogether.

Successfully completing a personal cafe objective earns bonus points at the end of the game, and can often be the deciding factor in who becomes the ultimate Cozy Cat Cafe champion.

  • During the game setup, deal 3 Cafe Objective Cards to each player.
  • Players should look at their Objective Cards and choose one to keep.
  • The remaining cards are removed from play along with the rest of the Cafe Objective deck.

Players keep their Cafe Objective hidden until the end of the game where they may receive bonus points for completing their Objective. Calculated when scoring the game.

Cafe Objectives Mini Expansion cannot be played in Solo Mode.

Reading Cafe Objective Cards

  • 5+ - How many of the required Tile are needed to complete the objective.
  • Tile that shouldn't be orthogonally placed next to required tile - a tile that must not sit orthogonally next to the required tile to complete the objective.
  • 3 - Points received at the end of the game if the objective is completed.
  • / - Meaning "per". For example, 3 points per Playful Cat that meets the objective.
  • + - Meaning "orthogonally next to". For example, a Cat Tree orthogonally next to no cats.
  • Furniture with Ambience - any furniture with Ambience.

Examples:

  • You need at least 5 Relaxed Cats to complete this Objective. You will score 1 point for every Relaxed Cat in your Cafe. You will not score any points if you adopted less than 5 Relaxed Cats.
  • You must not have ANY Ambient furniture to complete this Objective. You will score 6 points if you complete the Objective.
  • You must not have any furniture orthogonally next to ANY of your Mischievous Cats. You must have at least 1 Mischievous Cat to complete this Objective. You will score 6 points if no furniture is orthogonally next to any Mischievous Cats.
  • You Score Points for every Cat Tree that does not have a cat orthogonally next to it. You must have at least 1 Cat Tree to complete this Objective. You will score 3 points for every Cat Tree that meets this Objective.

Clarifications

  • Please refer to the index for details on how to read the cards.

Solo Playing

Cozy Cat Cafe can be played single player using the automated card system named Botlet. Botlet simulates a second player in a 2-player game.

Solo Set Up

  1. Set up the game as described in the Setup section, with the following modifications:
    • You only need 1 Cafe Board which will be for yourself. Botlet does not require a Cafe Board.
    • You do not need to place any plant pots on your Cafe Board.
  2. Remove all the 2+ Cat Tricks from the Cat Tricks deck.
  3. Create some space near your Cafe Board that's within reach for Botlet's Area.
    • Make enough room for him to collect Customers, Cat Tricks, Coins, Cat Cookies, and Cat Tiles.
  4. Place the shuffled Botlet deck in Botlet's Area.
  5. Give Botlet 2 Coins and 2 Cookies.

The green "Master Cards" are for a harder difficulty. We suggest you take these out unless you want the challenge!

Your Turn (Solo)

Play your turn normally as described in the Player Turn Overview, with the following modifications:

  • Whenever you receive tracker bonuses, Botlet also receives these bonuses.
  • You always go first.

Botlet's Turn

  1. Draw the first card of his deck and place it next to him.
  2. Read the actions Botlet will make in the section of the card that corresponds to the current round.
    • Botlet never collects furniture tiles.
    • Botlet doesn't use Cat Tricks (however he does collect Cat Trick Cards).
    • Botlet can hold unlimited Cat Trick Cards.

Botlet's Actions

Collect a Cat. Botlet will always try to adopt the cat that is currently needed for the highest scoring Customer Card in the Queue (even if he already owns that cat). If he can't afford that cat, he will try to adopt the cat for the next highest scoring Customer Card, and so on. If there is a tie for highest scoring Customer Card, then go for highest Coins. If still a tie, then you choose. Like the Player, Botlet must pay Cat Cookies to adopt cats. He also takes a Cat Trick Card and adds it to his supply, face down.

Invite a Customer. For Botlet to invite a Customer he needs to have:

  • The required Cat Tiles,
  • Enough Coins to pay for the Furniture Tile requirement. These are paid into the Game Board supply.

Botlet always tries to invite the highest scoring Customer Card. If there is a tie, then go for highest Coins. If still a tie, then you choose. Botlet receives the reward Coins from the Customer.

Example: To invite Zoe N into his cafe, Botlet will need a Relaxed Cat and to pay 6 Coins to the Game Board supply. He receives 2 Coins immediately after taking the card.

Collect a Coin or Cat Cookie. Botlet receives the indicated Coins or Cat Cookies from the Game Board supply.

Clear the Customer Queue. Discard the current Customer Queue and draw 3 new cards.

Goal Tiles (Deposit). Add to the "Deposit" atop the current round's Goal. This can be either a Cat Cookie or Coin (you choose) from Botlet's supply. Botlet cannot spend Cookies or Coins from the Deposit.

Steal a Coin. Botlet steals a Coin from you!

Gain Cat Trick Cards. Take a Cat Trick Card from the deck and place it face down next to Botlet's deck.

Lose Cat Trick Cards. Discard one of Botlet's Cat Trick Cards to the Game Board discard pile.

Botlet's Action Cards

A forward slash is used to indicate the options available to Botlet. The selection is made according to the following conditions:

  • Always do the first action shown if possible.
  • If Botlet cannot perform that action, then do the next action after the forward slash, and so on, until he reaches an action he can perform.

Then no more actions are performed for that turn.

Example: Botlet will take a Customer Card, If he can't, he will adopt a cat, otherwise he will take a Cat Cookie.

Goal Tile Scoring (Solo)

Botlet's score for the current round's Goal Tile is summed the same as your own, with any added Coins or Cat Cookies he may have atop of the Goal Tile, i.e. the Deposit, added to his value. Botlet receives the Deposit back at the end of the round.

Example: Botlet has 1 Playful Cat in his Area. He also has 2 Coins deposited on this round's Goal Tile. His score for this round is 3 Playful Cats. You have 1 Playful Cat in your cafe, therefore Botlet wins the Goal Tile for that round.

End of Game Scoring (Solo)

To calculate Botlet's score, sum the following:

  • All the customer points indicated on his Customer Cards.
  • All "Today's Specials" Goal Tiles, 3 points each.
  • The number of cats he has, 1 point each.
  • The number of Cat Trick Cards he has according to your selected difficulty:
    • 1 Point each for Cozy (how it's meant to be played)
    • 3 Points for Catty
    • 5 Points for Cat-astrophic
  • Unspent remaining Coins, 1 point per 3 Coins.

Solo Clarifications

  • If at any point Botlet cannot perform an action, then take a Cat Trick Card for him instead.
  • Botlet never gains Ambience. He gains points from Cat Trick Cards to make up for this.
  • Botlet never adopts cats that aren't in the Customer Queue.
  • If Botlet needs to discard a Customer Card, he always chooses the customer with the lowest points. If a tie, lowest coins. If still tie, you choose.

Index

Cat Trick Cards

  • Biscuit Boost - You immediately receive one Cat Cookie from the Game Board supply.

  • Cat-Ching - You immediately receive one Coin from the Game Board supply.
  • Feline Fortune - You may discard a Cat Trick Card from your hand in order to take two Coins from the Game Board supply. Playing this card does not count towards itself or others as a discarded card.

Playing this card does not count towards itself or others as a discarded card. You may not use your supply of Coins to contribute to the furniture cost, only discarded Cat Trick Cards!
  • Forced Relocation - Move any one Cat Tile in an opponent player's cafe. The cat still needs to follow all placement rules.
