Set Up

How many players?

  • 4 players: Rule out 8 Bat cards.
  • 5 players: No cards are ruled out.
  • 7 players: No cards are ruled out.

Shuffle the deck and deal the same number of cards to each player. Set aside the remaining cards.

Give the starting player marker to the most cowardly player.

How to Play

(1) Beginning at the starting player and then moving clockwise, each player places one card, in front of themselves, either face up or face down.

If the card is placed face down, the player should call the card kind 'beasts' or 'birds'. (Bluffing is acceptable)

(2) When all players have placed their card, turn over the face down cards. Then decide which player has won (see pages 5-6).

(3) The starting player then gives the starting player marker to the player on the left.

(4) Continue to play steps (1) to (3) until there are no cards left.

Who are Winners?

All cards are the same

All players win.

Two kinds

: majority wins or all players win if the numbers are even. In the example, beasts win in this case.

: Bats lose.

Three kinds

The bats and the majority kind win. In the example, the bat and the beasts win.

If the birds and the beasts are equal in number, the bats lose. In the example, the bat loses.

Winner can keep the winning card for each round. However, the losing cards must be placed in the middle.

Deciding the winner

After the final round, the player with the most cards wins.

Variant Rules

Variant 1: Follow set up instructions as per a usual game. Before beginning, players can check their hand but must then pass it to the player on the left.

Variant 2: Deal the same hand (the same kind and number of cards) to each player.

Variant 3: For 4 players. If three bats appear, the bats win.
