Material

  • 1 colour die
  • 1 action die
  • 1 word die (= blank die + sheet of stickers)
  • 19 small chips (value 1)
  • 19 large chips (value 3)
  • 15 cards in 3 colours

Aim of the Game

Players collect chips. Three small chips can be exchanged for a large one.

The first to possess 3 large chips, wins the game.

Preparations

If you are playing for the first time, punch out all pieces carefully and stick the six stickers (according to your language) on the blank die.

Each player gets a red, a blue and a yellow card.

If there are less than 5 players, the remaining cards are placed in the game box.

Prepare the 3 dice and the chips (arranged according to value).

How to Play

The oldest player begins. Then, play continues in turns in a clockwise direction. The player whose turn it is throws all three dice.

There are two possibilities:

  1. The colour on the colour die and the word on the word die do not correspond: Each player quickly places on the table the card of the colour not shown by the colour die or the word on the word die. Additionally, they call this colour out aloud. The action die does not play any role.

All players who placed the correct card on the table receive a small 1 point chip from the reserve. Then, all players take back their card.

Example: The colour die shows BLUE. The word die indicates the word RED on a yellow background. (The yellow background is irrelevant and serves only as irritation.) The action die shows the symbol for drumming on a red background, but it does not matter in this example.

    • Players must lay out their yellow card and call out "Yellow". (The action die with the symbol is ignored.)
  2. The colour on the colour die and the word on the word die correspond: Now the action die comes into play. Whichever of the symbols appears, the appropriate action must be executed as quickly as possible.

Note: The action die's colour has no significance and serves only as irritation.

    • Clap symbol (crosshair): All players clap their hands once.
    • Drum symbol (ring with two bars): All players drum on the table.
    • "Psst" symbol: All players call "Psst".
    • "Wow" symbol: All players raise their arms high without shouting "Wow" while doing so.

All players who executed the correct action receive a small chip.

Note: The game is hectic and it cannot always be checked who did what when. So don't play too seriously and don't be too meticulous.

A player who possesses 3 small chips can exchange them for a large chip. Once a player has a large chip he cannot lose it anymore!

End of the Game

The game is over as soon as one player has collected 3 large chips. He wins the game. If several players simultaneously succeed, they all win the game.

Margin note: "End of the game: three large chips".

Variations

Confusion Professional

The culmination! If the colour on the colour die has a circle on it, it is not the word, but the colour on the word die that counts. The effects are the same as in the basic game. Without the circle on the colour die, the word on the word die counts as normal.

Example: The colour die indicates YELLOW with a circle. The word die shows the word RED on a blue background. (The word red is irrelevant and serves only as irritation.) The action die shows the "Psst" symbol on a red background (but has no effect in this case).

  • Players must lay out their red card and call out "Red".

Confusion Action

Give the symbols on the action die your own meaning. There is no limit to your imagination. How about:

  • Call out your own name three times
  • Rise and sit down while snapping your fingers
  • Flatter your left neighbour with words
  • Insult your right neighbour
  • Grimace without any noise
  • Laugh at the top of your voice

Example: The colour die shows RED. The word die also indicates the word RED on a yellow background. (The yellow background is irrelevant and serves only as irritation.) The action die shows the clap symbol on a blue background. (This background colour is irrelevant and serves only as irritation.)

  • Players must clap their hands once.

Note: Players who react wrongly or too late do not receive any small chip, but must pay one (if they have any).

Each player who:

  • lays out a wrong card / calls a wrong colour / executes a wrong action
  • is the last of all players to lay out the right card / call the right colour / execute the right action
  • does not lay out any card / call any colour / execute any action at all

must return a small chip to the reserve.

Side notes printed in the margin: "Correct reaction: Get a small chip." and "Wrong reaction or too late: return one small chip."
