How to Play GNOU

Choose a Theme

Take a theme card at random. The first player rolls the two numbered dice.

He chooses one of the two themes suggested by the dice.

Example: if he rolls 5 and 2, he may take theme 52 or theme 25.

  • 52: J'ai un chien qui parle (I have a talking dog)
  • 25: La panne d'essence (The out-of-gas breakdown)

If he rolls a double, the other players propose themes they invented, and he chooses the one that inspires him most.

If he rolls a double 6, he must necessarily tell: Comment j'ai adopté un gnou! (How I adopted a wildebeest!)

Tell Your Story

The player/narrator places the six connector dice in front of him, ordered from lightest to darkest.

He rolls the yellow die (the lightest) and starts his story with the words obtained. Whenever he wants or needs to, to get going again in his story, he rolls the next die and continues the story, necessarily using the words shown. He carries on in this way, at his own pace, until the sixth die, which allows him to conclude... in style!

Tips

Short stories are often the best: about 2 minutes is not bad (Fabien).

Measure Your Success

At the end of his performance, the narrator self-assesses by rolling a numbered die and scores the value shown.

If the other players feel his story deserved better, they may invite him to roll the other numbered die, so that he adds the values of both dice together.

Example: die + die = 7 points.

This system can prove unfair, but life is unfair and this game is life!

Next Player

The next player rolls the two numbered dice, chooses a theme, and tells his story using the connector dice. After one complete round, the first game is over.

Did you get the best score at the end of the round? Well done, you have (perhaps) told the best story... And off we go again: a second round, because you can't say no to that!

What Is the Black Die For?

Good question, Julie! The black die is a counter die that allows a variant: at any time during the narrator's story, the other players can roll it to take the floor.

The storyteller must then adapt his story and carry on with it.

Use of the black die (placed in the centre of the table) is limited to 3 rolls per story, whether made by one or several of the other players.

Start your story without thinking too much, and let your imagination run free before rolling the next die!

Authors' Note for Fans of the GNOU

Well, here we are: we love games where words have their full place, where human contact, humour and fantasy come first. Yet there is no age for exercising the mind. All at once, we had the idea of a game that would appeal, on the one hand, to adults who love wild, madcap atmospheres and, on the other, to the world of children and their boundless imagination. In short! Comment j'ai adopté un gnou is both a formidable companion for unrestrained evenings and an invigorating educational tool for developing mastery of language. AS MAMIE WOULD SAY: Oooh... but this game is brilliant!
