If you have already played Coffee Rush (base game), you can go straight to the sections "Scoring" and "Advanced Setup".
Setup
Set-up example for 3 players is shown in the rulebook illustrations.
- Place the game board in the middle of the table. Lay the ingredient tiles face up on the game board as shown.
- Remove at random the number of cards from the order deck that corresponds to the number of players and return them to the box without looking at them. Shuffle the rest of the cards and form a deck, which you place face down next to the game board.
- 2 players: remove 20 cards
- 3 players: remove 10 cards
- 4 players: do not remove any
- Sort the ingredient tokens into the two ingredient trays. Place the trays and the cookie tokens next to the game board; this is the supply. Each player takes 1 cookie token from the supply (the shape of the cookie tokens does not affect gameplay).
- Each player chooses a color and takes 1 player board, 1 pawn and 6 upgrade tiles of that color, and 3 cups. Together choose 4 of the 6 upgrade tiles, the same for all players, that you will use in this game. Each player places these tiles face down on their player board. If this is your first game, we recommend using the 4 upgrade tiles shown in the rulebook. Place the cups above your player board. Return unused upgrade tiles and other components to the box.
- Choose the first player. That player places the first player token next to themselves face up (with the "Open" side up).
- Each player takes two order cards from the deck and places them in their order queue to the right of the player board: one in waiting zone 1, the other in waiting zone 2. The first player additionally takes one more order card and places it in waiting zone 1 (so they have two cards in that zone).
- Starting with the player to the right of the first player and moving counterclockwise, each player places their pawn on a free ingredient space on the game board. You may not place a pawn on an occupied space. Each time you place a pawn, take one ingredient token of the corresponding ingredient from the supply and put it in one of your cups.
In 2-player games the initial pawn placement and some rules differ. See the section "2-Player Rules" for details.
Turn Structure
The first player takes the first turn. On your turn, perform these actions in this order. Mandatory actions must always be performed; actions marked optional may be performed if you wish. After that, the turn passes to the player on the left.
- Activate upgrades (optional)
- Move (mandatory)
- Fill cups (mandatory)
- Fulfill orders (optional)
- Passage of time (mandatory)
1. Activate Upgrades (Optional)
You may discard 3 Like cards (if you have them at the start of your turn in the upper left corner of your player board) to activate one upgrade of your choice. Choose one of the upgrade tiles lying face down on your player board and flip it face up; this marks it as activated. You may use this upgrade already during this turn (see the "Upgrades" section for a detailed description of each upgrade).
2. Move (Mandatory)
Move your pawn on the game board to collect ingredients from spaces. When moving, follow these rules:
- On your turn you must move 1-3 spaces.
- Your pawn may only move to spaces adjacent horizontally or vertically (diagonal movement is not allowed).
- Collect ingredients from every space you enter. You receive an ingredient from each space your pawn steps on during the move. The number of ingredient tokens is unlimited; if they run out, use any suitable substitutes.
- You may pass through a space that already contains a pawn, but you may not end your move on it. You may enter an occupied space and receive its ingredient only if you have enough steps to leave it and finish your move on a free space.
- You may spend cookie tokens to make additional steps. Each cookie gives 1 additional space of movement. When you spend a cookie token to move, follow all the other movement rules. In any case you receive ingredients from all additional spaces. You may spend any number of cookie tokens on this; return them to the supply. You may even enter an occupied space on the third step of your move and then leave it by using a cookie. You still may not end your move on an occupied space.
- You may enter the same space more than once. You may pass through the same space several times in one turn or end your move on a space you have already passed through earlier. This rule also applies to your starting space.
3. Fill Cups (Mandatory)
Distribute the ingredient tokens you received during movement among your cups according to these rules:
- You may put all ingredient tokens received during this turn into one cup or distribute them among several cups.
- You may not move ingredient tokens that already lie in one cup to another cup.
- You may empty a cup at any time during your turn: choose the cup and return all ingredient tokens from it to the supply.
- Before starting step 4, return to the supply all ingredient tokens that you did not put into cups.
4. Fulfill Orders (Optional)
The required ingredients are shown on the order card on the right. To fulfill an order, follow this sequence:
-
Order is ready. When a cup contains the required ingredient tokens (and no extra ones), place it on the order card to show the other players that this order is ready.
-
Order is fulfilled. If the ingredients in the cup exactly match those shown on the order card, return the ingredient tokens to the supply and place the fulfilled order card face down in the upper left corner of your player board as a Like from the customers. If the ingredients in the cup do not fully match those shown on the order card, you cannot fulfill this order. Return the cup to its original place. (The rulebook illustrates a correctly filled cup and incorrectly filled cups.)
-
Too many orders. Check how many order cards you fulfilled during this turn. The next two players in turn order, starting with the player to your left, each draw the same number of cards from the order deck and add them to waiting zone 1 of their order queue.
Last orders: If there are not enough cards in the deck at this stage, the first and second players to your left take as many cards as they can, starting with the first player to the left. After that, flip the first player token to the "Closed" side.
Special Menu: Some order cards belong to the special menu. Each time you fulfill an order card from the special menu, take 1 cookie token from the supply.
5. Passage of Time (Mandatory)
Move all order cards in your order queue one waiting zone down, after which your turn ends.
Missed orders: All order cards that, because of the passage of time, move beyond waiting zone 4 are placed face down in the lower left corner of your player board as Penalty cards. For each card placed this way, take 1 cookie token from the supply. If any player has 5 or more Penalty cards, immediately flip the first player token to the "Closed" side.
End of the Game
The end of the game is triggered as soon as the first player token is flipped to the "Closed" side. After that, keep playing until the player to the right of the first player finishes their turn (so all players take the same number of turns during the game).
Scoring
Scoring in Coffee Rush: Winter differs from the original Coffee Rush, so pay attention to it.
After the game ends, each player counts their points:
- +2 points for each Like card
- +5 points for each activated upgrade
- -1 point for each Penalty card
The player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, among the players tied for first place the winner is the one with more Like cards. If the tie persists, the winner is the one among them with more cookie tokens. If that still does not determine a winner, those players share the victory.
Upgrades
Once activated, upgrades give you permanent abilities. There are 6 types of upgrades in the game. You may activate an upgrade at the start of your turn by discarding 3 Like cards. Flip face up the upgrade token of the upgrade you activated. You may use its ability starting from this turn. Activated upgrades remain in effect until the end of the game.
- Double Pawns: You receive twice as many ingredients when you enter a space that already contains a pawn.
- Double End Space: You receive twice as many ingredients from the space on which you end your move.
- Double Corners: You receive twice as many ingredients from the 4 corner spaces of the game board.
- Double Signature Ingredients: You receive twice as many ingredients on the fruit, chocolate, water and tea leaves spaces.
- Diagonal Movement: Your pawn may now also move diagonally (in addition to horizontally and vertically).
- Jump: If you choose not to receive an ingredient token during the first step of your move, you may instead make an additional move.
(The rulebook shows the available moves after activating Diagonal Movement, and an example of moving and receiving ingredients with the Jump upgrade activated.)
Upgrade abilities combine; see the examples below.
Example 1. The blue player, whose turn it is, has already activated two upgrades: Double Pawns and Double Corners. The yellow player's pawn stands on a corner space with coffee beans. First the blue player moves their pawn to this space and, thanks to Double Pawns and Double Corners working together, receives 4 coffee bean tokens. Then the blue player passes through the steam space from which they started their move and ends the move on a fruit space, so they receive 1 steam token and 1 fruit token for this movement.
Example 2. Yellow player's turn. They have already activated Diagonal Movement and Jump. The yellow player moves their pawn to a water space but decides not to take this token, in order to use the Jump upgrade and make another move. After that they move diagonally to a milk space and receive 1 milk token, then pass through a chocolate space and end the move on a steam space, gaining 1 chocolate token and 1 steam token respectively.
Advanced Setup
Once you are used to playing Coffee Rush: Winter, apply the following changes to get the full experience of the game. Change the game setup as described below.
Chaos on the Game Board!
Place the ingredient tiles on the game board at random. First flip the fruit, chocolate, water and tea leaves tiles face down and shuffle them, then place them at random on the spaces with snowflakes. After that flip face down all remaining ingredient tiles, shuffle them and place them at random on all other spaces of the game board. Then reveal all the ingredient tiles.
Variable Upgrades
Once you have mastered the game, each player may choose their own upgrade tiles.
Recommended Combinations of Upgrade Tiles and Ingredient Tile Placement
- Snowy Day ("Move carefully so as not to bump into each other in the snowstorm!")
- Windy Day ("A strong wind has mixed up all the ingredients!"): Prepare the game board using the "Chaos on the Game Board!" variant described above.
(The specific upgrade tiles recommended for each combination are shown as icons in the rulebook illustration.)
2-Player Rules
Most rules of the base game apply without change, except for those below.
Setup
After choosing colors, each player takes 2 pawns of their color instead of 1. Choose the first player. Starting with the other player, place pawns on the game board one at a time according to the usual rules until each player has placed both of their pawns. Players receive ingredient tokens from both starting spaces on which their pawns stand.
Gameplay
- Move: On your turn choose only one pawn to move. You may not split the move between your two pawns.
- Upgrades: The Double Pawns upgrade also works on spaces where your own second pawn stands.
- Too many orders: Check how many order cards you fulfilled during this turn. The other player draws the same number of cards from the deck and places them in waiting zone 1 of their order queue.
- Passage of time: After you have moved the cards in your order queue, but before you end your turn, take 1 card from the deck and add it to waiting zone 1 of your order queue. Then check whether the end-of-game condition has been met, and only then end your turn.
Young Barista Variant
Try this variant when playing with children.
Setup
Do not use upgrade tiles. Each player places 2 order cards in each waiting zone of their order queue (8 cards in total). Once you get used to the game, you may try adding more order cards.
Gameplay
- Move: Each turn you may move 1-4 spaces. You may end your move on an occupied space.
- Too many orders, passage of time: Skip the "Too many orders" and "Passage of time" steps. This means that no new order cards are added to queues, and cards do not leave the waiting zones or become Penalty cards.
End of the Game
As soon as any player fulfills all of their orders, flip the first player token to the "Closed" side. Then continue playing until all players have taken the same number of turns. The player to the right of the first player takes the last turn of the game.
