Components

6 coconuts to open, 36 monkeys in 6 colours, 1 die, 1 game board.

Only for ease of reading, the generic masculine is used throughout; it is meant to be gender-neutral in all cases.

Goal

The first player to have 6 monkeys of different colours in front of them, one from each monkey gang, wins.

Setup

1. Fill each coconut with one monkey gang, i.e. 6 monkeys of a single colour.
2. Close the coconuts and place them on the 6 spaces of the game board.
3. Swap the coconuts back and forth until they are all mixed up and nobody knows which monkey gang is where.

Starting the Game

1. Each player in turn takes one coconut and looks secretly inside it. Then each coconut is returned to its space. Shh, don't give anything away!
2. Players then roll the die in turn. The player who makes the most daring monkey grimace while rolling starts.

The Die Symbols

Each roll of the die shows one symbol. The player who rolls performs the action shown. The symbols are:

• Eyes symbol (look): Each player takes a coconut and looks secretly inside it. Afterwards, all coconuts are returned to their spaces.
• Two-arrow swap symbol (swap): Swap the places of 2 coconuts, taking turns. The roller starts.
• Rotate symbol (turn the board): Turn the game board by one quarter turn.
• Question-mark symbol (guess): Tap one coconut and name the colour hidden inside it. Then open it so that the other players cannot see inside. If your guess is correct, you may take one monkey out, but only if you do not yet own that colour. If you guessed wrong, you unfortunately get nothing. Afterwards, return the coconut to its space.
• Monkey Joker symbol: Choose between 2 coconuts swap, secret look, or guess (see below).

So lucky! With the Monkey Joker you may choose between: swapping 2 coconuts, a secret look, or a guess.

Winning the Game

That's all there is to it!

As soon as you have 6 monkeys of different colours in front of you, you win and the game ends.

Variants

More than 6 Players

With 7 or 8 players, you already win with 5 monkeys of different colours.

For Experts

If you are experienced experts, you may not immediately name again the colour you guessed last.
