The Cockroach

Written rules text (BGG item description):

The Cockroach moves like the Ladybug, first on top of the Hive, and then one space down to ground level. The Cockroach must move onto the Hive as its first movement, and must move onto ground level for its final movement, however, its total movement on the hive is not restricted, except that it cannot move over pieces belonging to the opponent. The Cockroach is on the same tile as the Ladybug.

Rules diagram (titled "Cockroach"):

• The Cockroach must always touch a piece of its color.
• First, it climbs onto adjacent piece of its own color.
• Then it moves any number of spaces on the hive.
  • But only over pieces of its own color.
• Then the Cockroach climbs back down.

Discrepancy Between the Sources

The two sources do not describe the same movement:

• The written text says the Cockroach's total movement on the Hive is not restricted, except that it cannot move over pieces belonging to the opponent. Its first movement must be onto the Hive and its final movement must be onto ground level. It is on the same tile as the Ladybug.
• The diagram says the Cockroach must always touch a piece of its own color, first climbs onto an adjacent piece of its own color, then moves any number of spaces on the Hive but only over pieces of its own color, and then climbs back down.

The written text and the diagram cannot both be followed. Players should agree which version to use before play; this transcription does not choose between them.
