The Investigation
Items have disappeared in Rocky Beach under mysterious circumstances. The police received anonymous tips about suspicious activity at nine different locations and questioned six suspects, but could not solve the case. Now the three detectives and their friends are getting to the bottom of it.
The following questions must be answered:
- Which item has disappeared?
- Who stole the item?
- Where did the thief hide the item?
WHO? These are the suspects. One of these six suspects committed the theft. Find out who it was.
Suspects: Brittany, Dick Perry, Mr. Grey, Skinner Norris, Victor Hugenay, Wilbur Graham.
WHAT? Which of these items was really stolen? These six items were reported to the police as missing. Which one was really stolen?
Items: antique books, limited edition comics, painting, golden belt, the Super Parrot, treasure of gold coins.
WHERE? Look everywhere. The stolen item was hidden at one of these locations.
Locations: Altes Stadttheater (Old Town Theatre), Art Gallery Hall, Bibliothek (Library), Friedhof (Cemetery), Highschool, Marios Eispalast (Mario's Ice Palace), Memorial Hospital, Palisades Park, Strand (Beach).
Setup
- Place the pawns on the start spaces matching their colours. Each player chooses the investigator whose role they want to play. Take the matching investigator card and place it in front of you, with the side showing the Post-it note facing up. The markers for suspects and items are placed next to the board for now.
- Sort the black clue cards into suspects, locations, and items. Draw one card blind from each pile, put all three into the yellow case file, and set the file aside for now. No player may see these cards!
- Shuffle the remaining clue cards and deal them face down to all players so that each player has the same number. If the cards cannot be dealt out evenly, place the remaining ones face up next to the board.
- Each player receives one sheet of the detective notepad and a pencil (pencils are not included). Each player secretly marks on their notepad sheet their own black clue cards, as well as the surplus cards lying face up on the table. These surplus cards are not in the case file and cannot have anything to do with the case! Mark your clue cards in such a way that nobody can see it. During the game you will gradually see your fellow players' cards. Mark on your notepad every clue card that is shown to you. Remember: the clue cards you see are not in the case file and therefore have nothing to do with the theft.
- Shuffle the Advantage cards and place the stack face down next to the board. If you want to play Cluedo without Advantage cards, simply put the cards back into the box.
Basic Rules
Object of the Game
Solve the case! The first player to determine which three cards, showing a suspect, an item, and a location, are in the case file has won.
Turn Sequence
1. Who starts?
- Each player rolls both dice.
- The player with the highest result starts.
- Play then continues clockwise.
2. On your turn: roll, move, and enter a location.
- Roll both dice and move across the board by the sum of the pips. If one of the dice shows a question mark, immediately draw an Advantage card.
- You may move horizontally and vertically across the board. You may move back and forth and turn corners, but diagonal moves are not allowed.
- Always try to reach a location. You do not have to land on a location with the exact number: as soon as your pawn has gone through the entrance, stop. The remaining pips are forfeited.
You cannot reach a room? Get an Advantage card!
- If your roll does not let you reach any location, you must stop on the path. Alternatively, try to land on a black Advantage space!
- On an Advantage space you do not have to land with the exact number. Stop there, draw the top card from the Advantage stack, and follow its instructions.
- After playing the card, place it on the discard pile. If you play without Advantage cards (or do not want to draw one), move as close as possible to the entrance of the location you want to reach.
3. Question your fellow players and get clues.
- As soon as you enter a location, stop and question your fellow players about a suspect, an item, and the location you are in.
- For example, you are in Palisades Park and ask: "Did Victor Hugenay steal the painting and hide it here in the park?"
- Tip: ask about suspects, items, and locations that you have not yet marked on your notepad.
- Place the suspect marker and the item marker on the location you are in.
- The player to your left must answer first. If they have one of the cards you asked about, they must show it to you secretly. They may show you at most one card!
- If they have none of the cards you asked about, they answer "I have found no evidence for that," and the player to their left must answer. In this way you question all players in turn, until you have seen a card.
No player shows you a card?
- Very good! But do not let anything show. Unless you asked about your own cards, you now know which cards are in the case file.
4. Mark the clues on your notepad and end your turn.
- Mark on your notepad the cards that were shown to you. Since such a card is not in the case file, it has nothing to do with the theft.
- Leave the suspect marker and the item marker from your questioning at the location where you picked them up.
- Your turn is over. The player to your left is next.
If you have marked the cards of all players on your notepad, you can solve the case!
Winning the Game
Making an Accusation
- As soon as you have asked enough questions that only three clue cards remain open on your notepad (one suspect, one item, and one location), you are ready to solve the case.
- To make an accusation, move to the Headquarters of the Three Investigators, the location in the middle of the board. Once you have arrived there, make your accusation and say, for example: "It was Brittany who stole the golden belt and hid it in the Memorial Hospital."
- Then secretly look at the three cards in the case file.
Are you right?
- Yes, all three cards match! Super, you have solved the case and won the game! As proof, show all players the cards from the case file.
- No, at least one of the three cards is wrong. Oh no, you have made a mistake somewhere and are out of the race. Put the three cards back into the case file without any other player seeing them, and do not tell anyone which card you got wrong. Keep your clue cards secret and show them to your fellow players when they ask about them. You may no longer question other players or make another accusation yourself.
No player makes the correct accusation?
- If no player arrives at the three correct cards, the case remains unsolved. Take the cards out of the case file and show everyone who the thief was who has just escaped them, and which item they stole.
Clever Moves
Secret Passages
- If you stand in a location that has a secret passage to another location, you may, at the start of your turn, go directly there without rolling.
- You may not pass through a location within one turn in order to reach another location or a path. As soon as you enter a location, you must stop and question your fellow players.
- Example from the rulebook: you stand on the Beach, move from there to the Cemetery, and stop. On your next turn you may move through the secret passage in the Crypt (Gruft) into the Memorial Hospital. The example diagram carries the callout: "Through the Crypt you reach the Memorial Hospital."
Clever Questions
- Ask about your own clue cards. If you want to mislead your fellow players, name in your questions clue cards that you hold yourself.
Cluedo Duel for 2 Players or Teams
For this variant you must first read the general basic rules. With 2 players or teams, the following special rules apply. When forming teams, try to mix younger and older players so that each team has the same chance.
1. The setup differs from the basic game as follows:
- Follow steps 1 and 2 of the setup.
- In step 3, shuffle the remaining clue cards as usual. But before dealing them out to the players or teams, draw the top 4 clue cards from the stack and place them face down in a row next to the board.
- Follow step 4 as usual.
- Step 5 is omitted: the Cluedo Duel is played without Advantage cards.
2. If you receive no answer to your question from the other player or team, the following rules apply in the Cluedo Duel:
- Phrase your question as normal. The other player (or team) checks whether they can show you a clue card.
- If they cannot, secretly look at one of the four cards next to the board. Once you have marked it on your notepad, place it face down again in exactly the same spot as before.
- If the other player later again cannot show you a card, secretly look at another of the four cards. Remember which of these cards you have already seen.
Otherwise, the Cluedo Duel follows the basic rules.
