Gameplay
The gameplay is identical to the normal game, with the following adaptations:
- The game is played on a special board, to be downloaded from the author's website: http://www.spiele-aus-timbuktu.de/p/planneu.jpg
- The game is played with 3, 4 or 5 players.
- The game is played without fortifications.
- In addition to the palace spaces, the board has 6 palace spaces marked as "border posts" (identified by a circle) and 7 harbour palaces (identified by an anchor). A piece placed on a border post counts for both of the neighbouring provinces.
Border Post Palaces
To place a piece on a border post, a player must either:
- Play simultaneously one card from each of the two provinces occupied by the border post; or
- Play two cards from one of the two provinces occupied by the border post.
It is entirely possible to place a piece and a border post in the same turn, provided the usual placement rules are respected. In particular, if the province is empty, the player may place only one piece (palace or border post).
A piece placed on a border post scores points for both neighbouring provinces. Otherwise, border posts are treated like palaces during play, the intermediate scoring and the final scoring.
Harbour Palaces
- During the game, harbour palaces are treated as normal palaces, both for placement and for scoring.
- At final scoring, harbour palaces are counted as normal palaces in the provinces in which there is no score token.
- Then, the harbour palaces are counted separately, as if they were a province of their own. They therefore score additional points in exactly the same way as the normal palaces of the provinces scored during the game.
Example: All 7 harbour palaces are occupied. Archibald has the majority in the harbour palaces, occupying 4 of them. He receives 7 additional points (the total number of harbour palaces occupied). Barnabé occupies the second-largest number of harbour palaces, with 2. He receives 4 points, the number of harbour palaces occupied by Archibald. Claire is last; she occupies only one harbour palace and receives 2 points, the number of harbour palaces occupied by Barnabé.
