- 12 House Tiles (2 in each of six colours)
- 12 Garage Tiles (2 in each of six colours)
- 30 Children (5 in each of six colours)
- 30 Car Tiles (5 in each of six colours)
- 12 Van Tiles (2 in each of six colours)
The game also includes a spare car tile in each colour. These should be set aside and not used when playing the game.
A House is the property where children live. A Garage is the parking space for cars. A Van is parked in the drive in front of the garage (the parking space for vans).
Setup
- Place the game board in the centre of the table.
- Each player chooses a colour and takes the five children in that colour.
- Separate the tiles into houses, garages, vans and cars.
- Turn all the van tiles face down, shuffle, and place one van tile face down onto each of the drives in front of the garages on the game board.
- Turn all the house tiles face down, shuffle, and place in a stack next to the board. Repeat for the garage tiles and car tiles.
The oldest player starts, then play proceeds clockwise around the table.
Overview of Play
On their turn, a player repaints a house or garage, purchases cars, or exchanges cars or vans. Once three or more assets in the same property are the same colour, these are locked and cannot be changed. Furthermore, once three or more assets in the same property are the same colour, further assets can only be placed in this property if they are also that colour.
Once three or more assets in a property are the same colour, a child may be placed in the property. Once four or more assets in a property are the same colour, a second player may place a child in that property.
However, a child may never be placed in a property where any of the assets are the same colour as the child, and two children of the same family may never be placed in the same house as each other.
The game ends when a player has placed all five of their children in properties, or when there are no more tiles to draw.
Playing the Game
On their turn, each player may perform one of the following actions:
- Repaint a house
- Repaint a garage
- Purchase cars
- Exchange cars
- Exchange vans
They may then be entitled to a bonus.
They may then be able to move one of their children into a house.
Repainting a House
Draw a house tile, reveal it, and select a house to repaint. Place the tile on the selected house. The house may have been repainted previously. In this case, the previous tile is discarded into the game box and the new tile is placed in its place.
The rules described in "Overview of the Game" must be adhered to when repainting a house. If the house tile drawn cannot be used to repaint any house on the board, then it is discarded into the game box. In this case, the player's turn ends immediately.
Repainting a Garage
Draw a garage tile, reveal it, and select a garage to repaint. Place the tile on the selected garage.
The garage may have been repainted previously. In this case, the previous tile is discarded into the game box, and the new tile placed in its place.
The rules described in "Overview of the Game" must be adhered to when repainting a garage.
If the garage tile drawn cannot be used to repaint any garage on the board, then it is discarded into the game box. In this case, the player's turn ends immediately.
Purchasing Cars
Draw two car tiles, reveal them, and place them face-up in two vacant car parking spaces on the game board. These spaces may be outside the same house, or outside two different houses.
The rules described in "Overview of the Game" must be adhered to when placing the cars.
If one or both tiles drawn cannot be placed on the board legally, then the unplayable tiles are discarded into the game box. In this case, the player's turn ends immediately.
Exchange Cars
Select two car tiles from two different properties and swap them.
If a car is in a property where three or more assets are the same colour (and thus are locked), then it can only be exchanged if the car being moved from the property is a different colour to the locked assets, and the car being moved into the property is the same colour as the locked assets.
Exchange Vans
Select two face-down van tiles. Secretly look at them, and either place in the properties which they came from, or exchange them.
If either van is the same colour as two or more other assets in the property in which it is placed, then turn it face-up.
Once eleven vans on the board are face-up, the twelfth van is also turned face-up.
Bonuses
If a player placed an asset in an unoccupied property (i.e. one that contains no children), and the asset placed is the same colour as the house, then as a bonus, the player may pick any face down van and look at it. If it is the same colour as two or more other assets in the property, then it is replaced face-up. Otherwise it is replaced face-down without showing it to any other player.
Moving Into a House
After a player has placed or exchanged tiles, one of their children may be able to move into a house. Only one child may be placed each turn.
Move into an Unoccupied House
A child may move into an unoccupied house if at least three of the five assets are the same colour, and none of the five assets are the same colour as the child.
Place the child in the house.
Move into an Occupied House
A child may move into a house occupied by one other child if at least four of the five assets are the same colour, and none of the five assets, or the child already occupying the house, are the same colour as the child being placed in the house.
Place the child in the house.
Game End and Scoring
The game ends when one player has placed all five of their children in properties, or when there are no more tiles to draw. If any vans are face down, they are turned face up. Then players add up their score as follows:
- For each child in a partnership in a house where all five assets are the same colour: 10 points
- For each child in a partnership in a house where four assets are the same colour: 6 points
- For each child in a house by themselves: 3 points
The player with the most points is the winner.
