Setup

The setup is the same no matter which scenario you play. Then, for specific gameplay changes, refer yourself to the corresponding section on this rule card.

Before the game setup, insert each Starting card and each Merchant card into a sleeve. Then, add a random Golden Deal card (transparent card) in front of each sleeved Merchant card (not the Starting cards), making sure that their icons are visible through the sleeve. Return any remaining sleeves and Golden Deal cards back into their box. Proceed with the game setup normally, then keep some free space to the right of the merchant deck for a common discard pile.

New Effect That Applies in All Scenarios

Cubes with white ornaments: Each other player takes a cube of the depicted color from the bowls/supply. (The card depicts a red cube.)

Spice Road & From Sand to Sea

The game is played normally, with the following exceptions:

Acquire action: After paying cubes for the selected Merchant card, instead of taking it in your hand, you may strike a deal. To do so, choose a card from your hand and place it in front of you (among your played cards, but without applying its effect), then move the selected Merchant card from the row to the common discard pile. If you do, perform the Golden Deal effect depicted in the lower section of the discarded card.

If the merchant deck runs out, shuffle the common discard pile to form a new deck.

Spice Road and From Sand to Sea (continued)

Play action: You may strike a deal with a card from your hand instead of playing it. To do so, first choose a card from your hand and place it in front of you (among your played cards, but without applying its effect), then discard from your hand to the common discard pile the card you want to strike a deal with. If you do, perform the Golden Deal effect depicted in the lower section of the discarded card.

(Icon: a Merchant card icon with an arrow pointing up from the upper-left corner, and a worker figure in the lower-right section.)

  • You may return a previously played Merchant card back into your hand.
  • Ignore the 'Collect a worker' effect in the lower-right section of this icon.

Caravan Limit Clarification

The caravan limit is checked at the end of every turn. So, even if it was not your turn, you might have to discard cubes to the supply.

From East to West - Part I & Part III

Market locations: When using the action of a Merchant card directly from a market location, you may apply its Golden Deal effect instead of using the card's basic effect, then place it face down in your discard pile OR when using the action of a Merchant card of your private trade route, you may perform the Golden Deal effect instead of performing the card's basic effect.

(Icon: a Merchant card icon with an arrow pointing up from the upper-left corner, and a worker figure in the lower-right section.)

  • Ignore the 'Return a Merchant card' effect in the upper-left corner of this icon.
  • You may collect any one of your workers from the game board OR your private trade route and place it onto your Player board.

Note: In scenario From East to West - Part III, ignore the option concerning your private trade route.

Note: Some Bonus cards have the icon depicted below on the left. Consider it the same as the one on the right.

(Icon pair: the Merchant card icon from the Bonus card on the left, shown equal to the icon above on the right.)
