Components

  • 88 mechanism and action cards (4 sets of 22 cards, in 4 different colours)
  • 8 branch cards (numbered 1 to 8 on the reverse)
  • 8 blossom cards
  • 8 basket cards
  • 8 apple hunter cards
  • 1 ripening card
  • 1 gnome-cap token
  • 20 apple tokens

Players: 2-4. Age: 9+. Playing time: 25 minutes.

Object of the Game

In "Cazamanzanas" ("Hunt for Apples") each player has a secret pair of apple hunters. You must help collect as many apples as possible into the baskets of your hunters, using cunning and sometimes even cheating the laws of physics!

Game Setup

  1. Take the branch cards and lay them in a row from left to right in ascending order of the numbers on their reverse, forming a single branch (as shown in the illustration). Note: for a 2-player game, lay out a shorter branch (the cards numbered 3 to 8).
  2. Take the basket cards and lay them in a row in random order at a distance of 4 cards below the branch. Note: for a 2-player game, lay out only 6 baskets out of 8. Put the 2 remaining baskets and the corresponding apple hunters back in the box.
  3. Place the ripening card nearby. Place the gnome-cap token on the space of this card corresponding to the number of players (the pictures of gnomes above the spaces indicate the number of players).
  4. Shuffle the blossom cards face down, then reveal the top three cards of the pile: place 1 apple token on each of the three branch cards showing the pictures matching the blossom cards just revealed. Set the revealed blossom cards aside. Form a supply from the remaining apple tokens next to the play area.
  5. Shuffle the apple hunter cards and deal 2 cards face down to each player. You may look at your cards but must not show them to your opponents! Each hunter corresponds to the basket of the same colour.
  6. Each player receives a set of 22 mechanism and action cards. Set aside one of your two magic portal cards, then shuffle the remaining cards and place them in front of you as a face-down deck.
  7. Each player takes the top three cards of their deck into their hand.

Everything is ready to play!

(Setup example for 3 players: Rita, Polina and Anya, each with a deck, a hand of three cards, two hunter cards and a set-aside magic portal.)

Course of the Game

The game is played over three rounds, during which you place various mechanisms on the board that can help you collect apples into the baskets of your hunters. At the end of each round the players check the trajectory of each apple's fall and find out which baskets the apples landed in.

The player who has the most apples at home starts the game. Play then passes clockwise.

A player's turn consists of three phases:

  1. Play a card from your hand and apply its effects. This may be a mechanism card or an action card (see the sections "Mechanism Cards" below and "Action Cards" on page 7).
  2. Move the gnome-cap token on the ripening card forward as many spaces as the number of ripening points shown on the card you just played. Ripening points are shown in the bottom right corner of the card. Example: if the card played shows 1 ripening point, move the cap token 1 space forward.
  3. Discard and/or draw cards. At the end of your turn you may choose either: a) to discard one (of your choice) or both of the remaining cards from your hand and draw new cards from your deck, so that you again have 3 cards in hand, OR b) not to discard any cards from your hand and simply draw 1 new card from your deck.

After this the turn passes to the next player.

Mechanism Cards

Mechanism cards are laid out on the table between the branch cards and the basket cards. The bottom right corner of a card shows its number of ripening points.

Players may lay mechanism cards anywhere in the imaginary "columns" between the row of branch cards and the row of basket cards, even going beyond the branch to the left and right.

There are different kinds of mechanisms:

Leaves

If an apple lands on a card with a leaf, it simply continues to fall straight down.

Trampoline

If an apple lands on a trampoline card, it changes the direction of its movement and falls onto the card (or empty space) below and either to the left or to the right, depending on the tilt of the trampoline.

(There are two trampolines: tilted left and tilted right.)

Platform

If an apple lands on a platform card, there are two possible outcomes:

A. If an apple lands on a platform straight from above, it gets stuck on the platform (A1). It can continue falling only if the platform is rotated (see the section "Action Cards" on page 7) or if another apple falls onto the same platform from the other side. In the second case the newly fallen apple knocks off the apple stuck on the platform (A2);

B. If an apple lands on a platform from a trampoline, it continues moving in the same direction and falls off the edge of the platform.

Doubler

If an apple lands on a doubler card, it splits in two, and now two apples continue on their way: one will roll to the left and the other to the right (as if it were a trampoline).

Note: only 4 doublers may be laid out on the table at the same time. A new doubler can be added only if one of the 4 previous ones has been destroyed.

Magic Portals

When a player plays a magic portal card, they lay it on the table like any other mechanism card. Then they must take their second magic portal card, set aside during game setup, and lay it at a distance of 1-3 cards from the first one in accordance with the magic portal placement diagram.

Placement diagram (the first portal is in the centre of the second row; V = permitted, X = not permitted):

XVVVVVX
VVV(first portal)VVV
XVVVVVX
XXVV

If an apple lands in the first portal, it automatically falls out of the second portal straight down, and vice versa.

Notes:

  • if an apple gets stuck in a loop between two portals (for example, if one portal is laid directly under the other), it is removed from the game back into the supply.
  • magic portals cannot be destroyed.

Trap

If an apple lands on a trap card, it is removed from the game back into the supply.

Action Cards

If a player plays an action card, they must apply its effect and discard it, placing it face up next to their deck.

There are two types of action cards:

Bomb

The player removes any mechanism from the board (except a magic portal). The destroyed mechanism is removed to the player's discard pile.

Note: if there was an apple on the mechanism just destroyed, it simply falls straight down.

Rotating Mechanism

The player may rotate any trampoline or any platform by 90 degrees (now, when an apple lands on it, apples will fall from the other side) (see the picture on the right: now the platform is positioned vertically and will act just like an empty space or a leaf, that is, apples landing on such a card will fall straight down).

Note: only a trampoline or a platform can be rotated.

End of a Round

The round ends when the cap token reaches the space with the number 12 on the ripening card. The apples have ripened and fall from the branch! At this moment the players check each falling apple in turn from left to right. When an apple lands in a basket, gets stuck on a platform or is removed from the game, the players check the next apple.

Note: if there is no mechanism in the direction of an apple's fall, it continues to fall straight down.

Apples that land in baskets stay in them until the end of the game.

New Round

Before the start of a new round, if any mechanisms are directly adjacent to the baskets, move the row of baskets down by a distance of 1 card (see the picture below).

(Example of mechanisms adjacent to the row of baskets: a mechanism sits directly above a basket; the basket row is shifted down one card.)

If apples from the previous round remain stuck on platforms, they stay in place.

In the second round 3 new apples appear in the game: reveal 3 new blossom cards and place 1 apple token on each of the corresponding branch cards.

In the third (and last) round, shuffle all the blossom cards, reveal 6 cards from the pile and place 1 apple token on each of the corresponding branch cards.

End of the Game

The game ends after the third round. Now all players reveal their apple hunter cards and check how many apples have fallen into their baskets. The winner is the player with the most apples in total across their two hunters. In case of a tie, the player with the most apples in one of their baskets wins. If the tie remains, the players share the victory.
