The Game with the Catanimals
To begin the game, place the plush companions somewhere on a neutral spot of the game table. If the table is too small, you can also offer them a free chair on which they can make themselves comfortable.
Then, during your game of Catan, you only need to count a little. Whoever builds a settlement receives one point for each adjacent terrain, for that terrain's resource type. For example, whoever places a settlement at a junction between Hills, Fields and Forest receives one Clay point, one Grain point and one Wood point. Clearly, a city brings in two points per adjacent terrain. The same applies to a settlement site at a special harbor: whoever builds a settlement at a special harbor also receives one point for the resource type of the harbor, and for a city, 2 points.
Whoever first has 3 points of one resource type may take the matching plush companion, which from then on keeps them company while playing and additionally brings in one victory point. For example, if you have 3 Clay points, you receive the Clay plush and its associated victory point.
The Catanimals are not particularly loyal, though. We know this from the change of the Longest Road or the Largest Army: if an opponent has more points of a resource type than you do, the associated plush companion defects to your opponent with flying colours. After all, this one seems to respect the home terrain of the Catanimal more than you do.
When you include the Catanimals in your game, you should play to 12 victory points in games for three and four players, and to 11 victory points in games for five and six players. Of course, the Catanimals can be combined with the scenarios of the expansions. In that case, you should raise the number of victory points needed to win by one or two points, respectively.
