1. Rules
Setup
Volcano hexes are shuffled in among the land hexes during setup. Make sure enough number tokens remain for them; if necessary, remove other land hexes to make room.
A volcano receives a number token just like the other land hexes. The number shows how active the volcano is, that is, on which number it erupts.
Eruption
When the number on a volcano is rolled, the volcano erupts. The enormous masses of lava flow mainly in one direction. To determine this direction, the die is rolled again. Small numbers are printed at the corners of the volcano hex for this purpose. If a settlement stands on the corner whose number was rolled, it is buried under the lava and removed from the board. If a city stands on that corner, it must be exchanged for a settlement, since the whole city is not destroyed.
Volcano hexes do not produce resources.
2. Tips
It is therefore advisable not to settle at the foot of a volcano. You receive no resources from a volcano hex, and you also give up the security of building there. A volcano is therefore even less attractive than the desert.
Still, you should not be deterred too much. Even the most active volcano (with a 6 or 8) destroys an adjacent settlement on average only once every 43 turns, since the corner is also rolled each time, which reduces the probability to one sixth. A volcano with a 2 or 12 erupts only once every 216 times. If two attractive hexes lie next to the volcano on the board, the risk is in any case worth taking.
Notes
Gold
The sheet opens this note with a thank-you to the original designer, which is omitted here as a credit.
We wanted a bit more excitement, so we decided that there are gold deposits in the volcanic rock. When the number of the volcano is rolled, all players who have a settlement adjacent to the volcano hex receive one resource of their choice (two for a city!). Afterwards the die is rolled to determine the direction in which the lava masses flow.
For the base game we recommend replacing the desert with the volcano hex. The number on the volcano hex should be 9, 10, 4 or 5.
For "Seafarers"
Players who use the Seafarers expansion may replace the volcano hex with a desert or a water hex.
Vulkan-issimo
An interesting option is a volcanic island with three volcano hexes (numbers 4, 5 and 6). Take care that the numbers meeting at the intersections are different. The thrill: if you build a settlement at an intersection adjacent to two or three volcano hexes, you increase your chance of income, but you also increase the risk of being buried by lava.
Printable Volcano hex
The sheet includes a printable volcano hex ("Vulkanfeld zum Ausdrucken"). Its six corners carry the numbers 1 to 6, which are used for the lava-direction roll described under Eruption. The hex artwork is an image and is not reproduced here; print it from the original sheet.
Original German text (verbatim)
Verbatim German of the 1997 sheet, with line breaks reflowed. The title line and the designer credit, the closing "Eure Siedlerredaktion" sign-off, the copyright and the printing instructions are omitted. The sheet's opening block has no heading. The English sections above add the headings Components, Setup, Eruption and Printable Volcano hex for navigation; the sheet itself uses only the numbered headings, Tips and Anmerkungen.
Anmerkungen
Gold
[Thank-you to the designer omitted as a credit.]
