  • 1 Durango hex
  • This rules tile

Setup

Remove a pasture hex from the game and replace it with the Durango hex. Build your board by randomly distributing the terrain hexes, while ensuring that the Durango hex is located in the center of the island, or a part of the largest land mass.

Place the number tokens according to the game rules. Place this tile's number token away from the center, on the lower section with the lake.

You may not place a starting settlement or road within the Durango hex during set-up, but you may build on the hex's intersections and/or outer paths.

The Durango Hex

The Durango hex has 3 paths for roads (trail, tracks, and river) entering the town (center of the hex). The town has 3 settlement building spaces (station, hotel, and store). The following rules apply to the Durango hex:

  • A single player can not build more than 1 road into town and 1 settlement in town.
  • A settlement in town can never become a city.
  • Roads built into town count towards Longest Road.
  • The settlements in the town are not limited by the distance rule, nor do they limit other settlements.

Therefore, it is possible for there to be up to 3 settlements/cities on the intersections around, and 3 settlements inside of, the Durango Hex.

Durango Production

All settlements/cities built on the intersections around the Durango hex treat the hex as if it were desert. Only settlements inside the town produce.

If you have a settlement in the town, you produce "silver." When the number token of this hex is rolled, you may take 1 resource of your choice from the supply.

Printing Differences

The 2016 "Durango 2016" card (Catan World Championship edition) differs from the 2017 card in these sentences. Both printings agree on the core rules above.

  • The 2016 card says, of the three paths: "you may never build more than 1 of your roads on these paths" (the 2017 card reads "a single player can not build more than 1 road into town").
  • The 2016 card says, of the town: "you may not build more than 1 of your settlements on these spaces. The settlements in the town are not limited by the distance rule, nor do they limit other settlements. Up to 3 players may each build 1 settlement here but must build to it legally."
  • The 2016 card says: "The road you build to the town may count toward the Longest Road. Roads do not block intersections on this tile." (The 2017 card says roads built into town count towards Longest Road, and has no sentence on intersection blocking.)
  • The 2016 card's production text adds: "You must choose this resource after all other players have taken their resources (if any). This may mean that your first choice of resource is not available."
