Base Rules

The standard CATAN base game rules apply. There are only a few exceptions.

Exceptions to the Base Rules

  • Settlements may only be built on the round town fields.
  • Since some town fields are separated by only one road, the distance rule of the base game does not apply.
  • If you build a road adjacent to a town field, you may build the next road behind this town field only after having built a settlement on this field.
  • To enjoy a "harbor advantage," build a road on a red road field.

Victory Point Intersections

  • The intersections marked with a victory point symbol are new.
  • At the beginning of the game, place either a CATAN chit from the Seafarers expansion or any other marker, e.g., a coin, on each of them.
  • The first player to reach a victory point intersection with a chit or marker on it by road receives that chit or marker and thus obtains a victory point.

Players

The Austria edition can be played by 3 or 4 players. If you use the CATAN for Two variant, the game can also be played by 2 players.

5-6 Players

Translated from the German product page (catan.de/oesterreich-edition).

For the first time a country scenario is also suitable for 5 and 6 players. In this case, the victory point fields that are marked with victory point chips or coins in the 3-4 player game count as normal town fields: settlements may be built on them and they may be upgraded to cities.

Map

Translated from the German product page (catan.de/oesterreich-edition).

The map reflects Austria's geography: the positions of the cities roughly correspond to their actual locations, and the distribution of the terrain hexes also corresponds to Austria's geography. Each city has a landmark illustration and a short text on its significance.
