Scenario for 3-4 Players
Here is a scenario for three or four players for use with The Settlers of Catan.
Set Up
- Remove the desert tile from the basic set. Place the volcano tile in the center of the board. Shuffle the remaining land tiles and place two rings around the volcano tile. This will give you a normal-shaped island.
- Shuffle the harbor tiles and place them around the island normally.
- Place the number tiles as in the basic game. Do not place a number tile on the volcano tile.
- Take the extra set of number tiles. Stack them in order with the "2" tile on top and the "12" tile on the bottom. Place this stack on the volcano tile.
- Each player takes his pieces. Place the robber pawn on the volcano. Roll to see who goes first, and proceed to the Setup Phase described in the Settlers Almanac.
New Components
- The "Volcano" tile (see the illustration below).
Special Rules
Except where noted here, use all normal Settlers rules.
The Volcano
- Roads, settlements, and cities can all be built along the edges of the volcano just like any other land hex. But, there is some risk to building near the volatile heart of the island.
- When the number on the top of the volcano stack is rolled, anyone who has built settlements or cities next to the volcano receive a bonus. This is in addition to any normal production for the turn. However, the "demon" sleeping within the mountain will rumble, and hot lava will erupt from the volcano!
- The natives of the island respect nothing more than bravery. Anyone who is brave enough to live next to Catakau will be showered with gifts from the natives each time the demon within rumbles. The owner of each settlement next to the volcano receives any 1 resource card of his choice from the bank. The owner of each city receives any 2 resource cards of his choice (same or different). These are the gifts from the natives.
- After the natives have given their gifts, lava will flow down one of the six sides of the volcano. Roll one 6-sided die. The lava will flow towards the corner of the hex with the number that matches the die roll. If there is a settlement on that side of the volcano, then it is destroyed by the lava and removed. If there is a city on that corner, then it is replaced by a settlement.
- After the lava does its damage, remove the top token from the stack, revealing the next number.
- As the game goes on, the volcano will grow more active as the number rolled becomes more likely. Eventually, the activity will peak, gradually becoming less likely as the number moves closer to 12. But the danger only becomes greater! If the volcano is showing the last token ("12") and the number is rolled, then the volcano will explode!
The Witch-Doctor
- The Witch-Doctor replaces the robber in this scenario. He alone knows the mind of the "demon" slumbering in the heart of Catakau. For most of the game, he is treated just like the robber in the normal game (taking "gifts" from other players, blocking production, etc.). But he has a couple of special rules.
- The Witch-Doctor can be placed on the volcano hex, but he does not block production enough there. The natives will still give their gifts to those brave enough to make their homes there, and the lava will still flow. The Witch-Doctor is never harmed by the volcano (he knows where the lava will come out).
- If the volcano explodes, then the Witch-Doctor will have no more power on the island. If this happens, remove the robber pawn from the game (no matter where on the island it is). For the rest of the game, if a "7" is rolled, or a soldier card played, then you may steal a random card from any player, but the production is not blocked on any hexes.
Volcano Tile
The volcano tile is a hex with a volcano drawn in the center and lava flows running down from the summit to the edge. The six corners of the hex are numbered 1 through 6, going around the edge of the tile; the lava is directed toward these corners. (Numbers are shown as printed on the illustration; the illustration is the only place the tile's numbering appears.)
Game End
The first player to reach 10 points during his/her turn wins the game.
Note on this transcription: the page is a single scanned image with no text layer, so it was read visually and transcribed as printed. The volcano tile numbering is transcribed from the illustration (1 at the upper left, 2 at the upper right, 3 at the right, 4 at the lower right, 5 at the lower left, 6 at the left).
