Venomous Spider

Monster card (front). Printed title: "Venomous Spider", on a parchment banner at the top. The card art shows a grey, spiny spider with green spots on its body and pale blue fangs, set against a dark cave. The card's type banner at the bottom reads "MONSTER".

Card Contents

The card prints the following, read top to bottom and left to right:

  1. Title. "Venomous Spider".
  2. Red drop with the number 4, in the top right corner.
  3. Five yellow discs, stacked in a column down the right edge.
  4. Monster Metre, top left: a wooden panel with four round circles stacked down it.
  5. Shot strip, on the parchment band across the middle of the card. It shows four icons in a row, separated by three black vertical bars, read left to right:
    1. a red fist on a black circle;
    2. a white crosshair on an orange-red circle;
    3. a green flame on an orange-red circle;
    4. a green V-shaped mark on a black circle.
  6. Health track, along the bottom: four red drops, numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 from left to right, with a white skull at the left end of the track.
  7. Type banner, bottom left: "MONSTER", with the monster-type icon beside it.

The card has no printed rules text and no printed round-by-round sequence. Its shot sequence is the icons in the shot strip, as described in the notes below.

Notes on the icons

  • Shot strip. The base rulebook defines the shots that can appear on a monster card, but does not print the icon for each one, so the strip is read by matching each icon's shape and colour to the base rules.
    • The red fist on black is read as the melee shot: a character shot that inflicts one point of damage by default (see "Character Shots"). This is a judgment call; the base rulebook names the melee shot but does not print its glyph.
    • The white crosshair on orange-red is read as the target shot: a ranged shot that inflicts one point of damage to one stated target, with a second flick allowed if the first misses (see "Target Shot" and the Ranged Shots table). This is a judgment call, drawn from the crosshair shape and the base rulebook's description of the target shot.
    • The green flame on orange-red is read as a fireball shot that carries a modifier. The base rulebook states that "when a modifier has been applied, the shot icon will be a different colour from the base shot", and the poison modifier is green. The reading as a poisoned fireball is therefore an inference from colour. The base rulebook's modified-shot lists do not name a poisoned fireball, so this combination is not confirmed by the rules text. The base fireball is one point of damage, and the poison rules are in "Shot Modifiers" (Poison Shot Modifier) and "Poison Cards".
    • The green V on black has no matching icon in the base rulebook. It is recorded here as printed and unidentified, and is not transcribed as a rule.
  • Bars between the icons. The base rulebook joins shots in a sequence with a "Then" connector and separates alternatives with an "Or" connector. The black vertical bars on this card are not identified as either connector, so the strip is read only as four icons in the order printed. The sequence and any "Or" choice are not confirmed by the rules text.
  • Monster behaviour. The card prints no round-by-round sequence and no separate sequence box. The Overseer performs the four icons in the shot strip as the monster's shot sequence, read left to right. Where the card does not say how a given icon is to be performed, the base rulebook's definition of that shot applies.

Scan note: the card scan was read at 3024x4032, the full-size BGG image. Only the printed title, numbers, banners and icons are transcribed. The printed copyright line is omitted as attribution.

  • Health. The base rulebook says that monsters with four points of health have a health track on their cards. This card has a four-drop track numbered 1 to 4 with a skull at the zero end, and a red drop printed with the number 4 in the top right corner. The Venomous Spider is read as a four-health monster, which is consistent with the printed track; the top-right "4" is read as its starting health. This is an inference from the printed track.
  • Reward. The base rulebook says the reward shows how many gold coins a hero collects for destroying the monster. The card shows five yellow discs, so the reward is read as five gold coins.
  • Monster Metre and level. The base rulebook says the Monster Metre shows the monster's family by colour and its level by how many circles are filled in. The panel shows four circles, but the scan does not make it clear which circles count as filled, so the level is not stated here. The monster's family is not stated on the card face and is not assigned here.
  • Vulnerabilities. The base rulebook's "Monster Vulnerabilities" section lists the vulnerability for each monster family. Because the family is not stated, no vulnerability is transcribed for this card.
