Getting Ready to Play
Dealing out the Allegiance Cards
There are two types of Allegiance Cards: "Secret Society Cards" and "Cult Cards". The number of Allegiance cards used in a game depends on the number of players. The number of cards go as follows:
| Players | SS Cards | Cult Cards |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 3 | 3 |
| 5 | 3 | 2 |
| 4 | 2 | 2 |
| 3 | 2 | 1 |
Replace the excess cards back into the box. Shuffle the cards well, and deal one by one to each player. Each player must check which side they are on in a manner that the other players cannot know each other's allegiance, then place the card in front of them face down.
Dealing out the Decision Cards
There are two types of Decision Cards: "OUT! Cards" and "SAFE Cards". Deal one of each card to each player. This becomes the player's hand. Replace the excess cards back into the box. They will not be used during this game.
Dealing out the Item Cards
Shuffle the Item Cards well, then deal each player three cards facing down. This also becomes the player's hand. Place the excess cards in the middle of the table facing down as a pile.
Preparing the Event Cards
Remove the card with the words "END!" written on it from the Event Cards. Then shuffle the other cards well, and place them as a pile in the middle of the table facing down. Finally, take the "END!" card and stick it back into the pile "approximately" at the middle.
How to Play
General flow
The player who has visited the Haunted Mansion the most times takes the first turn. After that, each player follows taking turns clockwise.
Avoiding an Accident
The player whose turn it is draws a card from the Event Card pile face open, and reads out the accident written on the card. Then the player must choose a number of Item Cards from his hand and explain "How I managed to avoid this accident using these items." The number of Item Cards a player can use must be the same as the number written on the back of Event Card at the top of the pile (the next one to be drawn).
Voting
The players whose turn it is not, must decide if it is possible to avoid the accident by the means the player whose turn it is announced. If yes, open a SAFE! Decision Card. If not, open an OUT Decision Card. This must be done all at once.
If there were a higher number of SAFE! Cards, or if the count was equal, then the player has succeeded in avoiding the accident. If there were more OUT! Cards, he/she has failed.
Example: (There are four players) The Event Card, which the player who's turn it was drew, read, "Corridor: A huge amount of blood gushes towards you. Do something or you'll drown." The Item Cards in the player's hand were "Cat", "Chocolate", and "Flashlight". The number of cards specifies to use by the back of the top card on the Event Card pile was 2. The player thought for a while, then opened the "Cat" card and "Chocolate" card one by one and announced, "I lured the cat near using the chocolate, and kissed him to gain oxygen while underwater." The other three players opened their Decision Card at once. OUT! OUT! OUT! The player failed in avoiding the accident.
Time Restriction
If a player stalls while explaining how he/she avoids an accident, the other players must count out "One, Two, Three!" If the player cannot continue, he/she automatically fails in avoiding the accident.
Ending a Turn
If the player manages to avoid the accident, he/she gains that Event Card, and places it in front of him/her. If the player failed, discard the card and pile it next to the Event Card pile.
The player must then discard all the Item Cards he/she used, and pile them next to the Item card pile. Then, he/she must draw the same number of cards from the Item Card pile, and place them in his/her hand. If the Item Card pile runs short, shuffle the Item Card Discard pile and use it as the new pile. All other players must replace the Decision Card they used back to their own hand.
End of turn.
Ending the Game
When to End
When the Event Card opened reads "END!", then the game stops that instant.
Deciding who Wins
Each player must open their Allegiance Card at once.
If there are an even number of players, count up the number of Event Cards the players of each side has gained. The side with the larger number of Event Cards wins.
If there are an odd number of players, then each side must add the number of Event Cards gained by "the player who gained the most cards" and the "player who gained the least cards" in that side. The side with the greater sum wins (if one of the sides has only one player, multiply his/her number by two).
If the numbers of cards on both sides are equal, both sides win. Please friendly share the joint victory.
