Standard Mode (2-4 players, 20-30 mins)
Object
Players build tallest and sturdiest possible castles, and attack opponents' castles in the meantime. The player who scores highest wins the game.
Setup
- Each player takes a castle foundation and chooses a set of General and King tokens in same color.
- Players place their victory point markers on the starting position of the score track and place the round marker on the starting position of the round track.
- Place the hammer base in the middle of the table. Players choose any locations to place their castle foundations; but the length between hammer base center and castle foundation center should be equal to the wooden hammer's length.
- Place all castle blocks aside as the supply.
Game Play
There are 3 rounds in this game and 3 phases for each round. Scores will be calculated in each phase.
3 phases in order:
- Build! — Build your castle; and calculate the build scores.
- Attack! — Attack your opponents' castles. Calculate your attack scores after each attack.
- Cleanup & Calculate! — Cleanup and calculate figure scores.
Phase Introduction
Build!
-
Take the blocks
- If you still have your King/General on your castle foundation, take them off.
- In round 1, take the assigned 5 blocks from the supply.
- In round 2 & 3, the player with the lowest score takes any 3 blocks from the supply first. Then the player with the second lowest score does likewise, and so on up to the highest scoring player. If there is a tie, the younger player takes blocks first.
- Roof blocks are available from Round 2.
-
Players build their castles with the blocks they have, and they can build over blocks still left on their foundations from previous rounds.
- Castle blocks cannot be placed upside down. They must comply with door and window's vertical directions.
-
Calculate your "building scores"
Build Scores = A Block (basic scores x its floor) + B Block (basic scores x its floor) + C Block...
A floor is defined as the number of blocks stacked on top of another. So a block which is standing on another block is considered to be on the second floor.
Basic block scores:
- House — 1 Point
- Tower — 2 Points
- Roof — 3 Points
Example: Build scores = 3 points x 3F + 2 points x 2F + 1 point x 1F = 14 points
-
Place the General and King on your castle. The king can only stand on a castle block while the general can only stand on the foundation. Due to his royal privilege, the king can stay on the castle in any pose. The general, however, cannot stand upside down.
-
Move the round marker to the Attack! phase.
Attack!
-
The player with the lowest score gets to attack first, then the one with the second lowest, and so on. If there is a tie, the younger player attacks first.
-
Make the hammer stand anywhere you like on the base; select your attack direction and let go. Without forcing the hammer, let it fall down spontaneously to complete your attack.
- When you attack, you cannot move the base and you cannot push the hammer.
- If your hammer crushes more than one castle accidentally, they all count toward your scores.
- If the hammer gets stuck on your opponent's castle, only the castle owner may move the hammer. Should any block fall off the foundation while removing the hammer, these still count toward your scores.
- If any blocks fall off the foundation, but they fall on other blocks without contacting the table, they still count for the owner. But if these blocks touch the table while gathering the fallen blocks, they will be removed as well.
-
Calculate your attack scores after each attack.
- After attacking, the attacker scores for any castle blocks or figures in contact with the table.
Attacking scores = basic block scores + figure scores
Basic block scores: see Build! phase above.
Figure scores:
- King — 7 Points
- General — 5 Points
Example: Attacking scores = House 1 point + Tower 2 points + King 7 points = 10 points
The general which was not in contact with the table will not be counted into the attacking score.
-
Proceed with the next attack when every player has performed one attack. The player with the lowest score gets to attack first, then the player with the second lowest score, and so on to the highest.
-
Every player has two attacks in this phase. If you cannot take enough blocks in the Build! phase due to a shortage of blocks, each missing block earns you one more attack in the Attack! Phase.
-
Move the round marker to the Cleanup & Calculate! phase.
Cleanup & Calculate!
- Kings and Generals which are still staying on the foundations or castles after the "Attack!" phase will be added to owners' scores as figure scores.
- King: 7 points; General: 5 points
- Clean the Site
- Put the blocks outside the foundations back into the supply.
- If blocks touch the table while cleaning, move them to the supply as well.
Last Calculation
When all 3 rounds are over, calculate the building scores again. The basic score of those blocks which do not stay vertical is counted as 1 point.
Winning the Game
The player with the highest sum wins. If there is a tie, the player with the highest remaining castle wins.
Speed Mode (2-3 players, 15-20 mins)
Object
You need to build the most stable castle and attack your opponents' castles. The player with the highest score wins.
Setup
- Each player takes a castle foundation and chooses a set of General and King tokens in same color.
- Score calculations differ with the number of players as follows:
- 2-Player Game: 2 sets of basic castle blocks and 1 roof block. Scoring goal: 15 points.
- 3-Player Game: 1 set of basic castle blocks, 2 random tower blocks, 1 house block, and 1 roof block. Scoring goal: 12 points.
- 4-Player Game: 1 set of basic castle blocks and a roof block. Scoring goal: 10 points.
- Place the hammer base in the middle of the table. Players can choose any locations to place their castle foundations; but the length between hammer base center and castle foundation center should be equal to wood hammer's length.
Game Play
There are 2 phases in Speed Mode, Build! and Attack!
After building all the castles, the Attack! phase continues until one of the players reaches the scoring goal, and then the game ends.
- Build the castle with the same rules as in Standard Mode.
- Place your King on the castle blocks and your General on the castle foundation.
- The attacks start with the youngest player, then continue in clockwise order.
- After each attack, calculate the basic block scores and figure scores.
Winning the Game
When one of the players reaches the scoring goal, that round should be the last round. The game ends when all players has finished their last attack.
The player with the highest sum wins. If there is a tie, the player with the highest remaining castle wins.
Build Mode (1 player, 10-20 mins)
Object
You will act as a palace architect to build the tallest and most magnificent castle with the blocks appointed by the King.
Setup
- Take a castle foundation and choose a set of General and King tokens.
- Build a castle with the following combinations, each combination having a different score goal:
- Barbican: 2 sets of basic blocks and 1 roof block. Scoring goal: 60 points.
- Keep: 3 sets of basic blocks and 2 roof blocks. Scoring goal: 140 points.
- Castle: 4 sets of basic blocks and 3 roof blocks. Scoring goal: 200 points.
Rules
- Build the castle with all the appointed blocks.
- After building, place the King on your castle and the General on the castle foundation.
- Castle blocks cannot be placed upside down. They must comply with door and window's vertical directions.
- Blocks cannot be placed on top of the King/General.
Scores
After placing the King on your castle, the scores/points can be calculated. In this mode, only building scores will be calculated.
Build Scores = A Block (basic scores x its floor) + B Block (basic scores x its floor) + C Block...
A floor is defined as the number of blocks stacked on top of another. So a block which is standing on another block is considered to be on the second floor.
Suggestions
- You can take a photo when the building is done.
- You can calculate your scores/points with the score board or your own pen and paper. We suggest you start the calculation from the highest floor of your building.
- Record your scores and make a chart. You can invite your friends to challenge the record.

Players earn different titles according to the scores/points got as below:
| Combination | Qualified | Acquainted | Expert |
