Basic Rules

These rules are maintained in version Ticket to Ride Europe: Objective of the game, Game Turn, Draw Wagon Cards, Complete a Route, Double Route, Build a Train Station. Changes in this version:

Preparation

Deal 4 Wagon Cards to each player. The destination tickets depend on the game mode.

Game Modes

Normal: Include the 50 Normal Tickets and the 8 Long Tickets. (Recommended for 2 to 5 players.)

Capitals: Include the 36 Capitals tickets: 19 Double and 17 Triple. (Recommended for 2 to 3 players.)

Total: Include the 94 destination tickets. (Recommended for 5 to 7 players.)

If the Mystery Train extension is in use, regardless of the game mode, deal 1 card face down to each player, except "el mecánico". The rest will be resolved at the end of the game in the punctuation phase.

The surplus Long Tickets, and those returned by the players, are discarded.

To play with 6 or 7 players, the purple and white trains from the extension Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries are needed. With 7 players, the number of total trains is 40 instead of 45.

Transbordos (Ferries)

To complete a transbordo (Ferries in the Europe extension), a locomotive will be paid for each bus. Exception added: instead of a locomotive, the player can pay 3 cards of the same colour as the rest of the grey sections. This is due to the great number of transbordos: locomotives become too coveted and can be a problem due to too many draws from the wagon deck if this exception is not used.

Example: A grey section and a bus can be paid with any colour card and a locomotive, or with 4 cards of the same colour.

There is a new punctuation card that awards the player who has completed more routes with transbordos (see Punctuation Cards).

Tunnels

The rules are the same, except at the time to give points to the trains. Each section with tunnels is worth one more point. Example: 3 trains = 4 points; 3 tunnels = 5 points. The map has a printed diagram.

There is a new punctuation card that awards the player who has completed more routes with tunnels (see Punctuation Cards).

Draw Destination Tickets

In the Normal and Capitals modes, draw 3. In the Total mode, draw 4. Always keep at least one.

Punctuation

Points are scored as follows:

  • Points for placed trains, normal and tunnels (see the diagrams on the map)
  • Add or subtract points for destination tickets
  • +4 points for a kept station
  • Points for the Mystery Train station, if the Mystery Train extension is used and the station was obtained
  • Points of punctuation cards

It is recommended to count the points for placed trains at the end, and to count the transbordos and tunnels at the same time.

Triple Destinations

Covering a triple route: if you take the shortest route, it will give you all the points that the card marks at the final scoring of the game. But if you have covered it with more of these trains, you will win as many points as the trains you used to cover it.

Example: Ticket "León-Palencia-Burgos" value 8. The shortest route is León-Sahagún (2), Sahagún-Osorno (2), Osorno-Palencia (2) and Osorno-Burgos (2), total 8. If you made the route in this way: León-Sahagún (2), Sahagún-Palencia (3), Palencia-Aranda de Duero (3) and Aranda de Duero-Burgos (3), you used 11 trains, which would give you 11 points instead of 8.

If a triple destination is covered by two or more routes, you count only the shortest side to know the points you win.

You can never earn more than double the points of the original ticket. In the example above (value 8), you could never win more than 16 points, even if you used 19 trains to fill it. (The original prints this ticket as "Leon-Burgos-Palencia" in this sentence, and as "León-Palencia-Burgos" in the example; both refer to the same example ticket.)

Punctuation Cards

Normal and Total Mode:

  • TRANSBORDOMAN: 5 points to the player with more completed routes with transbordos.
  • TUNELMAN: 5 points to the player with more completed routes with tunnels. (Card name reproduced as printed.)
  • INTERRAIL: 10 points to the player with the longest path.
  • TICKETMAN: 15 points to the player who completed more destination tickets.

In case of a tie in any of these 4 cards, each player wins the points.

Capitals and Total Modes:

  • CAPITALMAN: 10 points to the player who arrives at more capitals of Castilla y León.
  • CAPITALTICKETMAN: 15 points to the player who completed more capitals tickets.
  • SUPERCAPITALMAN: 21 points to the player who arrives at the 9 capitals of Castilla y León. (Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid y Palencia.) [Editor's note: the printed list names Palencia twice and does not name Zamora. The nine capitals of Castilla y León are Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid and Zamora. Confirm against the map before play.]
  • SUPERCAPITALTICKETMAN: 27 points to the player who completed tickets with a start or end in the 9 capitals of Castilla y León.

In case of a tie, points are distributed, rounding down, as 5, 7, 10 and 13 respectively between two players, and 3, 5, 7 and 9 between three players, and so on.

If a player becomes SUPERCAPITALMAN, they do not also win the points for being CAPITALMAN. If a player becomes SUPERCAPITALTICKETMAN, they do not also win the points for being CAPITALTICKETMAN.

Notes

Numbers: The Normal and Long tickets do not start or end in the capitals. There are many tickets for a city, like the routes out of it. All the colours have the same total of spaces, routes and tunnels; there are 300 spaces in total.
