Presentation
Cartaventura – Les Trois Mousquetaires is a cooperative game in which you relive the story of the film "Les Trois Mousquetaires - d'Artagnan". You live the same adventure together, embodying the same character. You discuss and make decisions together.
During the game, reading the cards will move the story forward and offer you choices. There is no turn order and no leader. You are free to choose how you read: each of you in turn, one game out of two, or simply leave this role to the best actor. In the same way, when you have choices to make, discuss them together and choose the method that suits you best (majority, one choice out of two, etc.).
Goal
Follow the steps of the musketeers and reach Victory. You will progress gradually through the story. You must first find the 2 alternative Endings in order to reach the Victory card.
Setup
Place the card deck in the centre of the table, without shuffling it and without turning it over. To start the game, turn over card 1, then read it. Once read, turn it back over and place it on the deck so that it covers the following cards.
How to Play
When you draw or turn over a card, first look at the icon in the top left corner of the card to know what to do.
The 4 Types of Cards
Immediate Card (lightning icon)
These are the main cards of the game; they are the ones that move the story forward. When you draw one, read it in full, then follow the instruction (you will sometimes have a choice to make).
Object Card (hand icon)
Object cards represent the key steps of your adventure: the characters you meet, the objects you find, etc. After reading an Object card and following its instructions, if it has any, keep it in front of you.
Map Card (carte plan)
When you draw a Map card, you must:
- Place it on the table.
- Draw the cards indicated by the compass rose in the bottom right corner.
- Place these cards around the Map card at the positions indicated: to the left, to the right, above or below it.
Action Card (gear icon)
Action cards represent your possibilities for steering the story. Choose an Action and follow its associated instructions scrupulously, and in order. Some Action cards will ask you, for example, to draw, turn over or discard cards. Continue to read and follow the instructions of the next cards, for as long as there are some, but do ONLY what is indicated.
When you no longer have instructions to follow, it is time to choose a new Action card from those visible on the table.
Discarding a Card
When the game tells you to "Discard" a card, place it to the side, in a discard pile. You will no longer be able to read it.
Warning: when you discard a card, do not turn it over! Leave the last face you read face up.
Tests
The game will sometimes ask you whether you have a certain number of Bravery (crossed swords icon) or Intrigue (clover icon).
Count the symbols visible on:
- all cards laid out on the table
- the card you are currently reading
- all cards in the discard pile.
In all cases, do not turn these cards over.
If you pass the test, read the red text. Otherwise, read the black text (without reading the red text).
Example: Card being read: 1 Bravery. Cards on the table: 2 Bravery. Discard pile: 2 Bravery. TOTAL: 5 Bravery.
End of the Game
When your game is over (whether or not you reached an ending), follow the instructions on the back of card 35 to prepare the game for a new game. You will be ready to play again and try to reach Victory with the experience you have gained.
