Components

  • 7 dice of different type (6 black and 1 white)
  • 35 Sin Cards (7 per player)
  • 1 Devil Card / 5 Help Cards
  • Score pad

The six black dice come in different shapes: a d4, a d6, a d8, a d10, a d12, and a d20. The white die is a d6.

Goal of the Game

Carnival of Sins is played over 7 rounds. In each round, the player holding the Devil Card must roll all the dice onto the table. Then, each player will secretly choose one of their Sin Cards and place it face down in front of them. Once everyone has selected their Sin, the cards are revealed in order, starting with the Devil Card holder and proceeding clockwise. Each player will then perform their Sin's actions, taking dice, trying to earn the highest score, and torment others in the process. After 7 rounds, the player with the highest score wins the game.

Game Setup

Take a sheet from the score pad and write down all players' names. This will be used to track scores each round.

Each player receives a hand of 7 cards, representing the 7 Sins. You can identify each set of 7 cards by the masks on the back. Randomly assign the Devil Card or give it to the player who confesses to the most recent sin.

How to Play

At the start of each round, the player with the Devil Card rolls all the dice into the center of the table. If any dice fall off the table, they must re-roll all the dice. Once rolled, dice cannot be moved from their positions.

After observing the dice results, each player selects one of their Sin Cards and places it face down in front of them.

Once all players have chosen their Sin, starting with the Devil Card holder and proceeding clockwise, players reveal their Sins and resolve their effects.

Most Sins allow players to take one or more black dice from the table. When taking dice, players must place them on their Sin Card, keeping the rolled value. The value of a die cannot be changed when taken. Dice placed on Sins are locked and cannot be taken by others, unless they play Lust (see "Sin Effects" below).

Once all Sins have been revealed and resolved, write down the points earned by each player. Points correspond to the total value of dice placed on their Sins (or as indicated by their Sin Card). The player(s) with the lowest score also gain the points shown on the white die.

Lastly, determine who receives the Devil Card for the next round. If no one played Pride, the player with the lowest score this round (after applying the white die effect) receives it. In case of a tie, it goes to the last player to reveal their Sin.

Played Sin Cards remain on the table and do not return to players' hands. The next Sin must be played on top of the previous round's Sin.

Remembering played Sins is not a sin, so players can use memory to their advantage!

The Dice

At the start of each round, the Devil Card holder rolls all 7 dice. Six of them are black and vary in shape and number of faces, affecting their probabilities:

  • Values from 1 to 4
  • Values from 1 to 6 (Black & White)
  • Values from 1 to 8
  • Values from 1 to 10 (0 equals 10 points)
  • Values from 1 to 12
  • Values from 1 to 20

The black dice are the ones players take from the table using their Sin effects.

The symbol representing "any black die" means regardless of its shape.

The white die is special. It cannot be taken by anyone, regardless of Sin effects.

The player(s) with the lowest score at the end of a round gain points equal to the value shown on the white die. This may alter who receives the Devil Card for the next round.

Sin Effects

Greed

Take 2 unlocked dice with the same value from the table. If there aren't two matching dice, take none.

Gluttony

Take the highest-value die from the table. In case of a tie, choose one.

Envy

Score the same points as the player with the Devil Card.

Lust

Take 1 odd and 1 even die. One must come from the table, but the other can be taken from another player's locked dice. If there is no valid odd-even pair, take none.

Pride

This Sin resolves at the end of the round.

Take all remaining dice from the table at the end of the round (if any) and the Devil Card for the next round.

If multiple players play Pride, they take dice alternately, starting with the first player to reveal it.

The last player to play Pride takes the Devil Card for the next round.

Sloth

Take the die closest to you. You cannot take dice blocked by another person.

Wrath

Take any black die (from the table or from another player's locked dice) and re-roll it. If taken from another player, they must place it back on their Sin with the new result. If taken from the table, leave it where it lands.

You can try to knock other dice to alter their results. If you hit one or more dice blocked by other person, place them back on their Sin with the new result. Be careful: if any dice fall off the table, you take that value as negative points before re-rolling it smoothly on the table.

Wrath does not allow you to block any dice on your card, so you will not earn points this way in the round you play it.

General Considerations

If the Devil Card holder rolls the dice and any fall off the table, they must re-roll all the dice.

If a die lands on a Sin Card, the corresponding player moves it slightly off the card without changing its result.

If a die lands in an unclear position, the Devil Card holder re-rolls that die alone.

End of the Game

At the end of the 7th round, tally all players' scores. The player with the highest total becomes the "Monarch of the Carnival" and wins the game.

If there is a tie, the player with the highest single-round score wins.
