Components

  • 1 game board
  • 36 cards:
    • 6 carnival buses with a short game overview (1 per player colour)
    • 30 carnival cards: 6 sets of 5 cards (values 1 to 5 per player colour)
  • 39 pawns:
    • 36 confetti discs (6 per player colour)
    • 3 special citizens (Prince Carnival, Miss Carnavalo, Barricadol) with plastic feet
  • 43 tokens:
    • 26 tent tokens: 6 tokens each of values 1 to 4, 1 token "2x" and 1 token "3x"
    • 6 parade tokens: 2 tokens each of values 3 to 5
    • 4 parade floats
    • 6 movement tokens
    • 1 movement ring

Setup

Before the first game: carefully punch the cardboard parts out of the punchboard. Then attach one of the plastic feet to each of the 3 citizens.

  • Place the game board in the middle of the table.
  • Each player takes a carnival bus, 6 confetti discs and a set of carnival cards in one colour.
  • Each player places 1 confetti disc of his colour on the start field of each party tent.
  • Every player places 1 carnival card of his choice face down in the middle of the game board. The oldest player shuffles these cards and distributes them over the party tents so that there is at most 1 on each tent.
  • Shuffle the movement tokens face down and give each player 1. The front shows a party tent. Each player moves his confetti disc from the start field of the party tent shown on his movement token to space 1. He then places the movement token face down in front of him, with the back facing up. Place all other movement tokens face down as a stack to the right of the game board.
  • Shuffle the green tent tokens face down and place a stack of 4 face-down tokens to the left of each party tent. Note: put the "2x" and "3x" tokens back in the box. They are used only in the variant (see page 8).
  • Shuffle the blue parade tokens face down and place 4 parade tokens face down as a stack on the Prince Carnival space at the bottom of the game board. Place the 2 remaining tokens face down in the box.
  • Place the parade floats as a stack to the right of the parade tokens.
  • Place the special citizens on the starting spaces indicated on the game board.
  • Place the movement ring on space 1 of the movement track.
  • Turn over all played carnival cards, the top tent token next to each tent and the parade token, so that their numbers are visible.

The printed page carries a stray "De spelregels" label under the component list; it is a layout artefact and is not transcribed.

Overview

Each player tries to win as many confetti discs (each worth 5 points) and feather tokens as possible within at most 4 days. To do so, he must deploy his carnival cards efficiently and use the special citizens well. At the end of each day, players may win confetti discs and tokens in the party tents and the parade, or be forced to buy an unwanted parade float. The game ends when a player has won at least 5 confetti discs, or after day 4. The player with the most points wins.

Course of Play

The game lasts at most 4 days, as shown by the parade floats. Because 1 parade float is sold or removed at the end of each day, the number of parade floats on the board shows how many days can still be played at most.

Each day consists of a number of rounds in which players play carnival cards and move special citizens. The player whose card lies in the party tent that Prince Carnival reaches first begins. (Illustration caption in the source: "Blue begins.")

Play then continues clockwise. The player whose turn it is goes through the following phases:

Phase
Phase 1Play 1 or more movement tokens (optional)
Phase 2Perform 1 action: A) 1 movement; or B) play 1 carnival card
Phase 3Play 1 or more movement tokens (optional)

Then the next player takes a turn, unless the day has ended (see page 7, End of a Day).

Phase 1: Play 1 or More Movement Tokens (Optional)

The player whose turn it is plays as many of his movement tokens as he wishes, one at a time. For each movement token he plays, he moves a special citizen of his choice clockwise by at most as many spaces (but at least 1) as the movement ring on the movement track indicates, or directly to the party tent shown on the front of the movement token. If the special citizen ends its movement in a party tent, the player must carry out the corresponding action (see page 6, Special Citizens).

He then moves the movement ring to the space on the movement track that matches the number of spaces the special citizen just moved. If the special citizen went directly to the party tent shown on the back of the movement token, place the movement ring on 0 instead.

Finally, he places the played movement token face down under the stack beside the game board.

Phase 2: Perform 1 Action

The player whose turn it is must perform one of the following actions:

A) Perform 1 Movement

The player whose turn it is moves a special citizen of his choice clockwise by at most as many spaces (but at least 1) as the movement ring on the movement track indicates. If the special citizen ends its movement in a party tent, the player must carry out the corresponding action (see page 6, Special Citizens). Then he moves the movement ring to the space on the movement track that matches the number of spaces the special citizen just moved.

Note: the action takes place only if a special citizen ends its movement in a party tent.

Example: the movement ring is on space 5. The player moves Prince Carnival 1 space clockwise. He must now move the movement ring to space 1.

Notes:

  • If the movement ring is on space 0, the player may move a special citizen only to the party tent shown on the back of the movement token.
  • If a player has a movement token with a party tent on which a special citizen already stands, he may move that citizen to the party tent it departed from.

B) Play 1 Carnival Card

The player chooses a carnival card from his hand and places it in a party tent of his choice. He then has the following options:

The party tent is empty: He places his card face up on it.

Important: the top face-up card on a party tent is called the podium card from now on.

The party tent is not empty: He chooses whether to:

  • place his card face up on the stack of carnival cards, or
  • place his card face down under the stack of carnival cards.

If he places his card face up on the stack, the player who previously held the podium card moves his confetti disc on that party tent (if still present) 1 space forward.

If he places his card face down under the stack, the player who holds the podium card receives the top movement token from the stack beside the game board.

Important: the player may not place a carnival card in a party tent where he himself holds the podium card!

Then he moves the movement ring on the movement track to the space that matches the number on the podium card of the party tent where he has just played a card.

Phase 3: Play 1 or More Movement Tokens (Optional)

This phase is identical to Phase 1.

End of Turn

If a player still has unused movement tokens at the end of his turn, he places them face down under the stack beside the game board (he may choose the order himself). In this case the movement ring on the movement track is moved to space 0.

Special Citizens

Prince Carnival

If Prince Carnival ends in a party tent, he immediately sends the podium card of that tent face up to the parade (forming an open row of carnival cards under the game board). The owner of this card moves his confetti disc on the relevant party tent (if still present) 1 space forward. The carnival card that now lies on top in that party tent becomes the new podium card (if it is a face-down card, turn it over).

Example: the player places a face-down card under a stack with a podium card of value 4. The movement ring is moved to space "4". Then the blue player receives a movement token.

Miss Carnavalo

If Miss Carnavalo ends in a party tent, the player takes the bottom card of that party tent's stack of carnival cards and places it face up in the middle of the game board. This carnival card follows Miss Carnavalo to the next party tent where she ends. If there is already a card in the middle of the game board, that card is placed face up on the stack of carnival cards of the relevant party tent. It becomes the new podium card. The owner of the previous podium card receives no compensation.

Example: a card already lies in the middle of the game board. Miss Carnavalo ends her movement in a party tent. The player takes the bottom card of the stack in this party tent and places it face up in the middle of the game board, after first placing the card that lay in the middle of the game board face up on the stack in that party tent.

Barricadol

If Barricadol ends in a party tent, place him on the podium card. No carnival cards may be placed in or taken out of that party tent. A player may therefore play no carnival cards there. If Prince Carnival or Miss Carnavalo ends at such a party tent, nothing happens.

End of a Day

A day ends immediately when:

  • with 2 players: 1 player has already played all his carnival cards, or
  • with 3 or more players: 2 players have already played all their carnival cards, or
  • there are 5 carnival cards lying in the parade.

The player who ends the day still holding movement tokens arranges them in any order he chooses and places them face down under the stack beside the game board (in this case the movement ring does not move to 0). The other players keep their movement tokens.

Now all party tents and the parade are counted one by one.

Counting a Party Tent

Each player adds together the values of his carnival cards and the position of his confetti disc in the party tent being counted. The player with the highest total wins his confetti disc in that party tent. If he had already won a confetti disc earlier, he wins the corresponding open tent token instead.

If the player with the highest total that day won his confetti disc in this party tent, the open tent token goes to the player with the second-highest total in the tent.

Important: in case of a tie, none of the players involved receives anything!

Place won confetti discs and tent tokens face up in front of you.

Counting the Parade

Each player adds together the values of his carnival cards in the parade. The player with the highest total must buy a parade float (= -5 points). A player may not own more than 1 parade float. If he already has a parade float, he takes the top parade token instead and places it face up in front of him.

If the player with the highest total buys a parade float, the player with the second-highest total takes the top parade token and places it face up in front of him.

Important: in case of a tie, none of the players involved receives anything!

A New Day

  • Each player takes his carnival cards back into his hand.
  • The carnival card that Miss Carnavalo followed (and that lies in the middle of the game board) remains lying there.
  • All citizens and confetti discs remain unchanged on the game board, standing or lying as they are.
  • Make sure that the top token of every party tent and of the parade lies face up.
  • If the parade float was not bought on the day just ended, remove it from the game. This way it is always visible how many days can still be played at most.
  • The player to the left of the player who ended the previous day begins.

End of the Game

The game ends after the fourth day, or as soon as a player has won 5 confetti discs. Each player now counts his points:

  • Each confetti disc won is worth 5 points.
  • Each confetti disc not won is worth as many points as the number of the space it lies on.
  • A tent token or parade token is worth as many points as the number printed on it.
  • The parade float costs 5 points.

The player with the most points wins the game.

Variant for Advanced Players

If the players are familiar with the basic game, they may shuffle the "2x" and "3x" tokens together with the tent tokens during setup. (Leave the 2 remaining tokens face down in the box.)

The tokens affect the scoring at the end of the game:

  • If a player has at least 1 token of value 2 and the "2x" token, he may multiply all his tokens of value 2 by 2.
  • If a player has at least 1 token of value 1 and the "3x" token, he may multiply all his tokens of value 1 by 3.
