Components

  • 6 land tiles with the sheriff symbol (the sheriff's star)
  • 1 gold wooden sheriff figure

Setup

Shuffle the expansion's tiles together with the base game tiles. Place the sheriff figure on the table next to the game board.

All base game rules remain in effect. The rules of this expansion are added to them.

The Sheriff

If a player draws a tile with the sheriff's star during their turn, they must first place it according to the general rules. They must then place or move the sheriff.

Moving the sheriff. If the sheriff is not on the game board, the player places it on an unfinished mountain region. If the sheriff is already on a tile, the player must move it to a different unfinished mountain region. The sheriff may be placed on a mountain region even if every tile in it already has a cowboy and/or a tent on it, that is, it may be placed on an occupied tile.

Exception: if there are no other unfinished mountain regions, the sheriff cannot be moved and is returned to the table next to the board.

Activating the sheriff. The player who placed (or moved) the sheriff must immediately take one gold token from the stack on each tile of that mountain region that has another player's tent on it, and return it to the supply. If there are no gold tokens in the stack when the sheriff is placed on the mountain, nothing happens. Gold tokens are not taken from a tile that has the placing player's own tent.

Example: The blue player places the sheriff on a mountain. The yellow and black players have tents on that mountain, so each of them must take one gold token from the stack and return it to the supply. The blue player does not have to give up a token, because they placed the sheriff.

Ban on gold mining. While a mountain with the sheriff on it remains unfinished, no player may take gold tokens from it (but players may still move tents by the normal rules). As soon as the mountain is finished, the gold tokens in its stacks are distributed by the general rules, and the sheriff is removed from the board and returned to the table.

After the sheriff is activated, the player continues their turn by the general rules and may place a cowboy, place or move a tent, or take a gold token.

The sheriff and the end of the game. If at the end of the game the sheriff is on an unfinished mountain region, the owner of that region receives the gold tokens from it. If there are several owners, the tokens are distributed by the general rules.

Cemeteries

Two tiles in this mini-expansion depict cemeteries. If a player draws one of them, they place it according to the general rules and activate the sheriff as described above. If they then decide to place a cowboy, they may put it either on the prairie or on the cemetery.

A cemetery is considered finished when it is surrounded by eight tiles (on its sides and corners).

The owner of a cemetery receives 9 points plus one point for each city adjacent to the cemetery.

Scoring at the end of the game. At the end of the game, the owner of a cemetery receives one point for the cemetery itself, one point for each tile surrounding it, and one point for each city on the surrounding tiles.

Example: The red player receives 9 points for a cowboy on a cemetery (7 tiles + 2 cities on those tiles).

Transcriber's note: the source's two scoring statements do not agree with each other or with its example. The completion rule gives 9 points plus one per adjacent city, while the end-game rule counts the cemetery itself, each surrounding tile and each city on those tiles. The example's 9 points (7 tiles + 2 cities) matches the end-game rule only if the cemetery tile itself is not counted. This transcription reproduces the source as printed and does not correct it. The example's cemetery has 7 surrounding tiles, so it is not finished (a finished cemetery has 8).
