Components
- 8 new fortune teller tiles (marked with a crystal ball symbol).
Setup
When starting the game, shuffle the fortune teller tiles together with the other tiles.
When using this expansion, it is recommended to prepare the bag you draw tiles from separately. Using the bag included with the second expansion is good.
Gameplay
1. Placing Tiles
Place fortune teller tiles according to the normal Carcassonne rules.
2. Placing a Meeple
When a player places a tile that has a fortune teller on it, they may place a meeple on the fortune teller as a fortune teller in the tent. Under the normal rules, a meeple may also be placed on another part of the tile.
Each player may have at most 2 meeples on fortune teller tents at the same time.
Benefits of Fortune Tellers
A player who has placed a meeple on a fortune teller tent draws one additional tile at the start of their turn.
Since at most 2 fortune tellers can be placed, a player draws at most 3 tiles. They choose one of the tiles to place. Return the remaining tiles to the bag and shuffle it.
If a player loses a fortune teller (see 3. Scoring), they lose the ability to draw the additional tile.
3. Scoring
When a Fortune Teller Tent Is Completed
A fortune teller tent is completed when tiles are placed on all four sides of it, and it is then scored.
The player who completes the tent by placing a tile on the last of its four sides receives 3 points. Of course, the player who has the fortune teller may also be the one who completes it.
A player whose fortune teller is in a completed tent immediately returns the meeple to their supply. The extra tile-drawing ability of that fortune teller can no longer be used.
Diagram caption (page 2): Red places a tile above the tent, completing the fortune teller tent; red receives 3 points. Blue returns the meeple to the supply.
Final Scoring
When the game ends, fortune tellers remaining on tiles do not receive any additional points.
Playing with Other Expansions
The Fortune Teller expansion is designed to combine with any other Carcassonne expansion. The rules for specific expansions are listed below.
Additional Rules for Some Expansions
Traders and Builders: The pig and the builder cannot both be placed as fortune tellers.
Translator's note: the Korean sentence for this rule is ambiguous and can be read as "not both" or as "neither"; it is rendered here as "not both" and should be checked against the English original if one is found.
If a player has a fortune teller and takes an extra turn because of the builder, they do not draw a new tile. Instead, they must use the second tile they drew at the start of the turn.
If a player has two fortune tellers and takes an extra turn, they choose the tile to place from among the tiles they hold.
Princess and Dragon: Meeples used as fortune tellers follow the same rules as normal meeples in this expansion.
- A fortune teller that does not receive the protection of a fairy is eaten by the dragon.
- If a fairy is next to a fortune teller, that player receives 1 point each time a turn begins.
- When a fortune teller tent is completed, regardless of which player completed it, the fortune teller in the tent together with a fairy receives 3 points.
Also, using the magic gate, a meeple may be placed on an empty, incomplete fortune teller tile.
Tower: A fortune teller may be counted with the meeples placed in a tower under the normal tower rules.
Abbey and Mayor: The Mayor cannot be placed as a fortune teller. The wagon can be placed as a fortune teller. The wagon may also be placed in a fortune teller tent and moved using the wagon's ability as usual.
Catapult: A fortune teller can be removed or seduced by a token.
Count of Carcassonne: A meeple from the city of Carcassonne cannot be placed in a fortune teller tent.
