Overview of the New Elements
Each new game element is explained in relation to the 3 actions:
- Place a land tile
- Place a meeple
- Score points
If an action is not explained in detail, the base rules apply.
The Bridge
1. Place a land tile
Building a bridge
As long as there are bridges available in the supply, an additional placement rule applies. This rule affects all land tiles that show only field on 2 opposite edges (without an open road, etc.).
These are some examples for tiles with 2 opposite field edges.
- You may place such a tile so that at least one of the 2 edges with field is adjacent to an open road.
- If you place a land tile like this, you must take 1 bridge from the supply and place it on that tile so that it connects to the road. The bridge continues the road like a straight road segment.
- Accordingly, in a later turn you may continue that road by placing a land tile with a road so that it connects to the open end of the already placed bridge.
There can only be 1 bridge on each tile. Fields are not separated by bridges.
Important: A road may contain as many bridges as you like. However, you must not place a land tile in such a way that two bridges would touch.
2. Place a meeple
As usual, you may place a meeple on the tile you just placed, even if you placed a bridge on it in Step 1. You may also place a meeple on a feature below the bridge. Bridges do not stand in the way of other figures.
You may also place your meeple on bridges. Since a bridge is part of a road, the usual placement rules apply (e.g., the road that the bridge is part of must not be occupied).
3. Score points
If one of your roads with at least 1 bridge is completed, you score 1 point per tile with a road segment as usual. However, for each bridge that is part of this road, you score 3 points instead. When scoring roads with bridges, majorities are determined as usual.
Example: You completed a road with 1 bridge and score 3 points for the 3 tiles with a road and additionally 3 points for the bridge, i.e. a total of 6 points.
Important: If a completed road runs under one of its own bridges, you score 1 point for the tile with the road and 3 points for the bridge.
Example: You completed a road with 2 bridges. Both Blue and you each score 13 points: 7 for the road segments and additionally 6 points (2 x 3) for the 2 bridges.
If you score points for roads in the final scoring, each bridge scores only 1 point.
The Castle
1. Place a land tile
Building a castle
As long as there are castle tiles available in the supply: If you place a land tile that completes a city consisting of exactly 2 city segments, you may choose to build a castle. Take a castle tile from the supply and place it on the completed city. If a standard meeple of any colour is already in the city, move it onto the newly placed castle tile. It is no longer considered a knight but a maiden.
- You complete a city consisting of 2 city segments and place a castle tile on it.
- Since there was already a standard meeple in the city, you place it on the castle.
You must not build a castle if there is a figure other than a standard meeple in the corresponding city (this might happen if you play with other expansions).
Important: If you build a castle, you do not score the city underneath.
2. Place a meeple
If you have built a castle in Step 1 and there is no maiden on it yet, you may place a standard meeple as a maiden on that castle.
3. Score points
Scoring your maiden
If you do not place a meeple during Step 2 and do not return your abbot instead, you may instead return 1 of your maidens from any castle of your choice to your supply.
You immediately go to Step 3 of your turn and score 1 point per knight and per maiden in the playing area (regardless of their colour). You also score 1 point for the maiden you have taken back. After that you score completed features etc. as usual.
Important: If in this turn you have turned a knight into a maiden by building a castle, you may not return this maiden to score it in the same turn.
Example: You have not placed a meeple in this turn and instead score your maiden, which has been standing on a castle at the beginning of your turn. You take the maiden back and score 1 point for it. Additionally, you score 1 point for the yellow maiden and each knight in the playing area. In total, you score 5 x 1 = 5 points.
In the farmer scoring, you score 3 points for each city with a castle tile touching your field as usual.
The Barn
1. Place a land tile
Building a barn
As long as there are still barn tiles in the supply, you may build a barn if you place a tile in such a way that the following conditions are met:
- The placed tile must be one of exactly 4 tiles that touch at 4 corners.
- These 4 corners must show only fields, no cities, city walls, etc.
- The 4 field segments must be part of a field on which at least 1 of your farmers is present that has not been moved onto a barn yet (more on this later).
If all 3 conditions are met, you may take a barn tile from the supply and place it on the point where all 4 field corners touch.
Example: You place a tile so that 4 corners that show only field touch at one point. Since you also have a farmer on this field, you may build a barn. You take a barn tile from the supply and place it on the point where the 4 field corners touch.
In this case, a city wall at the touching point prevents the building of a barn.
After building a barn, you must immediately move 1 of your farmers from the same field onto the barn and score that barn in Step 3. Farmers already lying on barns cannot be moved onto other barns. Each barn can only be scored once. Farmers on barns are still considered farmers. There is no limit to the number of barns that can be built on a single field.
Example: You have built a barn and now move one of your farmers from the same field onto it to score that barn in Step 3.
2. Place a meeple
You must not place a farmer directly onto a barn.
3. Score points
If you have built a barn in Step 1 and moved a farmer onto it, you now score 1 point for each farmer (regardless of their colour) in the playing area. Farmers on barns count as farmers. Then you resolve all other scoring as usual.
Example: You have built a barn and moved your farmer onto it to score it. You score 1 point for each farmer in the playing area. You score 4 points in total.
Farmers on barns participate in the farmer scoring as usual.
Important: You may only build a maximum of 1 building per turn: 1 bridge or 1 castle or 1 barn.
Special Land Tiles
On some tiles, a road ends in a village and separates the two adjacent field segments while the other road does not end in the village.
The 2 field segments above the river are separated by the city.
Both roads end in the village.
