Components
- 56 Pirate cards
- 16 Galleon cards
In Capitán Bacon all cards have the same design on their back, but you can easily tell them apart by their front. Galleon cards have a wooden background and a ship engraved in the top right corner.
Object of the Game
Collect a complete set of Treasures in your hand (the number needed varies by type). At the start of the game, the Treasures are distributed between the two decks as follows:
| Treasure | Pirate deck | Galleon deck | Copies needed to win |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treasure chest | 0 | 3 | 3 |
| Diamond | 0 | 3 | 3 |
| Piggy bank | 1 | 4 | 4 |
| Gold bar | 1 | 4 | 4 |
| Barrel | 3 | 5 | 5 |
| Sack | 3 | 5 | 5 |
Some cards show 2 Treasures. If you have a card with 2 Treasures in your hand, you are considered to have both. This can help you decide which set to try to complete to win the game.
Game Setup
Separate the Galleon cards from the Pirate cards.
Shuffle the Galleon cards and place them inside the game box, forming a deck, with the Treasures face up.
Next, shuffle the Pirate cards and then place 8 cards at random, separated, face down, in the center of the table. We'll call these cards Islands.
Deal a starting hand of 5 Pirate cards to each person. Leave the rest on the table, face down, forming the Pirate deck. Leave a space next to it for the Discard Pile.
Your hand is limited and can never exceed 5 cards. It's important to keep this in mind when deciding what to bury and what to keep.
Game Turn
The youngest member of the crew starts the game, and play proceeds in turns clockwise.
During your turn, you can perform one of these three possible actions:
Pass
You decide to do nothing on your turn and it passes to the next person.
Bury Cards
Place on the table, face down, as many cards from your hand as you want, without showing them. Do so near the other cards, thus forming new Islands. Burying cards can be used to hide Treasures and recover them later or, simply, to get rid of cards you don't want in your hand. Remembering where you bury your cards will help you in the future.
Play Cards
Play as many identical cards from your hand as you want. You don't have to play them all.
Cards are played one at a time, resolving their effect and leaving them face up on the Discard Pile. You can choose who you play each card against. If during your turn you obtain more identical cards to the ones you have played this turn, you can play them too.
End of Turn
At the end of your turn, take cards from the Pirate deck until you have 5 cards in hand again.
At some point in the game there may be no Islands left on the table; in that case, take 8 cards from the Pirate deck and place them face down on the table, forming new Islands.
If you need to take cards from the Pirate deck and there aren't enough, shuffle the Discard Pile and form a new deck.
The Pirate Cards
- Shovel (15 cards): Take 1 Island from the center of the table, without looking at it.
- Boarding (11 cards): Take the top Treasure card from the Galleon. You can't count the cards remaining on the ship. If you take the last card of the Galleon, the game ends immediately.
- Fishing Rod (9 cards): Steal 1 card at random from another person's hand.
- Mirror (3 cards): Play the Mirror outside your turn, in response to a Fishing Rod, Spyglass or Drop Ballast card someone plays against you. Apply that card's effect against that person. Discard the Mirror as soon as you use it. A Mirror cannot be played in response to another Mirror. Remember that you won't refill your hand until the end of your turn.
- Spyglass (4 cards): Look at another person's entire hand and steal 1 of their cards.
- Map (4 cards): Look at 1 Island. You can keep it, or you can leave it and look at another. If the second card doesn't convince you, you can go for the third, which you must keep no matter what. When looking at Islands, try not to move them when putting them back on the table. If there are fewer than 3 cards on the table you'll have to stop earlier.
- Drop Ballast (1 card): Force another person to show and bury their entire hand. That person chooses where to bury each of their cards, forming new Islands. Then that person takes 5 new cards from the Pirate deck.
- Switcheroo (1 card): Exchange your entire hand with another person's hand, regardless of the number of cards in each hand.
End of the Game
The game ends immediately when one of the following conditions is met:
- If you get a complete set of Treasures. You must have the indicated number of cards of that Treasure in your hand. Congratulations, the Black Truffle is yours!
- If you take the last Galleon card.
- If you need to take a card from the Pirate deck and there are none left in the deck or in the Discard Pile.
In cases 2 and 3, to find out who wins, count the Treasures in your hands. In this case, cards with 2 Treasures count double. The person with the most Treasures in hand wins the game. In case of a tie, the victory is shared.
Example: In a 6-person game, Claudia takes the last Galleon card. She has not completed a full set of Treasures with it, so each person counts the Treasures in their hand, regardless of type. Elisa and Héctor have 3 Treasures, Alessandra has 4, Sofía and Claudia have 5 and Noemí 6. Noemí wins. We have a new captain of the Black Truffle!
Express Buccaneer Mode
If you want to play even faster games, try playing with 6 cards in hand instead of the usual 5.
