The Butterfly

Written rules text (BGG item description):

The Butterfly moves two spaces on top of the Hive but cannot move down off the Hive.

Rules diagram (titled "Butterfly"):

  • Copies movement or ability of a piece that moved last turn.
  • It cannot copy a movement or ability that is incompatible with Butterfly's current position.
    • For example, while on the hive, it can't copy a Spider.
  • Butterfly cannot copy another Butterfly.

Diagram illustrations:

  • Left panel: a Butterfly on the ground shows two green three-step paths, numbered 1, 2 and 3, one ending on a hex at the top of the board and one ending on a hex to the lower right. A bug piece marked "moved last turn" sits nearby. The Butterfly is shown copying that piece's movement.
  • Right panel: a Butterfly on top of the Hive is marked with a red X, next to a bug piece marked "moved last turn". The Butterfly cannot copy that piece's ability while it is on the Hive.

Discrepancy Between the Sources

The two sources do not describe the same movement:

  • The written text gives a fixed movement: the Butterfly moves two spaces on top of the Hive and cannot move down off the Hive. It says nothing about copying.
  • The diagram says the Butterfly copies the movement or ability of a piece that moved last turn, subject to the compatibility limits above and the restriction that it cannot copy another Butterfly. It says nothing about a fixed two-space move.

The written text and the diagram cannot both be followed as stated. Players should agree which version to use before play; this transcription does not choose between them.
