Setup

17 animals are shuffled together with the other cards. Setup is otherwise done as described in the base rules. With the 17 extra cards the deck grows slightly, which does not significantly change the game. The game may last 1 round longer.

Each player receives 1 Animal Majority marker in their color. At the start of the game it is placed in front of the player, gray side up.

Animal Cards

The 17 animals belong to a new card group, animals. The cards are built the same way as the base game cards. Each animal card can be used for any of the 6 actions.

The back of an animal card is slightly more detailed, but this is a visual difference only. An animal card can be played like any other card to build a house, and that house scores 1 point at game end, like other houses. As usual, a character can be recruited into an animal's house.

Animals Are Characters

Wherever the rules or cards refer to a "character," this also applies to animals. The exceptions are listed below.

Note: The Watchdog from the base game is not an "animal"!

New Rules

Action 6: Recruit 1 Person

An animal can be recruited not only into an empty house, but also into a house already occupied by a character. If an animal is recruited into an empty house, a character may later be recruited into that same house as well. In this way, each house can hold 1 character and 1 animal. The character card must lie on top so that its effect is visible.

Notes on Threats

  • Plague: A player may also discard an animal instead of a "regular" character.
  • Fire: When a player discards a house, everyone living there returns to that player's hand.

Animals Cannot Be Activated

Animals have no effect, so they cannot be activated like characters. They simply live there, give milk, lay eggs, and keep people company.

Phase 4: Verify the Majorities

The majorities in the three categories (reputation, characters, canal) are verified as in the base game.

Note: When determining the majority in characters, animals are not counted.

After that, the animal majority is also verified. If a player is the sole majority holder for animals, they may flip their Animal Majority marker to its colored side.

Points at Game End

Animals score more points than ordinary characters. The points are printed on the animal card.
