1 game board 1 punch-out sheet with 16 rubbish pieces, 8 newspaper bundles, 7 cards for the 7 days of the week, and a small game board 12 plastic bottles 1 garbage truck 4 rubbish bins 1 die
Goal of the Game
The goal of the game is to get all the rubbish out of the houses together and to set it out in front of the houses, sorted into bottles, waste paper and household rubbish, before the garbage truck comes.
Setup
The children divide the houses on the game board among themselves. The small, narrow board is laid on to the main board so that the street continues. The narrow board has 7 spaces for the 7 days of the week. On the seventh day the garbage truck comes into the neighbourhood on our game board. For this reason the card showing the weekday on which the garbage truck comes is placed on the seventh space. Since this differs from place to place, the children may say which day the garbage truck comes. The remaining spaces are covered with cards in the order of the days of the week. The garbage truck is placed ready to depart on the large square.
Each child places an empty rubbish bin on the round blue space in front of his or her house. Each house starts with 2 bundles of waste paper, 2 bottles and 3 pieces of rubbish. The children may decide where they put these pieces. As they place them, they say: "We have the newspapers in the attic, I'll put the bottles behind the house, the rest of the rubbish is in the kitchen," and they choose the window or the spot behind the house in question and lay the rubbish pieces there. When everything has been distributed, the game can begin.
Rules of Play
Each child rolls the die in turn.
- Whoever rolls a rubbish bin takes one piece of household rubbish and throws it into the rubbish bin.
- Whoever rolls the bottle places one bottle on the "bottle space" in front of the house.
- Whoever rolls the symbol for a bundle of newspapers may place one of the newspaper bundles on the blue, square space in front of the house.
- The star means that one may put any piece of rubbish, bottles, newspapers or household rubbish of one's choice in front of the house.
- With "red" the garbage truck moves one space further (one day has passed).
Each fellow player may, if he or she wishes, give up a rolled symbol in favour of another player. For example, one may already have set out all of one's bottles in front of the house and roll the "bottle" symbol. One can then give this roll to another player who still has bottles in the house.
The children will pay most attention to the fellow player to whom the garbage truck comes first. After the seventh day, the garbage truck comes with the next "red" roll to the red dot in front of the first house. The rubbish pieces lying there in front of the house are removed, and the bin is emptied. As long as the garbage truck is still standing in front of the house, one may still take rubbish away from this house, but not once it has driven off.
Whenever "red" is rolled again, the garbage truck drives on and stops in front of the next house, and so on, until it has been at all 4 houses.
A player who has all of his or her rubbish in front of the house keeps rolling and offers the black symbols to the fellow players. "Red" has no effect for him or her.
End of the Game
If the garbage truck has driven away from a house and rubbish is still lying there, all the players have lost.
They have won if all the rubbish is sorted and standing in front of the houses before the garbage truck has been there or has driven away from there.
Playing Tactics
It is important that the children watch closely whether there is still something lying in the houses of the other players. It is sometimes advantageous to give away a roll, even if one could use it oneself, in order first to help the other player who still has so much, and above all the one to whom the garbage truck comes earlier.
Variant for Older Children
Play proceeds as described above, with the difference that household rubbish may be thrown into the rubbish bin only once all the bottles and all the newspapers are lying in front of the house, so that the rubbish is sorted.
Whoever rolls the rubbish bin symbol while still having bottles or newspapers in the house cannot use that roll, but may give it away and help others, provided that these others have also already set out their bottles and newspapers in front of the house.
