This set contains:

  • 5 bosses
  • 15 minibosses
  • 35 rooms
  • 9 spells
  • 32 coin tokens

Setup for 2–4 Players

To add the Vault of Villains to any base Boss Monster set, shuffle the minibosses and rooms into the room deck of the base set.

When playing with 2–4 players, set aside all cards bearing the explorer symbol. In the same way, shuffle the spells into the spell deck and the bosses into the boss deck.

Punch out the coin tokens and stack them in a place easily reachable by all players. Each player starts with 3 coins from the coin stack. Apart from this, setup is carried out as normal.

Setup for 5–6 Players

The Vault of Villains contains minibosses and rooms created EXCLUSIVELY for games that use Hard Landing, a mini-expansion for 5–6 players. When using Hard Landing, add ALL cards from that set that bear the explorer symbol, including the minibosses Negatron and Istota and the boss Ponurak. The special rules for 5–6 player games are described in detail in the rules insert for Boss Monster: Hard Landing.

Note: the minibosses Negatron and Istota and the boss Ponurak are named as printed in the Polish insert.

New Rules: Coin Rooms

Coins introduce a new mechanic that began in the set Boss Monster: Rise of the Minibosses. They represent the currency each boss uses to pay minions and to build new traps. Coins are marked with the coin symbol and with coin tokens.

Each boss starts the game with three coins in their hoard (the stack of coins kept beside the boss card). Coins are received at the moment the abilities of certain rooms are activated. Coins are also paid to promote minibosses (see the next section) or to strengthen the abilities of some rooms.

New Rules: Minibosses

You may add the rooms and minibosses from this set to any large Boss Monster set. Although miniboss cards are placed in the room deck, they are not treated as rooms. Instead, a miniboss strengthens the room it was built under, and can become even stronger through the promotion mechanic.

A. Miniboss symbol: this symbol shows that the card is a miniboss.

B. Level One: this power is always active.

C. Level Two: once per round, during the Build phase, you may pay a coin to promote one miniboss. Slide its card so that its Level Two power is revealed.

D. Level Three: you may pay a third coin to reveal this level. When this power is visible, you may activate it at any time, then reset the miniboss to Level One.

The example card shows Robobas, a miniboss. Its Level One power reads: "Monster rooms in your dungeon also count as trap rooms." Its Level Two power reads: "This room receives [treasure bag icon]." Its Level Three power reads: "All your trap rooms receive [+1 heart icon] until the end of the round. Reset Robobas to Level One."

During the Build phase you may build a miniboss instead of a room (example 1). Place its card face down on top of the room you want to modify, as if you were making a normal build. Miniboss cards can be built on any room, regardless of its treasure type. However, a miniboss cannot be built next to another miniboss. (They can be moved next to each other later by effects, or when a room is destroyed so that they end up side by side.)

When you reveal a miniboss, you must pay one coin, or it is discarded from the game. Then attach the miniboss card under the room, sliding it so that only its Level One power is visible (example 2). From then on, your room is treated as if it had that visible ability in addition to its other abilities. Unless stated otherwise, a miniboss's abilities are used at the same time as the abilities of rooms or spells.

During the Build phase you may also pay a coin to promote one of your minibosses. You may promote only a miniboss that has been in play for at least one round, and you may promote only one miniboss per round! When you do so, slide its card upward so that its next power is revealed. Note: you may promote one miniboss in the same round in which you built another.

Level One and Level Two powers remain active at all times while they are revealed. A Level Three power may be used immediately, at any time in any round after it has been revealed. However, using a Level Three power resets that miniboss to Level One. Don't worry: you may promote it again in the next Build phase!

If the stack of rooms holding a miniboss is completely destroyed, discard the miniboss. However, if there was another room beneath the destroyed room, your miniboss stays attached to the newly revealed room.

Examples

Example 1: during the Build phase, you may build a miniboss instead of a room. Place its card face down on top of the room you want to modify, as in a normal build.

Example 2: pay one coin to reveal the miniboss at the same moment the room cards are revealed. From then on, the Level One ability of the miniboss begins to work.

Example 3: during the Build phase you may pay one coin to promote one of your minibosses. Only one per round! When you do so, slide its card upward so that its next power is revealed. Level One and Level Two powers remain active while they are revealed. Using a Level Three power resets the miniboss to Level One; you may promote it again in the next round.

The example cards on the insert show the Robobas miniboss built on a trap room called Krypta widm (Crypt of Phantoms). The printed text of Krypta widm reads: "You may discard this card from your hand to force your opponent to give you a spell card."
