Components
- 10 bookshelf cards
- 29 book meeples: 6 blue, 6 green, 6 red, 5 purple, 3 pink, 3 yellow
- 1 cat meeple
Getting Ready
Remove the cards from the tin and set aside the double-sided starter card (marked with a star). Shuffle the rest and make a face-down deck next to the play area.
Choose either the easy (3 Xs) or hard (2 Xs) side of the starter card, and place that side face up in the middle of the play area.
The top left corner of the starter card tells you how many red books to remove from the tin and place upright on the Xs.
Finally, remove the cat from the tin and place it atop the starter card. You're ready to play!
Winning the Game
Bookshelf is a cooperative game. If your bookshelf reaches a height of eight cards and doesn't fall, you all win!
Taking a Turn
1) Draw 2 Cards, Choose 1
Draw two cards from the top of the deck and turn them face up, so all players can see. Choose one card to add to the top of the bookshelf, and put the other on the bottom of the deck.
Find the books that match your chosen card (shown in the top left corner) and remove them from the tin.
Finally, place your chosen card on top of the bookshelf, aligned with the previous card (you may rotate the card 180°).
2) Place the Books
Working together with another player, simultaneously place the books you set aside on top of the bookshelf. Each X on the top card must be covered by at least one book (books placed on Xs don't need to be the same colour). Don't let go of the books until you're sure they're balanced!
Picking Players
Each player should have an equal opportunity to place books onto the bookshelf. Consider always placing with the player opposite you, to your left/right, or pick other players at random.
3) Place the Cat
Remove the cat from its current shelf and move it up one shelf, taking care not to unbalance the bookshelf in the process!
Hint: The cat can overhang.
Playing Alone?
Books don't need to be placed simultaneously.
4) Repeat!
Repeat steps 1-3 until your bookshelf is 8 cards tall or topples over!
End Game
As soon as you add an eighth card (including the starter card) to the bookshelf, you win! If your bookshelf topples before you manage to place your eighth card, try again and see if you can do better next time.
If you want an easier challenge, play to six cards. If you want a harder challenge, play to ten cards.
