Concept

Beans love soccer too. Garden Beans, Barf Beans, Sow Beans, Coffee Beans, and Fire Beans throw themselves into soccer uniforms, and soon their jerseys show them to be proper players.

Each player takes a team's cards. The (bean) team that scores the most goals wins the game, just as in actual soccer.

Note: So that no one gets confused reading the rules of this game, the term "player" always refers to the players of the game; the participants in the game will be called "footballers" or simply "beans".

The game is for 2 or 4 persons. In the following, the rules for 2 players are described.

The Team Cards

There are two teams: National (blue backs) and International (yellow back). Five different types of beans belong to each team. Each type of bean has its own border color. For example, the Sow Beans all have yellow borders. The same bean type looks different for each team.

There are six different Team Cards:

The six Team Cards are the following. The source's layout does not label which team each of the six Team Card types belongs to; they are transcribed as printed.

  • A bean dribbles. In this case, it's a Barf Bean.
  • A bean passes to another bean; for example, a Barf Bean passes to a Garden Bean.
  • A bean crosses to another bean; for example, a Barf Bean crosses to a Fire Bean.
  • A bean shoots on goal; in this case, a Fire Bean.
  • A bean takes a long shot on goal; for example, a Barf Bean.
  • A bean takes a header on goal. This card can only be played if this bean has been the recipient of a cross.

Defensive Cards

All defensive cards have red backs. Referee cards bring "Free Kick", "Penalty Kick", and "Striker Foul" into the game. Tackle cards allow the defending player to take the ball from a specific bean type. Goalkeeper cards allow the defending player to block a shot on goal.

Overview Cards and Outcome Card

Each team has an Overview card, which shows the allowed passes between bean types. The Outcome card shows the playing field.

Preparation

Cards should be separated according to backs. The Outcome card is placed in the middle of the table; the Defensive cards should be shuffled and placed in a face-down stack beside it.

Each player takes the cards for a specific team along with the Overview card, which should be placed nearby. Each player should shuffle her team's cards and place them in a face-down stack; then each player should take six cards from her stack into her hand. Each player then takes three cards from the Defensive Card stack into her hand. If Referee cards are drawn during this setup, they should be discarded and replaced. Players should decide who begins as the first attacker and who is the first defender.

Game Play

The players take turns as attacker and defender. The attacker plays with her six Team cards; the defender with his three Defensive cards. The attacker begins by playing one Team card on the table, and then drawing a new Team card from the stack. If a player forgets to draw a replacement, she draws when she notices it.

Note: The first attack card may not show a goal. If the attacker has no cards without a goal, she must trade cards by discarding one at a time to the discard pile and drawing a replacement until she has a card without a goal. However, the opposing player now becomes the attacker.

The defender can respond to an attacker's card in three ways:

  • The defender says, "continue," and the attacker plays another Team card.
  • The defender swaps Defensive cards by putting 1-3 of his Defensive cards on the discard pile in the middle of the table, and drawing the same number of replacements. The attacker may then continue, unless the defender drew a Referee card; see "Referee cards").
  • The defender plays a permitted "Tackle" card and draws a replacement Defensive card. He is now the attacker unless he has drawn a Referee card; see "Tackle").

If the attacker is still on the attack, she may continue by playing a legal card.

Which Team Cards Are Legal?

It is important to note which bean currently has the ball. For example, if the purple Fire Bean has passed the ball to the blue Barf Bean, then the cards "Barf Bean Dribbles", "Barf Bean Passes to [bean X]", and "Barf Bean shoots on goal" are allowed.

Green Garden Beans and brown Coffee Beans, as outside forwards, can cross the ball to center. Crosses are always kicked to Fire Beans. Then the cards "Fire Bean shoots on goal" and "Fire Bean takes a header on goal" are allowed. Headers have a better chance at a goal.

Note: If the card "[Bean X] passes to Fire Bean" is played, "Fire Bean takes a header on goal" is not allowed, as there was no cross played before it.

Note: If the card "[Bean X] dribbles" is played at the beginning of an attack, the same bean may not immediately thereafter take a shot on goal with the second card.

An attack consists of at least two separate cards, but there is otherwise no limit (except as noted above). An attack can end in three ways:

  • With a shot on goal (see "Shot Blocked" and "Gooooal")
  • If the ball is stolen or there is a foul (see "Tackle" and "Striker Foul")
  • If a bad pass is made (see "Bad Passes").

The opposing player then becomes the attacker, and the attacker now becomes defender.

Shot Blocked!

The attacker's objective is to score a goal. She can score a goal by playing a Team card with a goal, or when the defender commits a foul. (See "Free kick/Penalty kick").

The defender can react two ways to a Team card with a goal on it:

  • The defender says "continue", and the attacker declares which corner is the target: upper left, upper right, lower left or lower right.
  • The defender plays a suitable "Tackle" card and draws a new Defensive card for his hand. The defender now becomes the attacker, unless he has drawn a Referee card (see "Tackle").

If the attacker shoots on goal, the defender can stop the ball with a suitable Goalie card from his hand. Suitable means: a Goalie card with the symbol corresponding to the type of shot being made: long shot, shot, header, or penalty kick.

In addition, each Goalie card has a small picture of a ball in one or more corners. Many cards have one, some have two, and there is one card with four balls depicted.

If the attacker, for example, shoots at the upper left corner of the goal and the defender has a Goalie card with the correct symbol for the shot type and a picture showing the upper left corner, the shot is blocked. The defender draws a new Defensive card after playing this card; if a Referee card is drawn at this time, it is discarded and another card is drawn in its place (until a non-Referee card is drawn; thus, the defender should wind up with three non-Referee cards in his hand afterward).

After a failed shot, the attacker discards her played Team cards. The defender and attacker now switch roles.

Gooooal!

A shot counts as a goal when the defender has no card to block the shot, or he has such a card but it does not have the ball in the corner that the attacker has chosen as her target.

After a successful goal, the attacker discards the Team cards used in the attack. The bean that scored the goal, however, should be placed half under the Outcome card to indicate the game score. The defender then begins a new attack, with the former attacker as defender.

(The source prints the score "1:2" as a figure at this point.)

Tackle

On the "Tackle" cards there are always two footballers of the same bean type depicted. One belongs to the National team, the other to the International team. If the attacker, for instance, plays a brown Coffee Bean card, the defender can play only the "Tackle" card having brown Coffee Beans. Even during a shot on the goal, the ball can be taken from a bean. The defender puts the "Tackle" card on the discard pile in the middle of the table, and draws a new Defensive card to replace it. The defender and attacker then switch roles.

Note: If the replacement Defensive card is a Referee card, the defender has committed a foul, and the attacker gets a free kick or penalty kick as appropriate. If it is a "Striker Foul", the Referee card is discarded without effect.

Referee Cards

The defender should exchange Defensive cards frequently in order to get better ones into his hand. He can do this whenever the attacker plays a bean card that does not take a shot on goal. If the Defensive card stack is empty, shuffle the discards to form a new stack.

Referee cards only take effect during a card swap or during a tackle. If the defender draws one or more Referee cards from the stack, he must place them in the discard pile and draw replacements until he has three Defensive cards in hand. Further Referee cards are discarded with no effect.

The Assistant Ref Decides

Since the defender is allowed to swap all three Defensive cards at once, it's possible that he draws several different Referee cards to replace them. Then the Referee consults with his Assistant Ref. For this game, that means that the defender shuffles the drawn Defensive cards and allows the opponent to select one randomly. The chosen card is the only one that takes effect.

Free Kick

The attacker can attempt a free kick with the last-played bean. The attacker declares one corner of the goal, with the "long shot" symbol being the one the defender has to match.

Note: The attacker can declare "Advantage" and continue playing without taking the Free Kick. Play continues as before with the same player as attacker.

Penalty Kick [11 meters]

The attacker can take a penalty kick with the last-played bean. The attacker declares one corner of the goal. The defender can only block the shot with a Goalie card showing the "11" symbol.

Striker Foul

The attacker has committed a foul. This immediately causes attacker and defender to switch roles. This can only happen when the defender swaps cards.

Missed Pass

If the attacker has begun an attack and cannot make a legal pass, she has passed the ball out of bounds. All Team cards that have been played are discarded. The defender becomes the new attacker.

Note: Page 2 of the source refers to a "Bad Passes" heading ("If a bad pass is made (see 'Bad Passes')"); the section in the source is printed as "Missed Pass", and it is transcribed here under that printed heading.

Game End

The first player to exhaust her Team deck shuffles her discards to make a new deck. When the second player finally exhausts his team deck, he no longer may shuffle his discards to make a new deck. He finishes his current attack, up through the shot on goal, which the defender has a chance to block. Then the game ends. The team that shot more goals wins. In the event of a tie, the game ends undecided.

For Four Players

Referee and Tackle cards are removed from the game. Players play in partnerships, teammates sitting opposite one another. Each player receives a hand of 6 Team cards and 3 Defensive cards. Each team has a common Team stack and attacks and defends together. Players play in clockwise order.
