Idea

Each player trades beans, which she grows in her fields, and then hopes to sell them profitably. The more beans of the same variety a player has in a field, the higher the profit from selling the bean harvest. Unfortunately, a player is often forced to harvest beans early, having to sell them at lower prices. In fact, sometimes a harvest brings no profit. Try to be the bean merchant to earn the most money.

Game Material

108 bean cards:

  • 20 Blue Beans (Blaue Bohne)
  • 18 Fire Beans (Feuerbohne)
  • 16 Broad Beans (Saubohne)
  • 14 Barf Beans (Brechbohne)
  • 12 Soy Beans (Sojabohne)
  • 10 Eye Beans (Augenbohne)
  • 8 Red Beans (Rote Bohne)
  • 6 Garden Beans (Gartenbohne)
  • 4 Stink Beans (Stinkbohne)

The Bean Cards

Frequency of the bean card in the game: There are nine different varieties of beans. Each variety is different in how often it will appear in the game. How many cards there are of a variety is depicted in a large number on the face of each card.

At the bottom of each bean card is the Beanometer. It shows how many coins you get for selling your beans. The numbers indicate the number of bean cards of the same variety you have to sell in order to get one, two, three, or four coins.

The broad bean says: ...mmm yummy

Broad bean Beanometer:

Income in coins1234
Total number of bean cards in the harvest of that type of bean3578

Example 1: For harvesting one or two broad beans, you get no coins; three or four broad beans get you 1 coin; five or six broad beans earn two coins; seven broad beans earn you three coins; and for eight or more broad beans, you receive four coins.

The Bean Coins

Selling your bean harvest will get you coins, by turning over some cards from the harvest. Each [face-down] card in your earnings is worth 1 coin.

A flipped bean card = 1 coin.

The Bean Fields

Each player has three bean fields. That means you will build up as many as three columns of cards in front of you. Each column is a "bean field". Any number of beans may be on a single bean field, but each field can only contain at most one type of bean at a time.

The Game

Shuffle the bean cards well. Deal each player five cards for her starting hand.

The Bohnanza rule: You are never allowed to change the order of the cards in your hand during the game. Unlike other card games, you may not sort your cards.

This means that for dealing bean cards: A new card always goes behind the old card(s). Once everyone gets their hand of five cards, draw three cards from the deck and lay them out in the middle of the table face-up. This is the bean market. Set the remaining bean cards on the table, face-down (coin-side-up) to be the draw deck. The player left of the dealer starts.

The soy bean says: It's showtime!

Table layout: discard pile (empty space) · draw deck (face-down stack) · bean market (three face-up cards).

Play

When it is your turn, you are the "active player", and you do all of the following three phases:

  1. Plant bean cards
  2. Trade bean cards
  3. Draw bean cards

1. Plant bean cards

First, you must plant the first bean card from your hand (i.e. the frontmost card, which you can see entirely), which means you place it face-up on one of your three bean fields. You start or continue a column of cards of that type of bean. After that, you may plant a second bean — the one that is now the foremost card in your hand.

You may not plant any more beans during this phase.

The blue bean says: Hey, keep it up! There are tons of coins to be had.

If you do not have any cards in your hand, just skip planting.

2. Trade bean cards

Now that you have planted bean cards from your hand, it is time to trade with the other players. Each player can choose whether to make any deals with you.

Note the following:

  • You may offer to trade some of your hand cards and/or the cards of the bean market.
  • The other players may only offer cards from their hand.
  • A trade involves trading one card for another card. A player can also offer several cards in exchange for one.
  • Hand cards may also be given away; however, no one is required to accept a gift.

Even when trading, you may not alter the order of the cards in your hand; however, you can offer any card, no matter where it is in your hand. Only remove the cards from your hand after a deal is agreed upon, never before.

You must plant any beans you receive in trade, or as gifts. You also plant any beans you want from the bean market. You do not put them in your hand, and you may not re-trade or re-gift them.

The order in which you plant the beans in your fields is up to you. You can harvest your fields between planting individual beans (see Harvesting beans).

Example 2: The bean market contains a stink bean, a garden bean, and a soy bean. Uwe wants the garden bean and the stink bean for himself, and offers the other players the soybean. He asks: "Anyone want a soy bean? I'd love to get a red bean." When he gets no takers, he amends the offer: "OK, I'd give the soy bean from the market, as well as a blue bean out of my hand, all for a single red bean."

Volker is enticed. Uwe gives him the soy bean from the market and a blue bean from his hand, and Volker gives Uwe a red bean. Volker plants the two beans on his fields. Uwe takes the garden bean and stink bean from the market, as well as the red bean from the trade, and plants the beans on his three fields.

The stink bean says: Why won't anyone trade with me?

When you are done trading, and want to entertain no more offers from the other players, you declare the trading done for your turn.

3. Draw bean cards

Now that you have finished trading, you draw three cards from the deck, one at a time. Each card you draw goes behind all your other cards. Next, if there are fewer than three cards in the bean market, add cards to it from the draw deck until there are three beans in the market. Now your turn is done, and the next player in clockwise order executes these same three phases.

Draw pile is empty

If the draw deck becomes empty during the course of the game, shuffle the discard pile and place it face-down as the new draw deck.

Harvesting beans

You may harvest one of your bean fields at any time, even when it is not your turn. You may even harvest more than one field at a time.

When you harvest a field, you must remove all the beans from that field. The Beanometer on the card shows how many coins you will receive for these beans. Flip over and keep the appropriate number of bean cards as coins, and set them in a pile in front of you. The other beans from the harvest go face-up on the discard pile.

Example 3: Three fire beans earns one coin. Marc flips over one of the three fire bean cards and keeps it as a coin. He puts the other two fire bean cards face-up on the discard pile.

In some cases, you may receive no coins from the sale of beans.

Example 4: Selling a harvest of two fire beans earns you no coins.

Game End

When the draw deck is exhausted for the second time, the game ends immediately. Each player can still harvest and sell her bean fields. Cards in your hand are worthless. Whoever has the most coins wins.

The fire bean says: You get it? The garden bean says: Yeah, like I've won!
