Quick Start: Playing with the Emissaries
As a quick start, agree to play with the emissaries. The sole function of the emissaries is to add new cards to your preassembled deck.
You and your opponent both select one preassembled people deck, adding the corresponding Chosen Ones and additional people cards available from the new Emissaries & Inquisitors sets. If you have only one of the two Emissaries & Inquisitors sets, each people deck receives one or two new cards; if both sets are available each people deck receives three new cards.
Next, you and your opponent each select one of the emissaries and add the listed seven cards to your preassembled decks. With both Emissaries & Inquisitors sets available, each deck should contain exactly 40 cards with the respective leader and emissary cards on the side.
Deck Building: Playing with the Inquisitors
If you want to build your own decks, agree to play with the inquisitors.
Then you and your opponent both prepare one or more decks for play. For each deck, you select an inquisitor along with your leader. The leader's deck building rules are modified by the rules listed on the selected inquisitor card. Below is a review of the basic deck building rules.
- Each deck must contain the number of cards shown on the leader and inquisitor (the leader and inquisitor cards are not considered part of this total).
- Only one copy of any card may be in a deck.
- Any number of cards of the leader's people may be included in the deck (a card's people is identified by the people name before the identification number).
- A number of cards not of the leader's people may be included as well; the total number of moons on these cards may not exceed the number of moons shown on the leader and inquisitor.
When you begin to play, both players simultaneously reveal the leader and inquisitor for the deck they wish to use. Each player staggers his leader card partially on top of his inquisitor card and displays both next to the game board where indicated. Play then progresses according to the rules described in the base game.
If you play more than one game, agree up front whether to stay with the same deck throughout or whether you will start each new game by selecting one of your prepared decks in the above way. When playing multiple games, the first player to gain at least five crystals is the final victor.
Crystal Cards
The crystal cards only appear in the second set of the Emissaries & Inquisitors. You may play one crystal card from your hand during your leadership phase instead of a leadership card. However, you may only play a crystal card if the indicated color dragon is on your side. When played, display your crystal card face up next to your inquisitor/leader/leadership cards to mark your achievement. If you play a crystal card while your opponent has a crystal card displayed, you and your opponent each immediately discard one displayed crystal card, placing them face up on your discard piles. Only one player may have crystal cards displayed at any point in time. These cards remain active as long as they are displayed.
At the end of the game, the displayed crystal cards influence the scoring: If the winner of the fight has crystal cards displayed, he scores one additional crystal for each of these cards. If the loser of the game has crystal cards displayed, then the winner scores one dragon fewer for each of these cards, down to a minimum of zero dragons – but the winner always scores one crystal for winning the game and the loser never scores crystals.
Example: A player wins the game with one dragon on his side, his opponent has two displayed crystal cards. The winner scores one crystal. With the crystal cards, a player can now reach the required total of five or more crystals in a single game to become the overall victor.
Leadership Phase Cards and the REPLACE Icon
As explained above, you may play either one leadership card, one Hyla card or one crystal card in your Leadership phase. These cards are therefore called "Leadership phase cards". There is one other option of play during your Leadership phase: Instead of playing a Leadership phase card, you may play one card depicting the REPLACE icon from your hand into your discard pile without effect, and you may then draw a replacement card from your draw deck.
Note: Only the leadership cards are discarded face up in a separate stack, partially overlapping the leader card; all other cards are discarded face up on the discard pile.
Chosen Ones
The Chosen Ones are leadership cards that affect both players. When you play a Chosen One, your opponent always implements the effects first.
Special Rule Cards reading "I must..." take precedence over all other instructions on the cards, including cards that "ignore" instructions and cards reading "you may not...".
