Components
The Hunter's Nightmare contains:
- 38 Upgrade cards
- 12 Rune cards
- 17 Monster cards
- 8 Main Boss cards
- 8 Boss cards
- 15 Death tokens
Transcriber's note: the booklet shows the card images but prints the text of only a few of them (the Hunter and Beast Runes, and the Boss Lorann's Silver Beast, which appears in the Death Tokens section). The text of the other new cards is not in the booklet and is not transcribed here; it is printed on the cards themselves.
New Main Bosses
The Hunter's Nightmare adds 8 new Main Bosses to the game, giving players more choice during game setup.
New Monster, Boss and Upgrade Cards
The new Upgrade, Monster and Boss cards add variety to the game. To use them, simply shuffle them into the corresponding decks from the base game (the Upgrade deck and the Chalice Dungeon deck).
Runes
Master Rune-Carver Carrill, a student at Byrgenwerth, deciphered the inhuman sounds of the Great Ones and created what is now called Carrill's Runes. By carving these Runes, the Hunters gain incredible power.
Setup: After choosing the Main Boss, each Hunter draws 2 random Rune cards. After looking at both, the Hunter discards one of them and places the other face up next to their Hunter Board. Each Rune gives its owner a unique ability. The effect printed on the Rune card is always in effect.
Tip: When choosing a Rune, pay attention to the Main Boss's effect, because it can affect how useful a Rune is. Some Runes work more effectively with a certain number of players.
Rune Cards
The Hunter's Nightmare Rune cards include the following (the booklet prints the text of these two cards; the text of the other Rune cards is not printed in the booklet):
- Hunter Rune: When you play a Weapon, bank half of your accumulated (not yet banked) Blood Echoes, rounding down.
- Beast Rune: When you use a Melee Weapon, deal 2 more damage to Monsters, but take 1 more damage from Monster attacks.
Translator's notes: "Сохраните" on the Hunter Rune is rendered as "bank" to match the base game's term for securing Blood Echoes in the Hunter's Dream. The opening word "When" of the Beast Rune is partly hidden behind the Hunter Rune card in the booklet image and is recovered from the booklet's text layer.
Death Tokens
In The Hunter's Nightmare, death brings new hardships by reducing the number of Trophy tokens a Hunter can earn.
Setup: During setup, along with the normal Trophy tokens, the Hunters take 3 different Death tokens (one each of Kin, Humanoid and Beast) and place them on their Hunter Board to the right of the "8" value.
Death from Monsters: Each time a Monster kills a Hunter, that Hunter moves all Death tokens matching the type of that Monster one space to the left (starting from the "8" value).
Death from Hunters: Each time a Hunter kills another Hunter, the slain Hunter moves one of its Death tokens of any type one space to the left.
Blocked spaces: Spaces occupied by Death tokens, and all spaces to the right of them, become unavailable until the end of the game. If you must move a Death token but a Trophy token is on the space you are moving to, move that Trophy token to the left to make room for the Death token.
Clarifications
Order of Effects That Modify Damage
- Doubling and halving damage.
- Simple increase or prevention of damage.
- Limiting the amount of damage received.
Killing Blow
Some effects refer to the Hunter who dealt the killing blow to a Monster. That Hunter is the one who removed the last Blood Echo from the Monster card.
Gatling Gun and Rattling Hammer
The instant effect of the Gatling Gun deals 3 damage to everyone who uses the Rattling Hammer.
Logarius' Wheel
During the Transform Weapons step, the players who played Logarius' Wheel decide, in turn order, whether they will transform their weapon. Then the Hunters who decided to transform their weapon reveal their cards at the same time as those who played Transform.
