  • 1 Forgotten Evocation Card: add this card to the Evocation Card deck of the core game.
  • 1 Forgotten Spell Card: add this card to the Forgotten Spell deck of the core game.

Gaea (Legend — Forgotten) has Speed 2, Strength 1 and Health 6. Its card text reads: "After she have performed a [action symbol], choose an Effect: Remove 2 of your Instability in a Room. If you do, gain 2 Power Points. Convert 3 Damage on a Model from her. Convert 3 Instability in a Room from her."

The Forgotten Spell card Nature's Fury is removed from the Forgotten Spells deck during Gaea's Setup (see "Gaea Setup" above). Its card text is printed on the card.

Avatar

Avatar Card Anatomy

The Gaea Avatar Card shows Health 12, Strength 1 and Speed 2. Its parts are:

  • (A) Avatar Effect: the Effect indicated by the Avatar Effect symbol on the Avatar Card must be resolved whenever the Effect of a Command Card shows the Avatar Effect symbol.
  • (B) Avatar Tool: the Avatar uses a Tool, which is indicated in the Effects with the Tool symbol. Gaea's Tool is the Root Token.
  • (C) Avatar Skills: Gaea has the Avatar Skills explained in detail on page 10 of the PDF (see "Avatar Skills — Gaea" below).

The Avatar Card text reads: "Places 1 Instability in a Room from the target. Moves up to 1 Instability from each Room, from 1 Root Token onto that Root Token. If in the Lodge there are at least 3 Root Tokens with 2 Instability: removes 3 of those and places an Arbor Vitae in the Lodge." Its two Priority lines are described under "Avatar Skills — Gaea" below.

Gaea Setup

Apply the following steps during Step 3 of the Avatar Setup:

  • Place the Gaea Model in the Black Rose Room.
  • Place the Filius Token in the Throne Room.
  • Place the Filius Evocation Card in the Servant slot of the Avatar Board.
  • Place a Root Token in each Room.
  • Remove the Nature's Fury card from the Forgotten Spells deck.

Avatar Special Rules — Gaea

Root Tokens

Some Effects related to Gaea place a Root Token in a Room. A Room may contain a single Root Token. If an Effect indicates to place a Root Token in a Room that already contains one, or indicates to place one but no Root Tokens are present in the game pool, do not place any tokens.

Root Tokens follow these rules:

  • Placement: when a Root Token is placed in a Room, it must be placed to the left of the Instability Slots, adding two Instability Slots to the Room. It is possible to place a Root Token in a Rebuilt Room.
  • Instability: when Instability is placed in a Room where a Root Token is, the Instability must first be placed on the Root Token's Instability Slots, if available. The Instability on the Root Token is considered to be placed in the Room where the token is. If the Root Token is in a Rebuilt Room, only the Black Rose can place Instability on it.
  • Destruction: a Root Token is considered as a Model. It can be targeted like a normal Model and suffers Effects that target the Room in which it is. A Root Token that suffers an Effect completely ignores it unless it inflicts at least 2 Damage to it, in which case the Root Token is removed from the Lodge and each Instability on it returns to its owner's pool.
  • Rebuilding: when a Room containing a Root Token is rebuilt, the Token is removed.

Arbor Vitae

Arbor Vitae Tokens represent the consolidation of Gaea's power in the Lodge and are taken into account by the Effects related to Gaea.

Avatar Skills — Gaea

Blossoming Burst

At the beginning of the Clean-up Phase (before resolving Step 1 of the Phase) the Avatar gains 1 Power Point for each Arbor Vitae Token and for each Root Token in the Lodge with both Instability Slots occupied. Then, if there are at least three Arbor Vitae Tokens in the Lodge, the Avatar immediately wins the game.

Dominion

If Gaea has to activate when she is in a Cell, she does not activate and places herself in the Black Rose Room.

Gaea Priority

Gaea has two Priority lines, marked 1 and 2 on the Avatar Card.

Priority 1: Area, −Root Token, +Instability, +Models.

Gaea chooses as a target:

  • −Root Token: the Room with no Root Token, if tied...
  • +Instability: the Room with the most Instability, if tied...
  • +Models: the Room with the most Models, if tied, the Choice of the Crown applies.

Priority 2: Area, −Root Token, +Instability, −Models.

Gaea chooses as a target:

  • −Root Token: the Room with no Root Token, if tied...
  • +Instability: the Room with the most Instability, if tied...
  • −Models: the Room with the least Models, if tied, the Choice of the Crown applies.

Servant — Filius

A Servant is an Evocation that has a special bond with the Avatar. Filius is the Servant of Gaea and is represented in the Lodge by the Filius Token (which counts as if it was a regular Evocation Model) and its own Servant Evocation Card. The Servant Evocation Card is never discarded from the Servant slot of the Avatar Board, even if Filius is defeated or removed.

The Filius Evocation Card shows Speed 2, Strength 2 and Health 3.

Special Rules

Priority: when activated, Filius follows the Priority on its Servant Evocation Card (also see box) to choose a target, move closer to it and attack it.

Settle: when Filius is defeated, it places 1 Instability in a Room from the Room in which it was defeated.

Comeback: if Filius has to activate when its Model is not in the Lodge (it was previously defeated or removed), Filius does not activate, and the Avatar places its Model in the Throne Room.

Filius Priority

Priority: Mage Model, +Power Points, +Damage, −Area, +Trophies.

Filius chooses as a target:

  • +Power Points: the Mage with the most Power Points, if tied...
  • +Damage: the Mage with the most Damage, if tied...
  • −Area: the closest Mage, if tied...
  • +Trophies: the Mage with the most Trophy Tokens, if tied, the Choice of the Crown applies.

If Filius cannot reach its target, it moves as close to it as possible. If there are no Mages in the Lodge when Filius activates, it does not move and ends its activation.

Filius Model

Gaea's Servant, Filius, is a faun of the Primaevi people, who appear in the game Nova Aetas Renaissance. If you have a copy of the game, you can replace the Filius Token with the Model of any faun.

Paths

The rules introduced in this chapter allow the use of Paths, a new way Mages can gain Power Points. Once the regular game Setup is completed, Paths can be inserted into any Black Rose Wars: Rebirth game as an additional module by following these steps:

  • Create a Path Deck with all the Path Cards available, making sure not to mix Path Start Cards into it.
  • Place the Path Deck next to the Quests Deck.
  • Assign each Mage a Path Start Card. That Mage places it in front of them and places one of their Path markers on the Path Start symbol.
  • Starting with the Mage who has the Crown and proceeding clockwise, each Mage draws three Path Cards from the Path Deck, chooses one and places it to the right of their Path Start Card so that it is adjacent to it and so that the Tracks B on the two cards match; they then shuffle and place the cards not chosen at the bottom of the Path Deck.

Path Start Card Anatomy

  • (A) Path Start
  • (B) Track
  • (C) Advance Condition

The Path Start Card carries the text "You gain 1 Power Point" at its top.

Path Card Anatomy

  • (B) Track
  • (C) Advance Condition
  • (D) End Point
  • (E) Effect
  • (F) Empty Passage
  • (G) Effect Passage
  • (H) Penalty Box
  • (I) Points Box

Using Paths

During the game, a Mage must try to meet the Advance Condition (C) of the Path Card or Path Start Card, on which their Path marker is. Whenever they succeed, the Mage can move their Path marker onto one of the next Passages connected (with a continuous Track (B)) to the one from which the Path marker starts.

The Mage's goal is to advance their Path marker as far as possible, moving on to the next Path Card until they reach an End Point (D) (see next page).

Gaining a Path Card

A Mage can gain a new Path Card in two ways:

  • Advance: whenever a Mage moves their Path marker onto the Passage of a different card than the one they started from and that is not an End Point (D), that Mage draws three Path Cards from the Path Deck, chooses one and places it to the right of their last Path Card so that it is adjacent to it and the Tracks of the two cards match; they then shuffle and place the cards not chosen at the bottom of the Path Deck.
  • Quests: whenever a Mage would draw a Quest Card they can instead draw three Path Cards from the Path Deck, choose one and place it to the right of their last Path Card (or Path Start Card) so that it is adjacent to it and the Tracks of the two cards match; they then shuffle and place the cards not chosen at the bottom of the Path Deck.

Example: A Mage Gains a New Path Card

  • Advance: the Path marker is moved to the Passage of a Path Card different from the one from which it started.
  • Quests: the Mage would draw a Quest Card. Instead, the Mage draws three Path Cards, chooses one and places it to the right of their rightmost Path Card.

Reaching an Effect Passage

When a Mage moves their Path marker onto an Effect Passage (G), they can resolve the Effect (E) of the Passage Card on which their Path marker is. These Effects are treated as if they were generated by a triggered Trap (Spell) which uses the rules indicated on page 18 of the core game manual.

Reaching an End Point

When the Path marker of a Mage reaches an End Point (D) they gain a Complete Path and the Avatar gains the Power Points indicated in the Effect next to the End Point.

For the remainder of the game, the Mage can no longer meet the Advance Condition (C) of the Path Card on which their Path marker is and cannot gain any new Path Cards. That Mage must then wait until the End of the Game to calculate the Power Points gained thanks to their Path Cards.

End of the Game — Additional

During the end of game calculations, Mages gain additional Power Points from Path Cards as described below:

  • The Mage has a Complete Path: the Mage gains the sum of the Power Points indicated on the Points Box (I) of the Path Card with their Model and all the Path Cards to the left of it.
  • The Mage does not have a Complete Path: the Mage loses the sum of the Power Points indicated on the Penalty Box (H) of all their Path Cards.

The PDF gives two worked examples. A Complete Path is shown as "Complete Path: +2 Power Points" and an Incomplete Path as "Incomplete Path: −6 Power Points".

Legendary Scenario: Stop the Threat

A Legendary Scenario is a special game that allows you to play an event from the world of Black Rose Wars: Rebirth by applying a specific set of new rules and using Legendary Scenario Cards dedicated to it.

In Stop the Threat, the Mages will have to stop the awakening of Gaea, progenitor of the titans, who is attempting to subdue the power of the Black Rose.

Additional Setup

Apply the following during the regular Game Setup:

  • Step 1, 2 and 3: instead of what is indicated in these points, arrange the Rooms and Cells as shown in the image in relation to the number of players participating in the game.
  • Before step 4: replace the Black Rose Room with the Emerald Rose Room. Replace the Forge, Garden and Treasure Room with the Thorny Clearing, Life Fountain and Indoor Forest Rooms.

Once the Setup is complete:

  1. Place the Second Moon Cube on Slot 5, the Third Moon Cube on Slot 21, and the Black Rose Cube on Slot 28 of the Power Board.
  2. Follow the steps of Gaea's Avatar Setup.
  3. Carry out the additional setup to include the Path Deck in the game.
  4. Place the Legendary Scenario Card Stop the Threat of the relevant Moon Phase on top of each of the three Event decks. These cards will be the first Event to be resolved in each of the Moon Phases.

Scenario Rules

The following rules apply while playing this Legendary Scenario:

  • False Idols: when a Mage defeats Gaea they do not gain an Avatar Trophy Token.
  • Toll: when a Mage removes a Root Token, they gain 1 Avatar Trophy Token.

Honorable Mention

At the end of the game, the Mage with the most Trophies gains 3 Power Points. If tied, no Mage gains additional Power Points.

Gaea Hunt Mission (Nova Aetas Renaissance)

How to Use This Expansion

This expansion adds a new Hunt Mission to be included in any Nova Aetas Renaissance Campaign of the Core Game or any Expansion.

If you decide to use Gaea in your Campaign, add the Event Card found in this box to the Core Game Event Card Deck.

Gaea is a Hunt Mission and follows all the rules for this type of Mission, described in the core Rulebook of Nova Aetas Renaissance.

Bounty

Instead of waiting to draw the Event Card "Weeds," at any point in the Main Campaign you can mark the title of this Side Mission in the Active Side Mission Slot and play it as if you had drawn the Event Card "Weeds."

Large Models

Some Models occupy more than a single Battlefield Square. These Models are called Large Models. These Models occupy only a single Square during movement. In other words, while moving, a Large Model is considered as a normal Model, and then returns to occupying more Squares the moment the movement ends. When players need to determine the movement of a Large Model, they choose any of the Squares occupied by the Model and count starting from the chosen Square (a normal-sized Model can be used to simulate the movement of the Large Model). When the Large Model finishes its movement, the players place the Model so that the Squares occupied include the Square where it finished its movement. If placement is not possible because the required Squares (usually 4) are not all available, players refer to the following rules:

  • If there are Models occupying the Squares, the Large Model pushes the Models occupying them into adjacent available Squares or the nearest available Square.
  • If there are Scenic Elements occupying Squares, place the Large Model in Squares that are available or occupied by other Models. If this is not possible, the Large Model ends its Movement in a Square that allows its placement.

Large Models and Area Effects

A Large Model is considered to be targeted by an Attack with the Area Trait if at least one of the Squares it occupies is within the Area of the Attack. If a Large Model is the target of an Attack with the Area Trait, it suffers only the Effect intended for the target, even if it occupies multiple Squares within the Area. If a Large Model is not the target of an Attack with the Area Trait and occupies more than one Square within the Area, it suffers the additional Effect only once.

Large Models and Line of Sight

A Large Model always has a valid Line of Sight on all other Models and vice versa.
