Ordeal Mode (Magazine Page 8)

Ordeal Cards represent specific tasks Mages must perform by the end of the game to prevent the Black Rose from gaining additional Power Points. Each Ordeal Card has two different tasks, each completed task will grant Power Points to both the Mage and the Black Rose, but if the Mage fails to perform any of his/her tasks, he/she will lose against the Black Rose.

The magazine's lead-in text above this box (on page 8, beside the Black Rose title art) is not legible in the photo and is not transcribed.

Rules

To use Ordeal Cards in a Black Rose Wars game, proceed as follows, referring to the game rulebook.

Setup, point 8 (page 16): Shuffle the Ordeal Card deck and give two of them per player.

Setup, point 10 (page 16): Each player selects one of the available Ordeal Cards and discards the other.

Point Count, after point 4 (page 35): Each player forms a deck with all the available Spell Cards (those currently on the Mage Card, the Grimoire, the Memories and the Hand), then reveals his/her Ordeal Card. Each player verifies if he/she has performed one or both of the tasks indicated on his/her Ordeal Card by checking the previously formed deck, the Activation Tokens and Trophies in his/her possession, and the Quests completed. In this phase the symbol counts as any symbol of the elements, and is considered as one of the elemental symbols required by the tasks.

Points

  • Each completed task grants the indicated Power Points to the Mage and the Black Rose.
  • If the Mage has not performed any task on his/her Ordeal Card, the Black Rose gains the Power Points indicated in its center. If the Mage has a number of Power Points equal to or greater than that of the Black Rose, his/her Power Point Counter is moved to the Power Board one point behind that of the Black Rose.

Ordeal Card Faces (Photo)

The photo shows the card faces below. Each card has a centre value, which is the Power Points the Black Rose gains when the Mage performs no task on that card (see Points above). Each card's text lines are listed top to bottom as printed. The photo does not show which lines belong to which of the card's two tasks, so the lines are not grouped into tasks here.

The small shield numbers in the corners of every card are not transcribed. They cannot be read reliably at this photo resolution, and the magazine text does not say which number belongs to which task.

The symbols in the lines are school, element or room symbols, shown as "[symbol]" here because the photo is too small to identify each one. The lines do not name them.

Card faces, in the order they appear in the photo (row by row, left to right):

Row 1

  1. "You have a Spell for each School (not Forgotten Spells)." Centre value: 5. "You have at least 5 [symbol] Spells." "You have at least 5 [symbol] Spells."
  2. "You have at least 7 [symbol] Spells." Centre value: 5. "You have at least 5 [symbol] Spells."
  3. "You have at least 7 [symbol] Spells." Centre value: 5. "You have at least 5 [symbol] Spells." (The photo is unclear whether the symbols here differ from card 2.)
  4. "You have completed a Quest for every Moon." Centre value: 4. "You have at least 6 [symbol] Spells."

Row 2

  1. "You have at least 2 Activation Tokens of the following Rooms," followed by three coloured room dots (blue, red, green). Centre value: 5. "You have at least 6 [symbol] Spells."
  2. "You have at least 2 Activation Tokens of the following Rooms," followed by three coloured room dots (grey, blue, yellow). Centre value: 5. "You have at least 6 [symbol] Spells."
  3. "You have at least 2 Activation Tokens of the following Rooms," followed by three coloured room dots (purple, red, grey). Centre value: 5. "You have at least 8 [lightning symbol] Spells."
  4. "You have at least 2 Activation Tokens of the following Rooms," followed by three coloured room dots (blue, red, yellow). Centre value: 5. "You have at least 6 [symbol] Spells."

Row 3

  1. "You have a Spell for each School (not Forgotten Spells)." Centre value: 5. "You have at least 5 [symbol] Spells." "You have at least 5 [symbol] Spells." (This face reads the same as card 1 in the photo. It is listed separately because it sits in its own grid position; see the note below.)
  2. "You have at least 1 Trophy Tokens." Centre value: 6. "You have at least 5 [flame symbol] Spells." "You have at least 5 [symbol] Spells."
  3. "You have at least 2 Activation Tokens of the following Rooms," followed by three coloured room dots (grey, yellow, purple; colours read at low resolution). Centre value: 5. "You have at least 6 [flame symbol] Spells."

Row 4

  1. "You have the Activation Token of the Room," followed by one black room dot. Centre value: 7. "You have a Forgotten Spell card in your Hand at the end of the game."
  2. "You have at least 2 Activation Tokens of the following Rooms," followed by three coloured room dots (grey, yellow, purple; colours read at low resolution). Centre value: 5. "You have at least 6 [flame symbol] Spells."
  3. "The other Mages have a maximum total of 3 of your Trophy Tokens." Centre value: 5. "You have at least 4 [shield symbol] Spells."

Not transcribed: the red card and the rose-back card visible at the right end of rows 3 and 4. They are not Ordeal card faces.

Notes on the Cards

  • Card count. The product is described as a 12-card promo. The photo shows 14 Ordeal card faces (4 in row 1, 4 in row 2, 3 in row 3, 3 in row 4). This file lists all 14 as they appear. The count cannot be reconciled from the photo, and page 9 would settle it. Cards 1 and 9 read identically; they are listed separately as shown and have not been merged.
  • Trophy spelling. The photo reads "Thropy Tokens" on cards 10 and 14. This file reads it as the base game's term "Trophy Tokens", which is a judgment call from a low-resolution photo. Check against the printed card when page 9 or a card scan is available.
  • Colours and icons. Room colours in the dots and the school, element and flame symbols are read at low resolution. Those marked as read at low resolution should be checked against page 9.
  • Terms used as defined in the base game. "Spells", "Forgotten Spells", "Forgotten Spell card", "Activation Tokens", "Trophy Tokens", "Quests", "Memories", "Grimoire", "Hand", "Mage Card", "Power Points", "Power Board" and "Black Rose" are used as defined in the Black Rose Wars base rules. This file does not restate them.

Missing: Magazine Page 9

Magazine page 9 is missing from every source found. The page 8 text says that page 9 holds "the entire set of rules and set-up" and the full set of Ordeal cards. Specifically missing:

  • The complete list of Ordeal cards, with each card's two tasks and its corner numbers.
  • The grouping of each card's text lines into its two tasks.
  • The meaning of the corner shield numbers, and which of them is the Mage's Power Points and which is the Black Rose's, if that is how they are used.
  • Any further rules on the set-up or the cards that page 9 contains.

These gaps are not filled from memory or from other products' rules. Where this file is incomplete, the Ordeal Mode rules on page 8 are the only printed rules transcribed.
