Overview

Familiars are special Evocations that can be used in two different ways, called Modes:

  1. Guard Mode: when a Familiar is in the same Room as its Mage.
  2. Hunting Mode: when a Familiar is in a different Room than its Mage.

Preparation

  1. Replace a Lodge Room with a Familiar Summon Room of the same color.
  2. Place the Familiar Evocation cards and Familiar Action tokens where all players can access them.

Summon a Familiar

A Familiar can be summoned through its Room using these rules in the following order:

  1. Availability: It is not possible to summon a new Familiar if they are not available in the reserve.
  2. Material: The Mage who summons a Familiar chooses one of those still available, and takes the Familiar's Card they prefer, placing it under the Mage sheet as usual, and its corresponding Action marker.
  3. Miniature: Place the Familiar miniature attached to the base of your Mage as a combined, unique model. A newly summoned Familiar is in Guard Mode.
  4. Limit: Each Mage can have a maximum of one Familiar at a time among his Evocations.

Familiar Card

A. Illustration and name of the Familiar with its Archetype.

B. Characteristics of the Familiar when it is in Hunting Mode (movement, damage, and any additional effects).

C. Space for the Familiar Action (Physical Action) that can be performed by the Mage when the Familiar is in Guard Mode. The Action marker is flipped each time it is used just like a normal Physical Action token.

D. Familiar Health with Wound slots.

Guard Mode

The Familiar is considered in Guard Mode if:

  • It has just been summoned.
  • At the end of its activation, the Familiar is in the same Room as its Mage.
  • At the end of an Action, the Mage is in the same Room as his Familiar.
  • If the Mage enters the Room where his Familiar is located during movement, the Mage can decide to immediately return it to Guard Mode and moves it with the Mage for the remainder of that movement. Alternatively, the Mage may leave the Familiar in that Room in Hunting Mode and continue movement without it.

A Familiar in Guard Mode is not considered a model in its own right but becomes a unique model with the Mage, both for movement and for resolving effects.

When the Familiar is in this mode, the Mage can, with one of his Actions, use the Familiar Action token to:

  • Activate the Familiar Action.
  • Turn the Familiar in a Hunting Mode and activate it immediately. In this case, if the Familiar is still in his Mage's Room after completing the Action, it will return to the Guard Mode.

Damage: In this Mode, the Familiar cannot be separately targeted. However, when the Mage suffers Damage, all damage may be distributed between the Mage and/or the Familiar, as desired.

Hunting Mode

The Familiar is considered in Hunting Mode if it is not in the same Room as its Mage.

In Hunting Mode, a Familiar is a normal Evocation and follows all the Evocations rules, except for Damage (see the box).

In the Evocations Phase, a Mage who has a Familiar in Guard Mode can, in his Turn, change the Familiar Mode and activate it immediately.

Damage: In this Mode, the Familiar suffers Damage and effects as a normal Evocation. Also, if the Mage suffers more Damage than can be endured while his Familiar is in a Hunting Mode, the Mage must assign the excess Damage to the Familiar even if the Familiar is in a different Room.

Defeat of the Familiar and its Mage

A Mage cannot be defeated as long as his Familiar is alive.

When a Mage who owns a Familiar is defeated, the Trophy goes to the opponent who inflicted the last hit, regardless of whether the target was the Mage or the Familiar; only the Damage on the Mage Sheet is calculated for the Points.

When a Familiar is defeated, it returns to the newly available supply, like a standard Evocation.

Important: if you use Familiars, you cannot use the optional Overkill rules.
