Playing Together (Miteinander spielen)
Build a large food web together. You collect points together. Can you manage to lay as many food arrows as possible?
Game Material
- 24 "Waldrand" (forest edge) cards (cards 1-24)
- 24 "Savanne" (savanna) cards (cards 26-49)
- 45 "Arrow" game pieces
Other game material is not needed here: 20 silver and 10 gold markers; 4 special cards (cards 25 and 50-52).
Setup
- Choose a card set: "Waldrand" or "Savanne". Shuffle the 24 cards and place them ready as a draw pile.
- Make space on the table for a 4x4 grid of 16 cards: four rows of four cards each. Keep the arrow game pieces ready within everyone's reach.
- Everyone draws 3 cards and lays them out face up in front of themselves.
- If you play with two players, each person draws four cards. If you play alone, you draw five cards. The number of open cards stays the same during the whole game.
- Turn over the top two cards of the draw pile. These are your start cards. Place them on any two spaces in the 4x4 grid.
- Important! The start cards must at the beginning be neither next to each other nor connected to each other.
How You Play
Whoever has the card with the highest number in front of them begins. After that you play on clockwise.
1. Lay a card. Lay one of your open cards into the grid. It must form at least one matching food relationship with at least one adjacent card.
- Important! One matching connection is enough.
- You can place your card above, below, left, right or diagonally (all eight neighbouring spaces).
2. Mark connections. The picture circles on each card show what the species eats and by whom it is eaten. Two cards match when one of the two species eats the other. Check all adjacent cards. For each matching connection, place an arrow game piece between the two cards. The arrow always points from the prey to the predator. In the example (Snail card): Knäuelgras (cock's-foot grass) -> Schnecke (snail) -> Igel (hedgehog).
(On the card: "Nahrung" = food, "Beute" = prey; "Fressfeind" = predator, "Räuber" = predator.)
3. Draw a card. If the draw pile still contains cards, draw a new card and lay it face up in front of you. After that you again have as many open cards as at the start of the game.
If No Card Fits
If none of your open cards fits, draw a card from the pile. Play it if it fits. Otherwise you put it under the pile and draw again.
End of the Game and Scoring
The game ends when all 16 spaces of the 4x4 grid are occupied. It also ends when nobody can lay a matching card any more. Then count all laid arrows. That is your score:
- 15-17: ökologisches Ungleichgewicht (ecological imbalance)
- 18-20: stabiles Biotop (stable biotope)
- 21-22: blühendes Ökosystem (flourishing ecosystem)
- 23+: Meister der Biosphäre (master of the biosphere)
Playing Against Each Other (Gegeneinander spielen)
Build a large food web. All players collect their own points. Whoever lays the most food arrows wins.
Game Material
- 24 "Waldrand" cards (cards 1-24)
- 24 "Savanne" cards (cards 26-49)
- 1 "Sonne" (sun) card (card 25)
- 45 "Arrow" game pieces
- 20 silver and 10 gold markers
- 3 special cards (cards 50-52)
Setup
- Choose a card set: "Waldrand" or "Savanne". Shuffle the 24 cards and place them ready as a draw pile.
- For a more demanding game you can additionally shuffle in the matching special cards.
- Make space on the table for a 5x5 grid of 25 cards: five rows of five cards each. Place the card 25 "Sonne" in the middle. Keep the arrow game pieces and point markers ready within everyone's reach.
- Everyone draws 3 cards and takes them into their hand.
- If you play with two players, each person draws four cards. If you play alone, you draw five cards. The number of hand cards stays the same during the whole game.
- Whoever has the highest card number begins. Producers have the highest numbers and can always be connected to the sun. If not, observe "If No Card Fits".
How You Play
1. Lay a card. Lay one of your hand cards into the grid. It must form at least one matching food relationship with at least one adjacent card.
- Important! The other adjacent cards do not have to match your card.
- You can place your card above, below, left, right or diagonally.
2. Mark connections and take points. The picture circles on each card show what the species eats and by whom it is eaten. Two cards match when one of the two species eats the other. Check all adjacent cards. For each matching connection, place an arrow game piece between the two cards. The arrow always points from the prey to the predator.
Take one point (silver marker) for each connection. Five silver markers can be exchanged for a gold marker at any time.
3. Draw a card. If the draw pile still contains cards, draw a new card. After that you again have as many hand cards as at the start of the game.
If No Card Fits
If none of your cards fits, put as many of your hand cards as you like under the draw pile and draw exactly as many new ones. Your turn ends.
End of the Game and Scoring
The game ends when all 25 spaces of the 5x5 grid are occupied and each card has at least one matching connection. It also ends when the draw pile is empty and nobody can lay a matching card any more.
Whoever has the most points at the end wins. In case of a tie, whoever has laid the most cards with multiple connections wins.
