Components

The cards for Baronda are of 4 suits numbered 1-13 (plus the 0 Garuda), red is always the trump suit.

There are 3 types of special cards.

  • (3) Pass: the weakest card which always loses. Can ignore must-follow rules
  • (3) Naga: which is stronger than the trump card. Can ignore must-follow rules
  • (4) Garuda the "Naga" killer. These are the 0 of each suit. Must-follow

Garuda is…

  • Strongest when either Naga is played or everyone plays the lead suit (follows or passes). Garuda wins the trick.
  • Weakest when Naga is not played and someone fails to follow the lead suit. Garuda loses the trick.

Also included are:

  • (1) Round type tracker Barong: 13 up / Rangda: 11 down
  • (5) Two-card sets used for recording each player's bid. Offering and pedestal
  • (5) Player aids

4 players0 – 10
3 players0 – 7
2 players0 – 5

Bidding

At the start of a round, each player is dealt 12 cards (with remainder cards set aside) which players review and then simultaneously bid a number based on how many tricks they think they will win, with the sum of all bids determining the objective for the round. Give the Leader card to the start player. This will rotate each round.

  • If the sum of all bids total 13 or more, players will try to win as many tricks as possible.
  • If the sum of all bids total 11 or fewer, players will try to win as few tricks as possible.
  • If the sum of all bids totals exactly 12, the leader must increase or decrease their bid by 1 to determine the round's objective.

Play

Play follows normal must-follow conventions. If Pass or Naga are led the first suit played determines lead suit. If the same value (Naga/Pass) is played, the first card is strongest.

Scoring

Round scores are determined by comparing the number of tricks won against the number bid.

BARONG: If the objective is 'more' and the player…

  • wins more tricks than bid, then the player earns 2 points plus the number of tricks over the bid.
  • Wins exactly the number bid then the player earns 2 points
  • wins fewer tricks than bid, then the player loses points equal to the number of tricks under the bid.

RANGDA: If the objective is 'fewer' and the player…

  • wins fewer tricks than bid, then the player earns 2 points plus the number of tricks under the bid.
  • Wins exactly the number bid then the player earns 2 points
  • wins more tricks than bid, then the player loses points equal to the number of tricks over the bid.

For example, if your bid is "4", and the bid total is "10", and the number of tricks won is "3", then 4 bid – 3 won = 1 point plus a bonus of 2 points for meeting the objective, for a total of 3 points. On the other hand, if 5 tricks were won then 4 bid – 5 won = -1 point.

2-Player Rules

Bid per basic rules and play up to 12 tricks per round. A round ends once a winner is determinable. There is no scoring tracking between rounds, just a determination of the round winner. Lead alternates between rounds until one player wins two rounds.

When playing Barong, the player that wins the number of tricks bid wins the round. If neither do, the round ends in a draw.

When playing Rangda, the player who wins more tricks than bid loses the round.
