How to Read a Scenario

Each scenario lists, in order: the historical introduction, Victory conditions, which side sets up first and which side moves first, the number of turns, any Special Rules, and each side's set up instructions and Order of Battle (forces), including their Operations Range, Command Points, and (where printed) Rout Edge for that scenario. "xN" denotes the quantity of that counter included in the scenario's forces.

How to Read a Unit Counter

Infantry counters (Squads, Weapon Teams/WT, Decoys) print, top to bottom: an optional SATW (Special Anti-Tank Weapon) number next to a panzerfaust/PIAT-style icon in the upper left (Weapon Teams print "WT" in this position instead); Morale (large number, upper right); Proficient Firepower (mid right); Melee Firepower (lower right, on the star/corner); and, in the bottom band, Firepower (as a fraction, e.g. "6/5"), Range (single number), and Casualty rating (as a fraction, e.g. "4/7"). These are transcribed below as:

Name — SATW S (if printed); Morale M, Prof FP P, Melee FP L; FP F, Range R, Casualty C

Vehicle counters print, per the Series Rules (§ counter key): Movement Points (large number, upper right); Gun Firepower vs. Vehicle/Infantry (upper left, first line); Front Armor/Side & Rear Armor (upper left, second line); and Proficiency Rating (small number, lower right), alongside the vehicle's name. These are transcribed below as:

Name — MP M, FP V/I, Armor F/S, Prof P

Gun counters (towed/emplaced guns) print Firepower vs. Vehicle/Infantry (upper left, red), Morale (upper right), Proficiency (mid right, yellow), and Casualty (lower right corner, red), plus the gun's caliber/type label; the bottom band additionally prints a Range value and a secondary rating inside a star icon. These are transcribed below as:

Name — FP V/I, Morale M, Prof P, Casualty C; Range R, Rating (star) X

Training Scenarios

Infantry Training Scenario – Take a Building

Version 2.2

Set up first: German. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–4.

This training scenario is meant to introduce new players to the system or to be used as a quick filler game, while not meant to represent any specific battle. The general situation involves a small German force attempting to hold part of a town against a larger Russian force in July 1943. Only Squads and MG Weapon Teams are used.

Training Scenario Strategy Tips: For the Russians, the battle is really fought in two separate sections on either side of the building. Strive to get some units Fully Suppressed so that their Suppression will carry over to the next turn. You can't really rush without getting units Suppressed. Remember that units can Final Op Fire an unlimited number of times when firing adjacent. If units are not Suppressed, they will devastate a rush. Still, you do not have enough firepower to get all Germans Fully Suppressed so you will have to make a call on when and where you will rush, accepting casualties in the process. The Russian really needs to get a foothold across the street in turn 3, although he can win if he doesn't. For the Germans, time is your friend. It is better for your troops (especially in the Victory building) to maintain concealment as long as possible in order to gain the beneficial modifier. Mark units Op Fire, to save them for shooting at Russians trying to cross the street. During set up, do not put more than one unit in a hex. Save your command point for Final Op Firing at a unit moving in the open (or for melee). Avoid putting the MG in the building as close combat will happen there. If the Russian gets across the street, be prepared to collapse more troops into the building. If the Russians are in the building on Turn 4, it might be a good idea to spend your Command Point to have a unit fire point blank at them before the Russian can go.

Special Rules: The East-West road that runs from A5 to D3 to D6 to E7 to I5 divides the map for set up purposes.

Victory: The Russian player wins if there are no German units in the E6/F5 Building at game end.

Russian set up: All units must set up south of the East-West road. At least 4 units must set up in Rows B and C. Operations Range: 3–4. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: South.

  • x5 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/7
  • x5 Squad (LMG) — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 5/2, Range 5, Casualty 3/7
  • x1 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 7/5₂, Range 12, Casualty 4/7

German set up: All units must set up north of the East-West road. At least one non-decoy unit must be in either B3, C3, or D2. Operations Range: 1–4. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: North.

  • x4 Squad — SATW 2; Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 1; FP 6/5, Range 6, Casualty 4/7
  • x1 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 8/7₂, Range 14, Casualty 4/7
  • x2 Decoy/Conceal — SATW 2; Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 1; FP 6/5, Range 6, Casualty 4/7

Panzer Training Scenario – Meeting Engagement

Set up first: German. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–4.

This training scenario is meant to introduce new players to tanks in this game or to be used as a quick filler game. While not meant to represent any specific battle. The general situation involves a small meeting engagement of German and Russian mobile forces in July 1943. Only Tanks are used.

Training Scenario Strategy Tips: This scenario can be a very swirling and chaotic affair. For the Germans, especially, you will learn the importance of the Move marker to make it harder on the Russian tankers. It is sometimes wise to pass up a shot and move your tank before firing in order to retain the Move marker. The more static the front is, the easier it will be for the Russians.

Next Steps: The rest of the scenarios are historical in nature and are in chronological order. For those who are still learning the system we recommend playing Scenario 25 next as it involves a small mixed infantry/tank force. It is a good way to cement some of the game's principles before playing the scenarios in order.

Special Rules: There are no roads in this scenario. Every hex costs 1 movement point.

Victory: The player that destroys the most Vehicles by game end is the winner. The Russian player wins in the event of a tie.

German set up: At start, set up in any whole hex of Board 11. Operations Range: 3–9. Command Points: 0.

  • x2 PzIIIJ — MP 12, FP 10/9, Armor 4/2, Prof 9
  • Turn 2, enter at West edge: x4 PzIVF2 — MP 13, FP 13/10, Armor 4/3, Prof 8

Russian set up: Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 0.

  • Turn 1, enter at East edge: x4 T34M41 — MP 16, FP 9/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5
  • Turn 2, enter at East edge: x2 T34M43 — MP 15, FP 9/9, Armor 8/4, Prof 6; x1 T70 — MP 13, FP 7/7, Armor 4/3, Prof 5

Scenario 19 – The First T34s

Set up first: German. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–7.

Southwest of Radekhov, June 23rd, 1941—On the eve of Operation Barbarossa, the soldiers of the 11th Panzer were itching for a fight. They were superbly led, well trained, experienced, and had tasted only victory. As they trained near the Soviet border, few believed the official version - that they were being prepared for an invasion of the British Isles. That didn't make sense given their location. Some thought their Russian allies were going to allow them to pass through and attack India, a colony of the British empire. Others thought they might attack through Turkey towards the Middle East and an eventual link up with Rommel. That night General Cruwell told them, "The Fuhrer calls to war against Bolshevism, the supreme enemy of our National-Socialist realm…Our slogan remains - Attack! Our goal - the Dneiper. We want to be the first again, as before in Belgrade."

On June 22nd, following the breakthrough made by the infantry divisions, the 11th Panzer raced on, meeting only nuisance resistance. Passing by the flank of the 124th Rifle Division, they pinned it in place to be cleaned up by the following infantry. As they headed toward Radekhov on the 23rd, a divisional aerial reconnaissance plane revealed a Russian armored concentration and the 15th Panzer Regiment was turned toward the south to meet it. It was the 10th Tank Division.

The 11th had encountered a couple of T34s early that day, but this was their first real combat with them. It was the first major tank battle of the Ukraine and some sources say this was the first action involving T34s during on the whole Russian Front. While the Germans held their fire until their targets were within 400 yards, the Russians unimaginatively sent their tanks in wave after wave. The Germans were in a good position with their tanks in a line supported by 88s. The Russians lost 46 tanks in the battle. While it is unknown how many German tanks were knocked out, only 1 would be permanently lost - the rest would be recovered. Less than 48 hours since the invasion began, the 11th Panzer had already travelled 40 miles, conquered Radekhov, and won the first major tank battle.

Note: The first couple of turns are rough for the Russians. If they can get up close, however, things can change quickly. They only need to kill 3.

Victory: The Russian player wins by destroying 3 German tanks/guns.

Special Rules: Ignore all roads (there are no roads in this scenario). Russian tanks only get 1/2 of their Movement Points the turn they enter. They must also move into a full hex of boards 21 or 13 as quickly as they can. Obviously, the T34s and T26s will not make it there until the second turn that they are on the board. They may not go back onto boards 15 or 11 until turn 5.

Force Exchanges: None.

Russian set up: Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 0.

  • Turn 1, enter at South edge: x1 T34M40 — MP 16, FP 8/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5; x4 T26S — MP 10, FP 7/8, Armor 2/1, Prof 5
  • Turn 2, enter at South edge: x1 T34M40 — MP 16, FP 8/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5; x4 BT7 — MP 20, FP 7/8, Armor 1/1, Prof 5
  • Turn 3, enter at South edge: x1 T34M40 — MP 16, FP 8/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5; x4 BT7 — MP 20, FP 7/8, Armor 1/1, Prof 5

German set up: Set up on boards 12 and 14 in rows E through H. They must be at least 3 hexes away from the east or west board edge and have at least 1 empty hex between units. Operations Range: 3–9. Command Points: 1.

  • x2 88mm Gun — FP 15/10, Morale 10, Prof 6, Casualty 2; Range 5/2, Rating (star) 9
  • x1 PzIIF — MP 14, FP 4/7, Armor 2/1, Prof 9
  • x1 PzIIIF — MP 13, FP 6/9, Armor 2/2, Prof 9
  • x3 PzIIIG — MP 12, FP 8/9, Armor 3/2, Prof 9

Scenario 20 – The Bloody Triangle

Set up first: Russian. Move first: German. Turns: 1–9.

Dubno, June 25th, 1941—Although unknown to them at the time, the 11th Panzer Division had become the point of the spear in the largest tank battle in history (to that point). In some ways, it was the "first Kursk". This week long battle, referred to by some as the Bloody Triangle, would involve about 700 German tanks and armored cars versus over 5000 Soviet - more than 700 of which were T34s and KVs (almost half of what had been produced). Dubno became an important part of that battle and was attacked, almost by accident, in a pincer move - the 231st Recon Battalion and the 110th Panzer Grenadier Regiment coming from the north and south.

Despite an attempt to reinforce Dubno with tanks it was to be in vain. The Germans were to clear all of Dubno by shortly after noon. The lead elements of the 11th Panzer were already moving deeper into Soviet territory.

Victory: The German player wins if at any time there are no Russian Squads, WTs, or Guns (vehicles do not prevent a German win) on whole hexes of Board 18.

Special Rules: The German Artillery may place smoke. Units may mount a Halftrack during the scenario.

Force Exchanges: The Russians may exchange 3 Squads from their at start forces for two Decoys and one 45mm.

Russian set up: At start, set up anywhere on Board 18. May also use rows A, B, & C of Board 12. Operations Range: 3–5. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: West or East, whichever is closest.

  • x1 45mm Gun — FP 7/6, Morale 10, Prof 6, Casualty 2; Range 6/3, Type 45mm, Rating (star) 8
  • x5 Decoy/Conceal — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x3 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 7/5₂, Range 12, Casualty 4/7
  • x11 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x4 Foxholes — −2/−4
  • Turn 4, enter East edge: x1 T34M40 — MP 16, FP 8/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5; x2 T26S — MP 10, FP 7/8, Armor 2/1, Prof 5; x5 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6

German set up: Operations Range: 3–9. Command Points: 2. Rout Edge: North or South, whichever is closest.

  • Turn 1, enter South edge of board: x1 PzIVE — MP 13, FP 7/10, Armor 4/2, Prof 8; x1 37mm Gun — FP 6/5, Morale 10, Prof 6, Casualty 2; Range 6/3, Type 37mm, Rating (star) 9; x1 88mm Gun — FP 15/10, Morale 10, Prof 6, Casualty 2; Range 5/2, Type 88mm, Rating (star) 9; x2 SPW 251/1 — MP 14, Capacity 1/1; x5 Squad — SATW 2; Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 1; FP 6/5, Range 6, Casualty 4/7; x1 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 8/7₂, Range 14, Casualty 4/7; x1 100mm Artillery Support — FP 1/9, Accuracy 7, Prof 8

Scenario 21 – Take Dubno...or be Shot!

Set up first: German. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–10.

Dubno, June 27th, 1941—While the bulk of the 11th Panzer Division was racing onward to Ostrog, Brigade Commissar N.K. Popel, commander of the 8th Mechanized Corp, was told, "If you take Dubno by evening, you'll get a medal. If you don't, you'll be expelled from the Party and shot." His attack fell on light forces of the 11th Panzer as well as rear area units.

Although all attacks on Dubno would be repulsed, the attacks against the flanks of the hard charging 11th Panzer did succeed in making it more and more difficult to resupply the lead elements of the division - forcing the Germans to drop supplies by air. Popel, for his part, is emphatic in his memoirs that he took Dubno. While he did take an outlying village three miles away, Dubno was still firmly in German hands. He didn't get shot so perhaps that was close enough. In any case, this was still the most successful action against the Germans to this point. Unfortunately, the Soviet command structure was very disjointed. No attempts were made to reinforce the action and Popel went over to the defensive, giving the initiative back to the 11th - although Dubno would not be completely secure until the 29th.

Victory: The Russian player wins by having 5 Squads or WTs on whole hexes of Board 18 at the end of any turn.

Special Rules: None.

Force Exchanges: The Germans may exchange 2 of their Turn 4 PG Squads for 1 MG WT. The Russians may exchange the two BT7s that arrive on Turn 3 for 1 T34M40.

Russian set up: At start on Board 19. Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 2. Rout Edge: East.

  • x1 T34M40 — MP 16, FP 8/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5
  • x2 BT7 — MP 20, FP 7/8, Armor 1/1, Prof 5
  • x14 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x2 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 7/5₂, Range 12, Casualty 4/7
  • Turn 3, enter East edge: x6 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6; x2 BT7 — MP 20, FP 7/8, Armor 1/1, Prof 5

Scenario 22 – Our Goose is Cooked!

Set up first: German. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–8.

North of Uman, July 21st, 1941—After another month of hard fighting, the 11th Panzer Division was heading towards Uman in an attempt to help encircle a couple of Soviet armies. 5th Company of the 15th Panzer Regiment had, on the 20th, intercepted and destroyed a Russian train loaded with T34s. Supported by a couple of 88s, they stopped and continued to guard the rail line. The next day, the area was judged to be quiet and, ominously, the 88s were withdrawn because they were needed elsewhere. Meanwhile, Gustav Schrodek of Panzer #21 was looking forward to dinner. They had managed to kill a goose and were looking forward to having this rare treat. In an unfortunate irony, Russians started pouring out of the woods just as their goose finished cooking.

The Russians came with infantry and T34s. As Schrodek relates, shot after shot left his gun, but they kept bouncing off the thick armor of the T34s. He "wanted to pull out his hair" in frustration. It seemed as if his goose was, indeed, cooked. German tanks were forced to shift their fire against the Russian infantry. Just as all looked lost, a battery of artillery arrived and managed to stabilize the situation, barely. Although 4 German tanks would be destroyed and Schrodek's #21 would end up burning that day, he did manage to survive and escape to safety.

Victory: The Russian wins if there are no German units on both Boards 14 and 15 at the end of any turn. The Russian also wins if he can exit 4 squads off the east edge of the board by the end of the game.

Special Rules: Ignore all roads (there are no roads in this scenario).

Force Exchanges: Remove a PzIIIG and a PzIIIF to have the German reinforcements begin the game at start.

Russian set up: Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 0. Rout Edge: West.

  • At start on Boards 23 and/or 24: x10 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • Turn 1, enter the West edge of the map: x3 T34M40 — MP 16, FP 8/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5; x1 T34M41 — MP 16, FP 9/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5
  • Turn 2, enter the West edge of the map: x3 T34M40 — MP 16, FP 8/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5; x1 T34M41 — MP 16, FP 9/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5

German set up: Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 1.

  • At start: Boards 14 and/or 15, with at least 3 units on each board and at least one empty hex between units. Units may not set up in Woods or Buildings. x4 PzIIIG — MP 12, FP 8/9, Armor 3/2, Prof 9; x3 PzIIIF — MP 13, FP 6/9, Armor 2/2, Prof 9
  • Turn 1, East edge: x3 105mm Gun — FP 15/10, Morale 10, Prof 6, Casualty 2; Range 5/2, Type 105mm, Rating (star) 7; x3 SPW 251/1 — MP 14, Capacity 1/1

Scenario 23 – Hill 251

Set up first: Russian. Move first: German. Turns: 1–8.

Hill 251, overlooking Uman, July 21st, 1941—Although winning battle after battle, the war was beginning to take a toll on the 11th. As they took more casualties and spread out over more territory, they were being stretched thin. They were able to only push a small kampfgruppe toward Uman. Kampfgruppe Bohlmann consisted of a battalion from the 111th Panzer Grenadier Regiment, a Flak Company, a Pioneer Company, a Panzer Jaeger Company, and some artillery assets. They attacked Hill 251, North of Uman in preparation for taking the city.

The battle went back and forth. The Russians fought determinedly, the Germans took the hill and reinforced it, and the Russians counterattacked. Over the next few days, the Germans would continue to hold the hill, although it was dicey. Their new 50mm PaK38s were hidden on the hill and used at close range as T34s attacked the heights. The Germans would later attempt to take Uman, however the Russian defense and a timely counterattack would force them to call it off. About a week after taking Hill 251, the Germans realized that they did not really need Uman, abandoned the hill, and instead pushed deeper into the Ukraine, toward Kirovograd. The encirclement was completed by the beginning of August and within a week, the Germans had captured both the 6th and 12th Armies. It was a haul that encompassed the remnants of 20 divisions and over 100,000 prisoners, including both army commanders and 4 corps commanders.

Next the 1st Panzer Group (which contained the 11th) would turn north toward Kiev and assist the 2nd Panzer Group in the surrounding of that city. This would lead to an even bigger encirclement that would bag over another 400,000 troops. For the 11th Panzer's part, by this point, it was down to about 40% of its original strength. While winning, it was grinding down as it kept facing new and fresh Soviet Divisions. It would be withdrawn from the line for a couple of weeks to be refitted.

Victory: There are five level 2 hexes defined by the hill that includes hex E3 on Map 19. The side that controls more of them at the end of turn 8, wins.

Special Rules: The German Artillery may place smoke.

Force Exchanges: The Russians may exchange 2 At Start Squads for 1 MG WT and 1 Decoy.

Russian set up: At start on Board 19; at least 3 of the level 2 hexes must have Foxholes in them. Operations Range: 3–5. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: South.

  • x6 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x1 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 7/5₂, Range 12, Casualty 4/7
  • x1 45mm Gun — FP 7/6, Morale 10, Prof 6, Casualty 2; Range 6/3, Type 45mm, Rating (star) 8
  • x3 Decoy/Conceal — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x12 Foxholes — −2/−4

Scenario 24 – Vyazma Pocket

Set up first: German. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–10.

South of Vyazma, October 9th, 1941—The 11th was transferred north to be part of Operation Typhoon, the planned drive on Moscow. The first part of the operation was yet another pincer move - this one would end west of the Russian capital. The division attacked across the Desna River, drove east, and then swung north as part of the encirclement. Russian resistance was broken easily and within a week, the 11th had made it as far north as Vyazma and had closed the pocket. In the bag were four Soviet armies. The 11th was assigned to help guard the eastern side of the pocket.

The Germans had hoped for a quick surrender as had happened at times earlier in the war. Instead, the Russians attempted to break out - it was well known by now that prisoners were not always well cared for. A full throated "Urrah" went up and a desperate attack fell on the 110th Panzer Grenadier Regiment. The attack suffered tremendous casualties but made progress until the 110th was reinforced by elements of the 15th Panzer Regiment.

Although some Russians would escape, the integrity of the "kessel" would hold. Another 500,000 prisoners would be taken. While units were tied up cleaning up the pocket, snow fell, and then quickly melted. "General Mud" had arrived to save the day. By the middle of October, the road network was an impassible quagmire. It would provide the respite the Russians so desperately needed. Divisions would arrive from the east and a defense of Moscow would be made.

Victory: The Russian wins by exiting a total of 6 units off the East edge of the map.

Special Rules: None.

Force Exchanges: The Germans may replace 1 Squad, and the 37mm AT gun with 2 Decoys in order to get an extra Command Point each turn. This need not be revealed until the first time that 3 Command Points are used in a turn.

Scenario 25 – Twelve Miles from Moscow

Set up first: Russian. Move first: German. Turns: 1–10.

Alabuschevo, November 29th, 1941—By the middle of November, the ground had frozen enough to allow movement. The Germans once again decided on a pincer move. The goal was to link up at the city of Noginsk, east of the capital. Kampfgruppe Fricke, including the 15th Panzer Regiment, attacked through the woods and took the village of Alabuschevo. Perhaps the most famous picture ever taken of the 11th Panzer shows them on the outskirts of this village.

They had made it to about 12 miles northwest of Moscow, some said that advanced units could see buildings of the city through binoculars, but they could go no further. Unfortunately for the Germans, the freezing ground that allowed movement also meant freezing temperatures. Still without winter clothing, they were headed into a winter that would set meteorological records for cold - temperatures as low as twenty to fifty degrees below zero. The Germans had over 130,000 cases of frostbite, engine blocks were cracking because of the cold, and fires had to be lit under vehicles to thaw their engines enough to use them. Worn down by casualties, struggling against the elements, they were like a punch drunk boxer, barely able to stay on his feet.

On December 5th, Guderian would stop the attack. He felt the existing lines could not be held and he wanted to withdraw. Hitler would have none of that and would sack Guderian before Christmas. He also dismissed his commander-in-chief, Walther von Brauchitsch, and on 19 December 1941 took personal charge of the Wehrmacht. In an indirect way, the failure to take Moscow widened and deepened the rift and the mistrust between Hitler and his generals - which spelled doom for the Germans in the East.

Victory: The Germans win if they control all three stone building hexes on Board 20 at game end.

Special Rules: Russian units may not leave the board that they start on until they have either fired upon a German unit or have been fired upon by a German unit. Half hexes on the North and South edges of the board are NOT in play.

Force Exchanges: The Russians may exchange 3 Squads for 1 45mm and 2 Decoys.

Russian set up: Set up on any board. Units on Board 23 must be set up east of Row D. At least 3 non-Decoy units must be set up on whole hexes of each board. Operations Range: 3–5. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: East.

  • x15 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x2 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 7/5₂, Range 12, Casualty 4/7

Scenario 26 – The Last Blitzkrieg

Set up first: Russian. Move first: German. Turns: 1–8.

Near Volovo, July 1st, 1942—Case Blue was the code name for the German offensive in Russian for 1942. It was a two part plan. The first half of which was an attack eastward toward Voronezh, which would then enable the Germans to drive southward toward Stalingrad and the oil fields of the Caucusus. In addition, taking Voronezh would sever key railroad links to the south and make it more difficult to redeploy troops to the south. The Russians, expecting another drive toward Moscow, were taken off guard and the attack made great progress. The 11th Panzer Division was on the northern flank of this attack. On June 28th they attacked across the Tim River and shattered the 15th Rifle Division. After weathering some counterattacks, they began another period of rapid advances - quickly seizing ground on the attack.

Although the German army would have their share of successes all the way until the end of the war, Case Blue was their last successful, large scale, offensive blitzkrieg.

Victory: The Germans win if they eliminate all Russian units AND exit 8 units off the East edge of the board. Halftracks do not count as a unit. However, Squads and WTs only count as a unit if they are mounted on a halftrack.

Special Rules: Units may mount a Halftrack during the scenario.

Force Exchanges: The Russians may exchange an ATR and a MG WT for a 45mm AT Gun and a Decoy.

Russian set up: Set up on any board at least 4 hexes away from the West edge of the map. Operations Range: 3–4. Command Points: 2. Rout Edge: East.

  • x10 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x2 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 7/5₂, Range 12, Casualty 4/7
  • x3 ATR — SATW 1; Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 3/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/7
  • x1 45mm Gun — FP 7/6, Morale 10, Prof 6, Casualty 2; Range 6/3, Type 45mm, Rating (star) 8
  • x4 Decoy/Conceal — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6
  • x6 Foxholes — −2/−4

German set up: At start: none. Operations Range: 2–6. Command Points: 2. Rout Edge: West.

  • Turn 1, West edge: x8 Squad — SATW 2; Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 1; FP 6/5, Range 6, Casualty 4/7; x1 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 8/7₂, Range 14, Casualty 4/7; x9 SPW 251/1 — MP 14, Capacity 1/1; x3 PzIIIJ — MP 12, FP 10/9, Armor 4/2, Prof 9

Scenario 27 – Stick to Them Like Glue

Set up first: None. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–8.

Near Krasnaia Poliana, July 6th, 1942—As the Germans were advancing, the Russians quickly started shifting reinforcements from other areas of the front. Their counterstroke to the German offensive began on July 6th, with both the 67th and 87th Tank Brigades (about 120 tanks) hitting the northern flank of the penetration. They struck a kampfgruppe from the 11th Panzer Division near the village of Krasnaia Poliana (55 kilometers northwest of Voronezh). The Ghost Division troops were driven to the south and the Russian commander instructed his units to "cling" to the retreating Germans to make it harder for Stukas to attack them.

The Germans reinforced the retreating kampfgruppe and brought the attack to a halt that day. However, more reinforcements would take the field for the Soviets and attacks would continue over the next several days. The 9th and 11th Panzer Divisions would bear the brunt of attacks of 3 Russian Tank Corps. The attacks would effectively tie up and wear down both German divisions.

Despite that, Case Blue was off to a good start. Three Panzer Korps had moved 200 kilometers into the enemy rear, encircled a couple of armies, demolished four Tank Corps and severely damaged three more. The Germans did all of this against an enemy that outnumbered them 2 to 1 in tanks. As the Sixth Army raced south, the 11th Panzer would remain behind and fight a series of defensive battles near Voronezh and the area of the upper Don.

Victory: The Russians win if they have more tanks than the Germans do in hill hexes on Board 16 at game end.

Special Rules: Since no Russian troops enter the first turn, the Germans get to move all of their units on the board unopposed. Starting with the second turn, the turns will progress normally. Germans may not hold any of their first turn reinforcements off board.

Force Exchanges: None.

Russian set up: At start: none. Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: North.

  • Turn 2, North edge: x10 Squad — Morale 10, Prof FP 5, Melee FP 1; FP 4/1, Range 4, Casualty 3/6; x1 WT — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 2; FP 7/5₂, Range 12, Casualty 4/7; x5 Squad (SMG) — Morale 10, Prof FP 6, Melee FP 1; FP 6/4, Range 2, Casualty 4/7; x6 T34M41 — MP 16, FP 9/9, Armor 7/4, Prof 5
  • Turn 3, North edge: x4 KVIM41 — MP 10, FP 9/9, Armor 8/7, Prof 6

German set up: At start: none. Operations Range: 2–6. Command Points: 3. Rout Edge: South.

Scenario 28 – Like a Good Neighbor...

Set up first: Russian. Move first: German. Turns: 1–9.

State Farm 79, December 8th, 1942—Although the second half of Case Blue had gone well and immense territorial gains had been made, the offensive came to a halt in the meat grinder of Stalingrad. The Russian counteroffensive cut off the city and the 11th Panzer, which had been in OKH reserve since October, was sent south to be part of the relief effort. However the Russians were wise and continued offensives in other areas. The Russian 1st Tank Corps attacked across the Chir River to the Northeast of the encirclement of Stalingrad.

The Germans had to respond to this threat and diverted the 11th Panzer. They moved north from Rostov to meet the Russians at Sowchos 79 (State Farm 79). The 110th PG Regiment with elements of the 336th Infantry Division and the 11th Panzer's 88s took up positions to the south, while the 15th Panzer Regiment, supported by the 111th PG Regiment, flanked the Russian penetration and attacked from the North. This move, over unknown ground and coming after a 2 day force march, yielded its reward. The 1st Tank Corp was taken completely by surprise. The 15th first ambushed and destroyed a column of trucks carrying infantry on its way to reinforce the position at the State Farm. They ran parallel to the convoy and destroyed the trucks at ranges of around 20 yards, using their machine guns in order to conserve the ammunition for their main guns. They then continued down the road and attacked the State Farm from the rear, just as the Russians were attacking southward. By nightfall the Russian force had been wiped out and 53 Russian tanks were destroyed. See the Battle Manual for more information on this battle.

* NOTE: This Scenario also requires Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles to play.

Victory: The Germans win if there are no Russian Squads or WTs in buildings on Board 20 at game end.

Scenario 29 – The Back of My Hand....

Set up first: German. Move first: German. Turns: 1–7.

Barvenkovo, February 28th, 1943—By February 1943, the Germans were in big trouble. The encirclement of the 6th Army at Stalingrad was followed by Soviet offenses in January that shattered the Hungarian 2nd Army and the German 2nd Army. The Germans were left over-extended with gaping holes in their front. At one point there was a 150 mile chasm in their line with only 5 divisions available to screen it. There was a real danger of losing the entire southern flank and having most of the troops in the south being cut off by Russians driving to the Sea of Azov. Then came one of General Manstein's greatest accomplishments…but it did not occur on the battlefield. In long and intense, face to face arguments with Hitler, he convinced the dictator (belatedly) to allow a withdrawal to shorten the line and free up forces for a possible counter attack. Manstein's strategy to withdraw, allow the Soviets to advance, and then counterattack became known as his "Backhand Blow."

The 11th Panzer played a key role in this post Stalingrad period. It held the shoulder of the Russian penetration for the troops in the south. The Russians raced through and pushed forward in attempt to stop the German troops in the south from retreating, but the German troops were no longer running. The 11th was part of the forces that pushed forward from the south while other forces came down from the north. One of their tasks was to take the town of Barvenkovo. Their initial attacks were stalled, but they took the town when they swung mobile forces to attack the town from the north.

The Backhand Blow was almost too easy. The Germans eventually created a continuous front and cut off the Russian 6th Army and a couple of Tank Corps. They followed that up with a pincer move around Kharkov and recaptured that city in March, just as the mud season set in. It would give the Germans 6 weeks to consolidate their gains and reorganize. The next question would be - would they attack after the mud lifted or would they wait?

Victory: The Germans win if they control more stone building hexes than the Russians in rows B and C of Board 18 at game end.

Special Rules: German Artillery may place smoke.

Force Exchanges: The Russians may exchange any 3 Squads for a 76mm and 2 Decoys.

Russian set up: At start, Boards 18 and 20. Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: Any.

Scenario 30 – Start of a Death Ride

Set up first: Russian. Move first: German. Turns: 1–13.

North of Butowo, July 5th, 1943—Manstein argued for an immediate attack once the mud period ended. He wanted to take advantage of the Russians who he felt were still smarting from the Backhand Blow. Hitler, however, preferred to wait for the arrival of the new Panther tank to make any attack more decisive. The goal of the offensive was to be a modest one - pinching off the salient near Kursk. The Russians, however, put the delay to good use and built 7 defensive lines, in depth, on the shoulders of the bulge.

As it became obvious that the Russians were well prepared. Manstein asked Hitler to call off the attack. Hitler even went so far as to say that whenever he thought of the offensive, it turned his stomach. The Battle of Kursk would be the biggest tank battle in history. For the Germans it would be a "Death Ride" because all of their operational reserves were committed to the battle. The offensive was set to start on July 4th - Independence day for American and the beginning of the end for Germany. See the Battle Manual for more information on this battle.

* NOTE: This Scenario also requires Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles to play.

Victory: The Germans win if they control a majority of the second level hexes on Board 19 at game end.

Scenario 31 – Obian Alone

Set up first: German. Move first: Russian. Turns: 1–8.

12 miles South of Obian, July 12th, 1943—The first days following the initial attack of the Kursk offensive would see good progress made by the 11th Panzer. However, gains would come slower and slower as the division began to wear down. Eventually, the Gross Deutschland was turned to the side to defeat large Russian forces on the flank and the 11th was left to drive to Obian on their own. Despite fierce resistance, they eventually gained the hills south of Obian.

On the 12th, with Prokhorovka raging to their southeast, the division would face an attack of massed infantry and tanks. The Russian forces would threaten to push the 111th Panzer Grenadier Regiment out of their wooded position and it would take a counterattack by the 15th Panzer Regiment to restore the situation. It would take until the following day to finally clean up and eliminate all the attacks, but it was too late. The 11th had made the northernmost progress during the offensive, but Citadel was a failure. The Russians had just launched their own offensive on the Western and Bryansk Fronts and the Allies had landed in Sicily. Manstein wanted to continue the Kursk offensive, but Hitler overruled him. Forces would have to be withdrawn to cover the other threats.

Scenario 32 – Korsun Pocket

Set up first: Russian. Move first: German. Turns: 1–8.

Tishkovo, January 26th, 1944—In January 1944, disaster struck again for the German Army in Russia. Six divisions of Army Group South became surrounded after sudden attacks by the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts around the village of Korsun (near the larger town of Cherkassy). The fear of another Stalingrad loomed large in the German mind and was a real possibility. JU 52s delivered supplies into Korsun's airfield and Panzer Divisions attacked from the outside.

The 11th would be part of the relief forces (despite what some sources say, it was not in the pocket). The 15th Panzer Regiment and the 111th Panzer Grenadier Regiment attacked the town of Tishkovo and Hill 205. They took both that day and this action temporarily cut off the Russian spearheads heading west.

Over the next couple of weeks, the actions on the outside of the pocket would not be enough and it became clear that a breakout was needed. Without consulting Hitler, Manstein ordered a breakout on February 16th. Led by the SS Wiking division, the trapped forces surged outward to meet the armored forces that had engaged the outside of the ring. There would be no Stalingrad on the Dneiper.

Victory: The Germans win by controlling all four hexes of the stone buildings that include hexes B3 and C3 on Board 18 AND by controlling the majority of the second level hexes on Board 19 at game end.

Special Rules: German Artillery may place smoke.

Force Exchanges: The Russians may replace 2 ATR Squads and a Submachine Gun Squad (FP 6/4) with 1 76mm and 2 Decoys.

Russian set up: At start: set up in any hex North of the road that runs from Board 22 E1 to Board 16 E9. Operations Range: 3–6. Command Points: 1. Rout Edge: North.
