Game Idea
Each round, one player, called the BAM!-Master, reveals a red BAM! card. All other players now try to fill the gap in this card's text with one of their grey term cards in as witty and original a way as possible. The BAM!-Master then decides which suggestion they like best and which they find forgettable. In turn, every player gets to be the BAM!-Master and pass their stern verdict on the indecently good ideas of the other players.
Components
The game consists of 480 cards:
- 80 red BAM! cards
- 367 grey term cards
- 12 red and 21 grey blank cards
The blank cards let you bring your own ideas into the game and create your very own BAM!
Illustrated example cards in the rulebook include "Nach gutem Sex wünsche ich mir BAM!" ("After good sex I wish for BAM!") and "Schweißfüße" ("Sweaty feet").
Setup
Separate the cards by colour and shuffle the two stacks. Place the red BAM! cards as a face-down stack in the middle of the table. Deal 10 grey term cards to each player. Place the remaining grey term cards as a face-down draw pile next to the red BAM! cards.
The player who talks the most begins the game and is the BAM!-Master in the first round.
Gameplay
The BAM!-Master turns over the top red BAM! card. They then read aloud the text on the card, which contains BAM! once or twice.
Every player except the BAM!-Master now considers which of their grey term cards would best replace BAM! on the red card. For example, if the red card reads "BAM! is the best investment." and a player holds the grey card "Being stingy with tips", they would mentally replace BAM! like this: "Being stingy with tips is the best investment." Each player does this with all of their grey term cards and then chooses 1 of their cards.
As soon as everyone has chosen 1 of their grey term cards, each player places it face down as a stack in the middle of the table.
Red BAM! Cards That Contain BAM! Twice
How do the red BAM! cards that contain the word BAM! twice work?
With these cards, each player chooses 2 of their grey term cards. Place the card that replaces the first BAM! on top of the card that replaces the second BAM!.
IMPORTANT: The BAM!-Master must reveal these pairs from the stack unshuffled.
Judging
The BAM!-Master takes all the grey term cards played and lays them face up in front of themselves. They then read out all the proposed combinations, replacing BAM! with the text of the respective grey term card. It may happen that a grey term card does not fit grammatically into the sentence on the red BAM! card. The BAM!-Master's task is to adjust the sentence or the term so that the resulting sentence makes sense and is grammatically correct.
After the BAM!-Master has read out all the combined sentences, they decide which combination they like best and declare that grey card the winning card. The player who played this winning card receives that grey term card as a victory point. (Likewise, for red BAM! cards that contain BAM! twice: the player with the best combination takes one of their two played grey term cards as a victory point.)
The BAM!-Master then selects the combination that provokes the least enthusiasm in them. The player who played this grey card (or these grey cards) receives the red BAM! card as a minus point.
Collect your victory points and minus points in one stack in front of you.
Place all other grey cards played in this round on a discard pile.
Then everyone except the BAM!-Master draws 1 or 2 grey cards from the draw pile, so that each player again has 10 grey term cards in hand.
A new round can now begin. The BAM!-Master of the new round is the left-hand neighbour of the BAM!-Master of the previous round.
Example
The rulebook's example combines the red card text "Deutschland sucht BAM!!" ("Germany is looking for BAM!!") with the grey card "Ambitionierter Kotnascher" ("Ambitious Kotnascher"). It can be read aloud as "Deutschland sucht ambitionierte Kotnascher" ("Germany is looking for ambitious Kotnascher") or as "Deutschland sucht ambitionierten Kotnascher" ("Germany is looking for an ambitious Kotnascher"). The BAM!-Master chooses which reading to use, as described above.
What to Do When the Grey Card Stack Is Empty?
If you play so long that the grey term cards run out, simply shuffle the discard pile of grey term cards and use the cards as a new face-down draw pile.
End of the Game
Once every player has been BAM!-Master 1, 2, 3 or as many times as you like, the game ends. Now add up your victory points and subtract your minus points to calculate your total score. In case of a tie, the player who won more grey cards wins. If that is also tied, the players share the coveted and incomparable title "The True BAM!-Master".
