Components

Colour dice game for 2 to 4 children, ages 4 to 8.

  • 1 game board (the tree)
  • 4 wooden birds in 4 colours (the Piepmatz playing pieces)
  • 1 colour die

Object of the Game

The little Piepmatz make their first flight attempts. Bravely they leave their nest and at first flutter around in the tree. The player whose Piepmatz is the first to leave the safe surroundings of the tree and fly out into the wide world wins.

Setup

Each child chooses one Piepmatz as their playing piece. All Piepmatz are placed on the nest in the middle of the tree.

Playing the Game

Play proceeds clockwise. The youngest player begins by rolling the colour die. The rolled colour shows the direction in which that player's Piepmatz must fly.

Then the next player takes their turn.

Example: The first player rolls red. Their Piepmatz starts from the nest and flies along the red path to the adjoining yellow field. The next time they are due to play and roll blue, they take their Piepmatz and fly along the blue path to the next field, and so on.

Several Piepmatz may stand on the same field. No Piepmatz is sent back.

Flight into the Wide World

The Piepmatz keep flying criss-cross around the tree until they can fly out of it.

As soon as a Piepmatz has reached a field at the edge of the tree, it is time to "Daumen drücken" (keep your thumbs crossed).

  • If the path in the rolled colour leads out of the tree from that field, the Piepmatz has become fledged (flügge).
  • If, however, the path in the rolled colour leads to an adjoining field within the tree, play must continue until a path leads out of the tree.

End of the Game

The player whose Piepmatz is the first to fly out of the tree wins the game.
